Annie (Shenae Grimes) apparently awoke from her coma crazier than ever, because instead of confessing her love Liam (Matt Lanter) on the Feb. 4 episode of 90210 — color me crazy, but wasn’t that the whole point of her dream?! — she actually decided she was in love with Riley (Riley Smith)! Seriously, did I miss something?

She rushed to the hospital, told him she loved him, and everything appeared to be sunshine and unicorns. But because this is Annie we’re talking about — her fairytale is more likely to end with a fiery boat explosion than a horse-drawn carriage — tragedy was lurking just around the corner.

Riley’s doctor called to tell Annie that, due to complications during his surgery, he passed away. I’m not entirely sure how Riley died — I’m no doctor, let’s be real — but my theory is that a disgruntled “Lannie” shipper snuck into the hospital, dressed like a sexy nurse, and messed with his IV drip.

Real talk, though: I was really sad to see Riley go. He was a fun actor, and had he not been introduced as a love interest for Annie, maybe he would have stood a fighting chance. Heaven got a beautiful new set of wheels tonight.

Naomi & Max Call It Quits — Again

Naomi’s (AnnaLynne McCord) relationship also came to an end this week, though her story wasn’t quite as tragic as Annie’s. Basically, Naomi’s marriage counselor told her and Max (Josh Zuckerman) to focus on themselves for a little while — like Naomi needs anyone to tell her to do that — and the end result wasn’t pretty.

While Naomi realized she wanted to move to Tokyo and become a princess — I don’t have the time or energy to explain that one — Max decided he wanted to move to enroll at MIT. But because Massachusetts is cold, and apparently full of pilgrims, Naomi told him she didn’t want to tag along.

Cue the breakup. Cue Max sending Naomi a tiara. Cue Naomi doing her best impression of a human with real emotions.

Liam’s A Lover AND A Fighter

In what is clearly an early birthday present for me — or late, depending on how you choose to read your calendar — Liam spent the entire episode in full-on cage-fighter mode. I’m talking shirtless, sweaty and fighting. The whole time. “I’m not here to talk, I’m here to hit stuff,” he said, without a hint of irony. (Liam Court, my prince!)

But things got kind of dark when Liam got kicked out of the gym for getting too physical with one of the other fighters. That’s right, someone actually complained about Liam getting too physical with them. I don’t get it, either.

I don’t see this whole cage-fighter story line going very well for Liam — we all remember how well it ended for Ryan on The O.C. — but I’m willing to enjoy the view while it lasts.

Teddy & Silver Play ‘Catch’ With Their Embryos

After Navid (Michael Steger) sent him on an unexpected guilt trip — apparently if Silver (Jessica Stroup) doesn’t have babies now, she never will — Teddy (Trevor Donovan) agreed to let her keep the embryos. But wait, there’s a catch! Silver has to use a surrogate to carry the child, rather than let it live inside her stomach… or wherever babies live when they’re all gross and wet.

So ‘Operation: Make A Baby’ took a drastic turn, but at least it’s still happening. Now there’s just that small issue of how Silver is going to pay for the baby once it’s born. Does she have a job? Has she ever had a job? How much money did Jackie leave her when she died?! These are the tough questions, people.

Everybody Hates Dixon

Dixon’s (Tristan Wilds) plan to get revenge on Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) for being a super slut totally backfired on him this week. He basically turned her into his beautiful trained monkey, forcing her to sing embarrassing jingles, etc., all the while funneling her earnings into a secret scholarship fund for Megan (Jessica Parker Kennedy.) But when the girls found out what Dixon was up to, they both stormed off furiously.

In summary: Adrianna hates Dixon, Megan hates Dixon, and at this point, I’m pretty sure Dixon hates Dixon too. Good times all around.

Last week’s 90210 revealed Colin’s (Rob Mayes) devious plot to take down Max’s company, and on the Nov. 19 episode, the drama with Annie’s (Shenae Grimes) new boyfriend finally comes to a head. “There are definitely more surprises coming,” Rob tells HollywoodLife.com. “Riley and Colin revisit each other.”

Though Rob won’t confirm my suspicion that Colin’s 90210 journey ends tonight, he says he’s been surprised at the outpouring of support for his character. That’s right, support.

“The tweets started coming in once my episodes started airing,” Rob tells me. “Fans were saying, ‘This is making me think, actually. Maybe it’s not just Annie and Liam!’”

Rob also admits that Colin’s dark side was as much of a surprise for him as it was for the audience.

“I had no idea [Colin was bad] when I went in to read for the character,” Rob says. “I was doing one of my fittings, still trying to figure out who this guy is without any framework, and one of the wardrobe people went, ‘I think your character’s going to be bad.’ That was the first I had heard there could be a twist to him. … They know all.”

For those of you craving more Rob after his 90210 journey ends, you might want to check out John Dies At The End, a movie whose title — Rob insists — doesn’t spoil anything.

“This character was so different than anything I’d done,” Rob says. “He’s just this adrenaline-seeking, crazy drug-addict dude who’s so fun-loving. … We premiered it at Sundance, then we took it South by Southwest. It had a great festival run. I believed in the picture, but you never know what’s going to happen after you wrap.”

And for something slightly lighter, Rob also stars in Golden Christmas 3, premiering Nov. 25 at 9 p.m. on ION.

“I read the script and thought, ‘This is adorable’” Rob says of the holiday movie, which also stars One Tree Hill‘s Shantel VanSanten and Awkward‘s Nikki Deloach. ”And I’ve never done a Christmas movie. I haven’t had that much fun on set since John Dies, which was more than two years ago.”

For the record, Riley Smith knew that joining 90210 as a love interest for Annie (Shenae Grimes) was going to be an “uphill battle.” Not only do Annie’s boyfriends tend to have short life spans — few, if any, are ever heard from again — but there’s an overwhelming number of “Lannie” fans who refuse to  accept Annie with anyone other than Liam (Matt Lanter). But Riley tells HollywoodLife.com not to worry; he’s got a plan.

“I realized, very quickly, that I was in a lose-lose situation,” Riley admits. “I prepared myself for that. This is a character who’s always on the offensive, and I figured if I played him like that, he’d be harder to pick on.”

Riley, who met with Push Girls star Tiphany Adams to prepare for his wheelchair-bound role, says he’s really enjoying acting opposite Shenae — especially when things get particularly fiery between Annie and Riley.

“There’s going to be a lot more of that,” Riley says of their characters’ tension. “What I like is that they’re really giving our story line time to play out. That relationship is going to evolve. … Annie’s finally met her match. Riley’s always going to one-up her and he’s never going to back down. You’re going to see that all year, where every other minute they’re fighting and making up.”

And what would one of Annie’s boyfriends be without a few demons?

“His fiancée left him after he became paralyzed, and that’s a really deep-seeded thing that causes him to be the way he is,” Riley explains. “As [he and Annie] get further into their relationship, you’ll see a lot of those things come out based on those past experiences.”

But even though Riley’s enjoying his time with Annie, he urges the “Lannie” fans to be patient.

“They need to understand that they’re going to get what they want, but between now and then, they need to enjoy the ride,” he explains. “Because once they get it, where’s it going to go? It’s just going to end. I think they need to be careful what they wish for.”

Every girl dreams of landing a guy with a mean set of wheels, and it looks like that’s exactly what Annie (Shenae Grimes) is doing in the fifth season of 90210. Shenae was spotted earlier this week in Los Angeles filming with new co-star Riley Smith, who is joining the cast this season as a love interest for the former call girl.

You might think Riley’s character being wheelchair-bound would impede Annie from dating him, but as all fans know, she loves a challenge. (Remember when she dated that priest? And that drug dealer? And her ex-boyfriend’s half brother?)

Shenae’s on-screen brother Tristan Wilds was also spotted filming, fueling speculation that Dixon survives his car crash — and comes out looking better than ever, apparently.

HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site TVLine initially broke the news of Riley’s casting.
