When Rory Staunton scraped his arm during gym class, his parents thought it was a routine cut. Days later, the middle school student was dead due to a bacterial infection. Read about the tragic story.

Rory Staunton, an ambitious 12-year-old, cut his arm during a basketball game in PE class. Later that evening, he experienced strange symptoms that left him vomiting with a severe pain in his leg. Although his parents sought medical help immediately and took all the right steps, Rory suffered from a bacterial infection and tragically died. His parents went on the Today show to speak out about their loss.

Rory, a well-rounded middle school student, is lovingly remembered by his family. The boy was a member of his school’s debate team, and very close with his little sister.

But Rory’s life was cut tragically short when a small scrape he received playing basketball became infected, killing him of Toxic Shock Syndrome. What started as a minor injury quickly escalated into an infected wound.

Apparently, as soon as the night after Rory was injured, he experienced debilitating pain.

“A little after midnight I heard him in the bathroom throwing up,” his mom, Orlaith Staunton, said on Today. “So I went in. He was screaming with a pain in his leg. He said, ‘It’s my leg, mom. It’s my leg.’”

Rory’s pain escalated as his parents took him to the pediatrician. His sickness was initially diagnosed as a stomach virus, but further blood work revealed that his white blood count was exceptionally high, but the Staunton family says that they were never informed of this.

Eventually, the hospitals informed the Stauntons that their son was suffering from sepsis, which causes bodily inflammation and a serious infection. Hospitals administered various treatments to try to fight off the infection, but by April 1, Rory’s condition was rendered deadly. He died later that day in the ER.

The Stauntons have started a website in memorial of their beloved son, and they want to spread information about deadly infections like Rory’s, so that other parents don’t have to deal with the loss of a child.

What a tragedy. We at HollyBaby are wishing the best for the Staunton family, and our hearts are with them after the death of their son.

Mother-of-four Heidi Klum has her hands full keeping up with all those kids and their unique quirks. Now research reveals that birth order does indeed play a role in determining a child’s personality.

Do you have one kid who’s an overachieving class president and another who’d rather spend the day solo playing Wii or reading a book? Rest assured that the hospital didn’t switch your babies at birth. Many experts agree that a child’s place in the family directly affects his or her personality and even future success, according to Today Moms (click here to see the video). “For siblings, the differences in many aspects of personality are about as great as they would be between a bother and a sister,” says Frank Sulloway, Ph.D., author of Born to Rebel: Birth Order, Family Dynamics, and Creative Lives.

According to the research, the first-born child in the family tends to be an overachiever. A study conducted by Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, revealed that the oldest children get about 3,000 more hours of bonding time with parents than their younger siblings. Lucky for 37-year-old Heidi Klum’s daughter Leni, 6, the oldest child also usually grows up to earn a yearly salary of $100,000 or more. The downside is that they tend to be bossy. “They’re typically inflexible — they don’t like change and are hesitant to step out of their comfort zone,” says child and family therapist Dr. Michelle P. Maidenberg.

Heidi Klum is a pushover parent

Middle kids — like Heidi and Seal’s sons Henry, 5, and Johan 3 — tend to naturally go with the flow in order to find their place in the family. They were once the baby but had to adapt to their new role as big brother or sister once the newest bundle of joy arrived. They’re also more likely to make strong bonds with friends outside of the family, since they receive less attention at home. “Middle kids are in a difficult position in a family because they think they’re not valued,” says Dr. Maidenberg. “It’s easy for them to be left out and get lost in the shuffle.” In order to make sure that your middle kids aren’t feeling forgotten, HollyMoms, you need to make them your focus every so often so that they feel empowered. Letting them choose the board game or movie on family fun night is a great way to keep them involved and remind them that they’re just as important as their siblings.

Heidi and Seal, 47, better keep a close eye on their littlest one, Lou, 11 months. According to the research, the last-born are charming and extremely social. They’re also prone to taking more risks than their older siblings, in order to impress their parents. “None of their accomplishments seem original,” says psychologist Dr. Kevin Lenman, author of The Birth Order Book. “Their siblings have already learned to talk, read and ride a bike. So parents react with less spontaneous joy at their accomplishments.”

Vote for the most stylish celebrity kid here

But what if you only have one kid? Research suggests that an only child has a lot of the same personality traits as the first-born. They’re equally ambitious and articulate but they have an even better ability to communicate with adults. The only problem may arise if your only child doesn’t have any kids his or her own age to play with. “Make sure your child spends time with his peers from an early age,” says Dr. Maidenberg, who feels that playgroups and sports teams are a great way to socialize young children.

Hey HollyMoms, does this sound familiar? Do your kids fit the mold of these personality traits?

Tori Spelling says she uses the buddy system with her husband, Dean McDermott, to juggle parenting their two kids.

Tori Spelling, 37, who is busy promoting her first children’s book Presenting…Tallulah, admits that the hardest part about being a working mom is leaving her two children Liam, 3, and Stella, 2, at home. “I work a lot so there’s times I have to leave and now that they’re getting older, they know,” Tori tells TODAYMoms. “They’re hanging on to you and the tears are coming and you’re explaining I’ll be back, I always come back. It’s hard.”

Tori, who has been married to Dean McDermott, 43, since 2006, says when it comes to being a good mom, you just have to go with your gut.

“The best piece of advice I ever got from a mom was don’t listen to anything else anyone tells you,” Tori says. “Don’t take advice because you’ll go insane. Everyone has a way of doing something. Just listen to your instincts, that’s all you need.”

Luckily Tori and Dean, who co-star in the Oxygen reality show Tori & Dean: Weddings, along with Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, have a buddy system and work as a team to get things done. “With two, we kind of divide and conquer,” she says. “It’s funny, Liam will be like, ‘Only Daddy puts me in the car’ and Stella will be like, ‘Only Mommy puts me in the car,’ so were like OK easy you go to that side, I’ll go to this side, let’s go. In the mornings we get up and we’ll talk to each other real quick and he’ll be like, ‘I got breakfast.’ I’m like, ‘I got clothes.’ Somehow we get it all done.”
