In light of Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy reveal on May 14, Barbara Walters told her co-hosts on The View that she had her ovaries removed to prevent getting ovarian cancer.

Barbara Walters Had Ovaries Removed

Barbara, 83, said that Angelina’s actions hit close to home for her. She said:

“My sister passed away from ovarian cancer and I had my ovaries removed. It’s not like having the breasts because people don’t see it. But it’s a decision you have to make — it’s preventative. What I think with Angelina Jolie — she’s such a sex symbol and we associate sex with breasts. And the fact that she did this and has retained her beauty and her sexuality. I think it was brave of her, she did it for her own health, but it was so brave to write about it. A women’s sexuality is not tied up with her breasts.”

Barbara Walters Supports Cancer Research

Barbara’s sister did pass away from ovarian cancer and that’s why she’s been helping support research to find a cure for many, many years.

“The subject of ovarian cancer is personal to me. My late sister, Jackie passed away from ovarian cancer in 1985. Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women. I think it’s very important that we help support ovarian cancer research so that we can find a cure or at the very least spread awareness, so that women can learn about early detection,” Barbara has said in the past.

Angelina Jolie: I Had Both My Breasts Removed

Earlier, we told you that Angelina, 37, decided to have a double mastectomy after her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 in 2007 from cancer. Angelina got tested and a “faulty gene,” known as BRCA1, was found. To take preventative measures, she had her breasts removed.

Angelina wrote in an op-ed piece in the New York Times:

“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer. I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices. Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.”

In 1999, Barbara interviewed Bill Clinton‘s former intern and mistress Monica, and it was watched by a phenomenal 74 million people.

Barbara famously asked Monica, “What will you tell your children when you have them?” She replied, “Mommy made a big mistake.” Barbara then ended the interview by saying “And that is the understatement of the year.”

2) Calling Katherine Hepburn A Tree

Barbara’s most hilarious career moment was asking Katherine Hepburn a bizarre question on 20/20. ”If you were a tree, what kind would you be?” Katherine responded “an oak” because they are “strong and pretty.”

3) Winning three Emmy’s

Barbara won three Emmy’s for her abilities at hosting a talk show. In 1975, she won the award for Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host for the Today show, followed by two Emmy’s for her work on The View in 2003 and 2009.

4) Moderating a Presidential Debate

I created ‘The View’ and am delighted it will last beyond my leaving it. I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain. I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women — and OK, some men too — who will be taking my place.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood said no one will ever be able to replace Barbara.

There’s only one Barbara Walters. And we look forward to making her final year on television as remarkable, path-breaking and news-making as Barbara herself. Adrianne Haslet is truly inspiring. The 32-year-old professional dancer and her Afghanistan war veteran husband Adam Davis were watching the Boston Marathon on April 15, when they were both blown off their feet by the second bomb. Adrienne said it was “so scary,” but thankfully she and her husband landed together, when she made a terrifying realization.

Adrianne appeared via satellite on The View on April 25, where she told Barbara Walters and Elizabeth Hasselbeck about her experience.

Adrianne said she and her husband — who just returned from duty — were having a “lazy Monday” and watching the marathon went the first bomb went off.

We were watching the marathon when the first bomb went off. We both looked at each other and we knew it was nothing good like a confetti bomb. We knew it was an attack, we hugged each other. All of a sudden I started screaming because we knew it was not one bomb. Then we were knocked off our feet.

Adrianne and her husband landed four feet from where they were standing, and she she saw her horrifying injury.

We landed together, and we both thought we were not wounded. I thought I was fine and then I sat up. I went to move my feet, and I said to my husband ‘I think there is something wrong with my foot.’ And my whole ankle was missing. In that moment I thought my life was over.

Barbara and Adrienne were both in tears at this point, and then Adrienne spoke about what it was like to re learn she lost her foot.

Adrienne woke up from surgery the day after the attack, and how she reacted when she learned her foot was gone.

I woke up from surgery and my mom was there. I said ‘Can you help me move my foot?’ and she said ‘Honey you don’t have a foot.’ I lost it, I screamed. I threw water bottles and I beat up my legs. It was impossible to hear.

Poor Adrienne. She is such an inspiration however, as she is not letting this injury get her down. She has vowed to run the marathon next year, and she will dance again.

Most excitingly, she has been asked to appear on Dancing with The Stars! She will appear on the April 29 show.

Barbara Walters may be saying goodbye to the ladies on The View and her 52-year broadcast career. According to a new report, a plan has been put in place for Barbara to retire in May 2014.

Barbara Walters To Retire — Will Get Proper Sendoff

Barbara, 83, would be given a big sendoff with retrospectives and other special content in the weeks leading to her retirement, which would celebrate her five decades-long career, HollywoodLife.com’s sister site Deadline reports.

It’s still unclear whether Barbara will go for a full retirement or keep some sort of presence on TV with occasional appearances and specials.

It was first reported that Barbara would be retiring in Dec. 2011 when TMZ reported that she made a comment to President Obama during a break in an interview. She was overheard saying, “I’m retiring next year.” However, Dec. 2011 came and went and Barbara has not yet retired.

Her falling accident and hospitalization with chicken pox earlier this year have suggested that Barbara may be ready to reduce her workload.

‘The View’ May Get A Complete Overhaul

If Barbara were to leave The View, which she executive produces and hosts, she’d follow Joy Behar’s lead — the only other original panelist besides Barbara. The comedian announced earlier this year that she’d be exiting the program in the summer. Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s future is also uncertain, suggesting that ABC may be looking to give the long-running program an overhaul.

Barbara has had a monumental career. She became the first woman to co-host a news program when she joined Today in 1974 and she became the first co-anchor of a network evening news program when she joined ABC Evening News in 1976. Joy Behar has given up her seat at The View‘s daily morning show on ABC, and it turns out Barbara Walters is assisting producers in their quest for a new co-host!

Who Will Take Joy’s Spot On ‘The View’

The report claims that ABC wants to shake up the show and they’re looking for a “feisty woman” who has similar views to Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

One woman in mind is Rachel Campos-Duffy, a 41-year-old mother-of-six, who is a strict Catholic. She actually tried out for Lisa Ling‘s spot in 1999.

Another woman reportedly in the running is Jaci Velasquez, 33, who has two kids and her own radio show. But perhaps celebs Gloria Estefan, or Raquel Welch may nab the coveted spot.

An insider tells The Daily Mail: “Of course, we want someone outspoken and passionate, just like the other women on the show. We have a few months until Joy leaves and whoever joins has to add something new and fresh to the show. They have to fit in, but also be prepared to be combative.”

ABC has “no comment.”

Not only is Elisabeth Hasselbeck staying put on The View, but she and Sherri Shepherd have officially teamed up against a new common enemy: Spring Breakers! Yes, the new Selena Gomez movie is being targetted by the show’s conservative pundits — more specifically, Ashley Benson‘s decision to promote the R-rated flick on the cover of Seventeen magazine, many of whose readers are too young to see the movie without an adult.

“[The editors] target 12- to 19-year-olds, so you’ve got a large population of Seventeen readers who haven’t seen the movie,” Sherri pointed out March 12 on The View. “I get that people want to evolve … but when you want to evolve into a adult, you need to leave the kid stuff behind.”

(It should be noted that the current issue of Seventeen promotes Ashley’s role on the teen-friendly series Pretty Little Liars far more than her racy role in Spring Breakers.)

“I haven’t seen this film, but I know they’re marketing it to a ton of teenagers,” Elisabeth added. “I don’t care if you’re twelve or fifteen. The problem is we don’t think about how erotic sex, when it comes to teens and media, affects their behavior. … We’re not asking that question enough when it comes to sex.”

(Yes, because every good argument begins with “I haven’t seen this film.”)

Then the conversation pretty much devolved into Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg lamenting how they never looked like any of the girls in Seventeen magazine growing up.

March 11 turned out to be a busy day for the ladies of The View. Not only did Barbara Walters shoot down rumors that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is being forced off the show, but Joy Behar also made her first on-air statement about her own decision to leave after 16 years. “When you announced this last week, it was very bittersweet,” Barbara told her on-air. “I want what’s best for you, but I will miss you. But you have your reasons for wanting to go, and I’m happy when you’re happy.”

The ladies of The View played an impromptu game of True or False on the show’s March 11 episode, addressing the rumors that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is being fired for her conservative views. According to the mistress of the round table, Barbara Walters, those rumors are completely “false.”

“We value and appreciate [Elisabeth's] point of view,” Barbara told the audience. “She is tougher than she looks. We have no plans for Elisabeth to leave the show.”

Needless to say, Elisabeth looked very relieved.

One person who is leaving, however, is Joy Behar. The comedian had previously given a statement to HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site Deadline, but this was the first time she officially addressed the issue on The View.

“When you announced this last week, it was very bittersweet,” Barbara told Joy. “I want what’s best for you, but I will miss you. But you have your reasons for wanting to go, and I’m happy when you’re happy.”

That’s right, people, the ladies of The View actually got along! But don’t worry, they were quickly back at each other’s throats moments later as they discussed the roles of women in the workplace.

So how did this Elisabeth rumor get started in the first place? A source told Us Weekly that admittedly-polarizing Elisabeth was too conservative for most viewers.

“The viewers they polled all said she was too extreme and right wing,” a source told the mag. “People did not watch the show because of Elisabeth. So they told her yesterday her contract would not be renewed.”
