Malala Yousafzai is still recovering from the gunshot wounds she suffered on Oct. 9 when an armed Taliban militant charged her school bus and shot her at point-blank range in the head and neck. The 14-year-old activist, who was targeted for her efforts to promote education and equality for girls in the Swat valley of Pakistan, arrived in the U.K. on Oct. 15, where she will receive further treatment.

Malala was being treated at a military hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, when Pakistani doctors and international medical experts decided to fly her to Britain, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“Malala will require prolonged care to fully recover from the physical and psychological effects of trauma that she has received,” according to a statement by the Pakistani military.

She was flown in an aircraft equipped supplied by the United Arab Emirates that contained specialized medical equipment, and was transported to the major trauma center at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Her treatment will include skull reconstruction and neurological rehabilitation for the injuries suffered from the bullet to her skull, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

On Oct. 14, thousands of protestors gathered in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, in support of Malala’s activism against the Taliban, and as a protest to the militant violence in Pakistan. The demonstration, which was arranged by the liberal Pakistani political party Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was the largest so far in support of Malala and her two wounded classmates.

Malala was targeted for speaking out against the Taliban and promoting the education of young girls. She blogged about her views for an award-winning blog for the BBC under a pen name. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have taken responsibility for the shootings, and have promised to target her again if she survives the attack.

No word on how long Malala will be staying in the U.K or if she will return to Pakistan.

Malala Yousafzai, a well-known equality activist in Swat, Pakistan, was shot in the head by the Taliban on a school bus filled with fellow classmates on Oct. 9. The 14-year-old girl was targeted because of her efforts to promote education for girls.

Malala was sitting on the bus ready to leave school when an armed man with a beard charged the school bus and asked which girl was Malala. When a nearby girl pointed her out, the gunman opened fire on both Malala and another girls on the bus.

The activist, Pakistani National Youth Peace Prize suffered injuries to her head and neck, but surgeons successfully removed the bullets on Oct. 9, although she remains unconscious. The other girl is in stable condition.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have taken responsibility for the shootings, and a spokesman told a Pakastani newspaper she was targeted because she is a “secular-minded lady” and this incident should be a warning for other young people like her.

They’ve also promised to come after her again if she survives for her “pro-West” beliefs, and for idolizing Barack Obama.

“In attacking Malala, the terrorists have failed to grasp that she is not only an individual, but an icon of courage and hope who vindicates the great sacrifices that the people of Swat and the nation gave, for wresting the valley from the scourge of terrorism,” Pakistan’s top military officer General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said in response the attacks.

Malala is well-respected in Swat Valley for her political efforts, and even won the Pakistani National Youth Peace Prize in 2011. Swat Valley schools closed on Oct. 9 in protest of the attacks, and military officers stood guard at Malala’s home to protect her family from the Taliban.

What a courageous young woman. We applaud Malala for standing up for her beliefs, and we are keeping her and her family in our thoughts.

So much for getting a rest — IT consultant Sohaib Athar, who says he was trying to “take a break from the rat race” by staying in Abbottabad in north Pakistan, live tweeted one of the biggest events in history: the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden!

At about 1AM on May 1, Sohaib tweeted complaining about the disturbance a helicopter was making nearby. “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event),” he wrote. “Go away helicopter – before I take out my giant swatter :-/”

“A huge window shaking bang here in Abbottabad…” the information-technology consultant continued. “I hope its not the start of something nasty :-S”

Within an hour, Sohaib mused that the helicopter didn’t belong to Pakistan or the Taliban. “Since taliban (probably) don’t have helicpoters, and since they’re saying it was not “ours”, so must be a complicated situation #abbottabad” he tweeted.

After hours of speculating why helicopters were over Abbottabad, Sohaid finally connected the night’s events with the fact that the United States and President Barack Obama were behind that raid that left bin Laden dead.

“Uh oh, now I’m the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it,” Sohaid wrote. “I need to sleep, but Osama had to pick this day to die :-/”

Because of his tweets, Sohaib now has a remarkable 40,000 + followers on Twitter.

Sohaib last tweeted on May 2: “Bin Laden is dead. I didn’t kill him. Please let me sleep now.”
