Though it may have taken five months for Randy Travis to be formally charged with a DWI on Jan. 11 after he was arrested in Sherman, TX for driving while intoxicated on Aug. 7, the sentencing from his guilty plea has been much swifter. On Jan. 31, the country singer was sentenced to 180 days in jail.

Randy, 53, plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated on Jan. 31, TMZ reports. According to the Grayson County District Attorney, though he received the 180 day jail sentence, it’s been probated for two years — which means if he can manage to stay out of trouble in that time, he’ll also stay out of jail. He’s also been ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.

The website further reports that Randy will have to check in to an inpatient alcohol facility for a minimum of 30 days and serve 100 hours of community service. Regarding future driving privileges, the crooner must install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he drives for two years. The device measures the blood alcohol level of the driver and will not allow the car to start is there is any alcohol registered.

The DWI charge was punishable by a maximum of two years in jail and a $4,000 fine.

When Randy was formally charged, his lawyer, Larry Friedman, spoke with E! News and confirmed that the singer was found to have had a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.15, which is nearly double the legal limit in the state of Texas.

Larry also said that Randy was cooperating fully. “Randy has a lot of respect for law enforcement in Grayson [County.] He’s cooperating fully. He recognizes his situation and he is tending to his personal matters. And we will decide between now and the end of the month whether he pleads not guilty or agrees to another plea that involves rehabilitation,” he said.

The DWI charge could land Randy a punishment of a maximum two-year jail sentence and a $4,000 fine. A separate possible charge of felony retaliation hangs over the crooner’s head for having allegedly threatened his arresting officers.

Larry told E! News that the drunk driving charge “is pretty usual for this type of situation,” but he has hope that he and the prosecutors will be able to work things out. ”Randy has a lot of respect for law enforcement in Grayson [County.] He’s cooperating fully. He recognizes his situation and he is tending to his personal matters. And we will decide between now and the end of the month whether he pleads not guilty or agrees to another plea that involves rehabilitation,” he said.

It appears that Randy is making a pre-emptive strike at clean up his act. “He has begun a personal revitalization program. He’s on a three-hour-a-day exercise regimen with new diet and exercise. He’s completely off of alcohol,” Larry says. “He has recorded 31 new songs for an album that will be released in April. And he’s paying a lot of attention to his personal matters. We expect 2013 to be an extraordinary year for him. We’re also looking at a couple of movie scripts for him as well.”

Randy’s next court date hasn’t been announced, but we with him luck with a better 2013!

It’s been a rough couple of days for Randy Travis. The country music icon, 53, was found lying naked in the middle of a Texas road Aug. 7 next to his car — which he crashed. Before Randy was arrested for DUI, as well as “retaliation and obstruction,” someone placed a call to 9-1-1 to report that a drunken (and still naked) Randy had stumbled into a convenience store looking for cigarettes.

To make matters even more insane, a source tells TMZ that Randy threatened to shoot and kill the officers who arrived to arrest him.

Though Randy was taken to jail in the nude, he left Aug. 8 dressed head-to-toe in a brand-new ensemble — entirely made of paper.

To be honest, 2012 in general hasn’t been a terrific year for Randy. He was arrested in February for allegedly getting drunk outside a Baptist church after a fight with his girlfriend. (So, hey, at least he’s consistent!)
