Sir Paul McCartney can usually do no wrong, but this legendary singer took the stage with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and other members of Nirvana’s band and now Kurt Cobain‘s widow Courtney Love says she’s “not amused.”

The 70-year-old seemed unphased as he sang songs like “Cut Me Some Slack.”

“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together,” Paul told The Sun. “I said, “Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me, “That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.”

Other singers performed in the evening like Alicia Keys, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and Kanye West.

You never know what to expect at the MTV VMA’s! Anything can happen when you put all of the hottest singers, actors and rappers in the same room. From the very first Video Music Awards show in 1984 — when Madonna dry-humped the stage at Radio City Music Hall while wearing a wedding dress and singing “Like A Virgin” — MTV made it clear that this wasn’t going to be anything like your parents awards show.

This years VMA’s are sure to shock. So to get you in the mood to rock HollywoodLife has compiled a list of the all-time best (and worst) VMA moments:

1. Krist Novoselic of Nirvana nearly knocks himself out with his bass guitar (1992)

Grunge rock reined supreme in the early ‘90s and no band was hotter than Nirvana. Too bad, bassist Krist Novoselic was blessed with musical skills but not coordination. After tossing his 30-pound guitar in the air during their performance of “Lithium”, he neglected to move his face out of its way and he ended up wandering off the stage with the teen spirit knocked out of him.

2. Michael Jackson & Lisa Marie Presley smooch (1994)

In an attempt to prove to the world that their love was the real deal, the King of Pop planted a majorly awkward kiss on his new wife, Lisa Marie Presley. “And just think, nobody thought this would last,” declared Michael Jackson. Turns out everybody was right and the couple divorced just two years later.

3. Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston get in a fake cat fight (1998)

When two divas as famous as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are sharing a stage the sparks are sure to fly. So to play up the rumors that they hated each other, the ladies donned identical dresses and staged a faux cat fight that ended with them ripping off each other’s dresses.

4. Diana Ross copes a feel of Lil’ Kim’s boob (1999)

Lil’ Kim let it all hang out in a sequined, breast baring purple body stocking.  Motown legend Diana Ross stunned the audience and viewers when she just couldn’t resist getting to second base with the controversial rapper.

5. Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford rages from the rafters (2000)

After Rage against the Machine lost the Best Rock Video award to Limp Bizkit, bassist Tim Commerford protested by climbing the stage scaffolding and began taunting Fred Durst during his acceptance speech. Maybe he knew that it was the last Moon Man RATM would be nominated for – the band broke up later that same year.

6. Britney Spears slithers around with a snake (2001)

Britney Spears ditched the school girl costume she donned during her first VMA appearance, in 1999, in favor of a much slinkier style when she performed “I’m A Slave 4 U” two years later. The then 19-year-old enraged animal rights activists but captivated the crowd when writhed around the stage with a most unusual dance partner – a huge boa constrictor.

7. Eminem throws down with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (2002)

Not even a stuffed animal is safe from the wrath of Eminem. When the abrasive hand-puppet from Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog got in the middle of a fight between Eminem and his then rival Moby, Eminem and his entourage attacked the canine comic and threw his notes to the ground!

8. Britney Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera’s make out session (2003)

Sure, it only lasted a few seconds, but it’s still one of the most famous kisses of all time. No one suspected that when Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera recreated Madonna’s 1984 “Like a Virgin” performance that it would end with the Madge’ swapping spit with both singers!

9. Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” comeback bombs (2007)

After a year of bizarre behavior that included shaving her head and being admitted to a psychiatric ward, Britney Spears wanted to show the world that she was still the princess of pop and agreed to open the show. Unfortunately, she was clearly not ready for her comeback and as she awkwardly stumbled through a lackluster performance of “Gimme More” that totally bombed.

10. Kanye West steals the spotlight from Taylor Swifts(2009)

How could you not feel bad for super-sweet Taylor Swift when Kanye West ripped the microphone out of her hands while she was accepting the VMA for Best Female Video? Sure he only wanted to give his buddy Beyonce a shout out, but stealing Taylor’s thunder was inexcusable.

Now that Frances Bean is 18, she’s taking the money and running! Does your heart go out to desperate mom Courtney?

Some moms say “happy birthday” with a card. Courtney Love, however, has chosen to celebrate daughter Frances Bean Cobain‘s 18th birthday (which was Aug. 18) with an incoherent rant on Twitter. “Youve done a dammed good job frances of destroying anything i could build that is positive,” Courtney, 46, tweeted at her daughter Aug. 19. “why would you leave me and my life in tatters like this and get angrier and angrier to justify it, i feel you missing me and i miss you too.”

The lead singer of Hole continued on, begging her daughter — who has inherited her late father Kurt Cobain‘s massive fortune now that she’s turned 18 — to come home to her.

“just come home,” Courtney tweeted. “it took a year but i got the sickest townhouse in the village, theres 4 floors, just come home, i pray to god snap out of it. i love you little bean, but please stop this madness over so much more money than your little self can comprehend.”

For those of you unfamiliar with Courtney and Frances’ situation, allow me to bring you up to speed:

• Frances is the daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in April 1994.
• Courtney had custody of Frances, until she lost it in Dec. 2009.
• The court placed Frances in the care of Kurt’s mom Wendy and sister Kimberly.
• Frances also got a restraining order against Courtney.

It’s a sad situation, for sure, but also a cautionary tale for all young moms in Hollywood. All the money in the world can’t make you a good parent. And once you’ve severed a relationship with your child, it’ll take some time for them to forgive you and come back.

Is Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter growing up to be as screwed up as her parents? All signs point to yes!

Frances Bean Cobain is clearly taking after her parents when it comes to a love of the arts: the 17-year-old daughter of deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Hole singer Courtney Love has created her first art exhibit – and from the looks of her charcoal sketches, she’s going through some major internal drama!

We already knew that Frances has a majorly screwed up family history. She was just two years old when her dad committed suicide in 1994. Her mom hasn’t fared much better – after struggling with drug abuse for years, the now-46-year-old lost custody of Frances for two years back in 2003 after overdosing on painkillers and threatening to commit suicide. Francis finally won emancipation from Courtney in 2009.

After all that, it’s not a shocker that the poor girl – who’s showing her art at LA’s La Luz de Jesus gallery under the pseudonym Fiddle Tim – has got a dark side – just like mom and dad. From what we’ve seen, her drawings are totally disturbing, with contorted faces and expletive-heavy text like, “I don’t owe you s—t,” “Goat S—t,” and “Treat Me Like Your Mother or I’ll Eat the Sun.” And it gets even darker! On the website for Frances’s show, she says that Satan is one of her influences!

So what will become of Frances Bean? Is she headed for inevitable disaster – or is she just expressing herself through art?

Uh-oh Kristen Stewart, watch out! Your BF, Robert Pattinson, is the frontrunner to play legendary Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain in movie about his life, and Scarlett Johansson is allegedly in talks to play Kurt’s leading lady, Courtney Love. ScarJo is a total femme fatale – we’d be worried if we were in your shoes!

Rob is desperately trying to get a hold of Courtney, Kurt’s real-life widow, in a bid to score the part. “Robert has been calling and emailing her non-stop. [Courtney] has been a bit wound up by his manners, but he is her number one choice to play Kurt,” reported The Sun April 9.

Courtney reportedly wants Scarlett, 25, to portray her in the David Fincher-directed film (which has the working title of All Apologies) – which would mean that Rob, 23, would have one majorly HOT co-star! But if R-Patz were to enjoy kissing his potential new leading lady, it might serve K-Stew right. Why? The 20-year-old DID say that she preferred kissing her Yellow Handkerchief co-star, Eddie Redmayne, to Rob! Ouch!

At the end of the day, we’re pretty sure Rob is still going to prefer Kristen to Scarlett. First of all, ScarJo is married to hottie Ryan Reynolds. Secondly, R-Patz and K-Stew have so much in common! After all, she already portrayed a rock icon on the big screen – Joan Jett in The Runaways. They’re already what we’d like to call ‘a musical match made in heaven.’ How could Scarlett possibly compete?
