New guidelines from doctors in England persuades women to have abortions. Are they serious!?

18 senior gynecologists, nurses and abortion providers from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London have released new advice saying that pregnant women should be told that having an abortion is safer than delivering a baby. The guidelines also say that “the great majority” of women who terminate their pregnancy will not suffer from psychological problems, like sadness or regret, following the procedure. Hmm, this sounds pretty sketchy to us.

The guideline is still in draft form, but has already horrified medical ethicists and Christian groups, who believe it is forcing an “absurdly liberal agenda” on women facing a tough situation. On the other side though, abortion clinics are obviously supporting the advice and are aiming it at doctors, nurses and counselors who deal with terminations on a daily basis.

“Asking this group to comment objectively and honestly about the physical and psychological consequences of abortion for women is like asking Philip Morris or British American Tobacco to review the health consequences of smoking or McDonald’s to outline the adverse effects of fast food consumption,” Dr. Peter Saunders, of the Christian Medical Fellowship, says, accusing the RCOG of ‘perpetuating a myth’ about the safety of abortion. “There are simply too many financial and ideological vested interests at stake that threaten a fair assessment.”

Other experts say that this “guidance” takes a pro-abortion stance and forgets to truly look into the psychological damage women face after undergoing a termination, specifically the feeling of guilt. ‘The message this sends out is very worrying,” Professor Patricia Casey, a consultant psychiatrist and fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, says. ‘There are more than 30 studies showing an association between psychological trauma and abortion.”
