Recent studies reveal that television, the beloved babysitter of many busy parents, can cause psychological and physical damage to children. New research from the University of Bristol in the UK explains that watching more than two hours of TV is a risk to the mental and physical health of kids. “Watching TV or playing computer games for more than two hours a day is related to greater psychological difficulties irrespective of how active children are,” Dr. Angie Page from the University of Bristol says.

Experts say watching too much of the box can cause aggressive behavior in toddlers as well as attention problems, education issues and obesity. And according to a study published in the U.S. journal Pediatrics, simply upping levels of physical activity will not and does not balance out the damage done.

Dr. Aric Sigman, of the British Psychological Society, has been warning people for a while of the dangers of watching too much television. In 2007, he published a report called “Visual Voodoo” that found 15 ways TV viewing was damaging kids’ health. “Watching television, irrespective of the content, is increasingly associated with unfavorable biological and cognitive changes,” he warns. He recommends children under 3 should not watch any TV, while 3- to 5-year-olds should watch no more than half an hour of “good quality programming” a day. Dr. Sigman adds that children ranging from 5 to 12 years of age should only watch one hour a day, and teenagers, an hour and a half.

But as many moms and dads know, this isn’t an easy thing to do. “When I first discovered my 2-year-old would sit in front of the TV for 20 minutes — meaning I could get on with something else — it was a relief. I think that’s how most mothers feel,” psychologist and mother-of-two Sue Firth explains. “So I don’t think we should blame moms for letting children watch the box. There is nothing wrong with TV — it’s part of our lives these days. You can’t fight it.”

But she understands and advises parents to be sensible. She warns that television is like an addiction, so suddenly taking it away from your kids is not the way to go. “Try to choose better-quality programs and play with them more away from the box so that they use their imagination differently,” she says. “Don’t beat yourself up about it — our kids are more sophisticated than we were and so are the TV choices available. Just apply a bit of common sense.”

So, we were just watching Denise Richards on LX-TV and I have to say, the actress just looks prettier and prettier. Rich brown hair color, perfect skin, glamorous makeup. Kind of lovely considering her husband doesn’t exactly look so good right now. Kind of makes you wonder…was Denise preparing for her close-up?

I mean, you cannot deny the facts here, people: Charlie Sheen (Denise’s ex-husband with whom she has two children) is kind of the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to generating publicity. Denise, who’s promoting a new show, Blue Mountain State, just happened to be here in NYC on a press junket at the same time her ex-husband decided to implode. With an escort. In an adjacent hotel room. Coincidence?

Doesn’t really matter, does it? Denise is lookin’ mighty fine while her much-troubled ex looks worse and worse. Ladies with an ax to grind toward your exes, take note: looking smoking hot at all times is the best revenge because when the time comes everyone looks at you and thinks, “Wow, no wonder she’s not with him anymore.”

Girls, when they turn the cameras on you when your ex goes down in flames, make sure the hair and makeup is in place. Looking good really is the best revenge. Well played, Denise!

In case you’ve been living under a rock, it’s Discovery Channel’s Shark Week! Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars can’t get enough of the up close and sometimes frightening reality TV weeklong event!

Hollywood is OBSESSED with the Great White Way and we’re not talking about Broadway! Lauren Conrad, Joe Jonas, and Stephanie Pratt, are all totally into Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and they can’t stop tweeting about it!

“Who else is excited for SHARK WEEK?!!!!” tweeted Stephanie and then Lauren immediately responded, saying “I live for SHARK WEEK!! I didn’t know we shared this love! I see a shark themed slumber party in our future…”

But get this, Joe is into the jaws action too: “Shark week august 1st? Sweeeettttt.”

Clearly, no one can get enough of cable’s longest running event. Make sure to tune in and get a piece of the action. Another all-new special, called Best Bites, premieres tonight at 10 PM!

It’s only one episode in, and I’m already addicted Celebrity Apprentice celebs Cyndi and Curtis!

It’s only been one episode and I’m already hooked on NBC’s reality boardroom show, Celebrity Apprentice! First off, let’s talk Curtis Stone. I don’t know if I’ve been living under a ROCK or what, but this guy Curtis Stone … he’s hot. Like, really really sexy.

And Curtis really had a chance to shine in his first challenge! It was Men v. Women and the teams had to open competing burger restaurants to raise money for their charities. Curtis’ skills definitely came in handy! And all would have gone super smoothly, if the ex governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojivich, didn’t spend the entire day defending his innocence instead of getting Joan Rivers her burger while it was still hot!

Of course the women’s team (even though they lost) is really full of the big stars. Sharon Osbourne, Selita Ebanks, and last night’s first team leader, Cyndi Lauper. And Cyndi is amaaaazing. Sure, she was a little scattered as a team leader, but she worked really hard serving her tables! She even sang “True Colors” in attempt to raise more tips for her team. Also, Cyndi is like the sweetest person ever because 1) None of her friends are rich. They’re artists. 2) Her only rich friend is Rosie O’Donnell and she totally stuck up for her in the board room when Donald Trump called Rosie “disgusting” and 3) She couldn’t pick one person to fire because she truly believed everyone did the best job they could do. (Which is true, they did.)

Also, did anyone else notice that Ivanka Trump (who I love) and Donald Trump Jr. speak the exact same way? It kind of started creeping me out after awhile. But in the end I was happy Cindy didn’t get kicked off. I want her to sing in every episode!

Sad news: ’80s teen star Corey Haim died of an overdose, according to the LAPD.

Actor and 80′s teen idol Corey Haim was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment this morning, Mar. 10, according to the LAPD. He was 38. Corey had been living with his mother, Judy, who was battling breast cancer according to Radar Online.

Corey’s agent and family friend, Mark Heaslip, told TMZ that just after midnight, Corey went into his mother’s room and woke her up, just before collapsing in front of her. The ambulance arrived 20 minutes later to take Corey to St. Joseph’s hospital in Burbank, CA, where he died. Police arrived at the hospital around 4 am to investigate.

Canadian-born Haim starred in the films Murphy’s Romance, The Lost Boys, License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream. He and his frequent co-star Corey Feldman earned the name “The Two Coreys” and even starred in an A&E ‘reality’ called The Two Coreys from 2007 to 2008.

Haim has a history of struggling with drugs and financial issues. He filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 1997 and went to rehab over 15 times, including a stint in 2000. A year later, the troubled teen actor was hospitalized for a drug-induced stroke.

He’s admitted to using hard drugs and prescription pills. “I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack,” he said.

“I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck,” he said. “But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day — the doctors could not believe I was taking that much. And that was just the Valium — I’m not talking about the other pills I went through.”

Corey Haim and Corey Feldman were in talks to star in The Lost Boys 2 in 2007, but Haim was still struggling with addiction. At the time, Feldman said he refused to have further contact with Haim until he got sober. —Corynne Steindler

The last thing we’d ever expect from the uber-cocky (and nearly always correct) Simon Cowell is that he – well – sometimes may get it wrong. But a miracle has occurred, and the over-confident American Idol judge has finally admitted that he doesn’t always make the right decision when choosing American Idol’s top 24 contestants. Gasp!

“You watch it back and you think, ‘You know what? I could have made different decisions here,” Simon, 50, told reporters Feb. 18. “This happens on the shows I do in other countries [too].”

When we watch the edited footage on TV, it always seems so cut and dried as to which contestants should go through and which should get the ax. However, Simon says the entire process goes by too quickly for the judges to really think through their decisions.

“In hindsight, I think it would have been much easier that we could have had maybe five or six days to think about it and really review the performances,” Simon explained, adding, “But we had a limited time and decisions were made relatively quickly.”

These quick-fire decisions make or break it for aspiring singers. Fortunately, if the judges do make a mistake and cut someone loose too soon, there’s still hope.

“Luckily, they can always re-audition the next year,” Simon concluded.
