Since passports were unattainable for these babies—who were their actual biological children born via a surrogate—this couple hid them in a chest and tried to sneak them across the border!

What a sad situation for this family. After welcoming their twin girls, Vicky and Kim, via a surrogate in Ukraine, a French couple realized that the government would not issue the 2-month-old babies passports because officials there don’t recognize surrogacy. That’s when, out of desperation, they hid the twins in a chest under a mattress in their car and attempted to smuggle them over the border into Hungary.

“We are not child traffickers, we are their parents,” the French mother tells UK’s The Guardian, not releasing her name for fear that publicity will hurt her children. “We tried to cross the border out of despair and love for our little girls without knowing what would happen.” The couple is currently under house arrest in Ukrainian city, Uzhorod.

Border guards discovered the twin girls after hearing loud music and becoming suspicious of the two men in the car’s behavior, a 38-year-old and his father. The men, whose names have not be released, could face up to seven years in prison if convicted of illegal transportation of children abroad.

The babies, who doctors say are in perfect health, were taken to a nearby hospital, where their parents were allowed to see them briefly on Wednesday night, March 23. “They are doing very well, it’s a very good hospital,” the mother said. “We hope to get them back.”

Sadly, this kind of situation has happened before. A gay Belgian couple waited almost two years to be reunited with their son, born via a surrogate in Ukraine, after government authorities would not issue him a passport. They also attempted to smuggle him across European borders. So heartbreaking.

The 16-year-old, who has never been diagnosed with the condition, describes it as a “small case,” but admits the school tutor who accompanies him on tour has to structure classes specifically to cater to the condition, which causes him to lose focus and become easily distracted.

Justin tells British newspaper The Guardian, “I have a small case of ADD. It’s self-claimed.”

“If I don’t understand something, and I’m bored, I don’t pay attention, so my teacher has to really make it fun for me,” he says. “Every hour he has to give me a five- to 10-minute break. But after the break, I’ll be back into it. I’ll be good.”
