Well, fellow Voice fans, that’s all she wrote. Season three is a wrap, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green have said their good-byes, and one finalist was named the winner — that’s not even mentioning all the musical guests who stopped by! What a night!

The Music

Rihanna opened the show with a pre-taped performance of “Diamonds”. She looked stunning, but it’s time she choose a new single and start performing that. Agree?

Each artist was given the choice to bring back artists from the season to join them one last time. Terry McDermott chose to perform with Rudy Paris, Amanda Brown, Bryan Keith, and Michaela Paige. They joined the Scot rocker on “Rock and Roll All Night” by KISS. This was a really fun performance, and it was great to see Amanda on stage again!

Nicholas David was joined by Smokey Robinson to sing “Cruising”. This is such a strange song for two men to sing together. I thought it was a duet between a man and woman, not two men crooning to an audience of woman, but it’s undeniable how great the two sounded together. I’ve always been a fan of the song ever since Gwyneth Paltrow sang it in that movie about karaoke called Duets. Remember that movie? No one else does, either.

The Killers stopped by and I fell asleep because they haven’t been exciting since I was a senior in high school. It was probably exciting for Cassadee Pope to sing with them, but, boy, zzzzz.

Mackenzie Bourg, Dez Duron, Julio Cesar Castillo, Cody Belew, and Diego Val returned as this season’s “biggest heartbreakers” to sing “Stacy’s Mom”. I was thrilled to see Cody back on stage, but this number mostly only reminded me how boring Dez and Diego were.

Kelly Clarkson Is Radiant, Duh

Kelly Clarkson stopped by to sing “Catch My Breath” with Cassadee and Terry, look and sound luminous, and gush about her recent engagement. Does it get any better than Kelly? I think not.

Cassadee sang “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons for her “bring back” song and brought back Melanie Martinez, Liz Davis, and De’borah. It was great to see Melanie and De’borah again, and everyone sounded great on the song, which is just one gem on Imagine Dragons’ incredible album. If you like the song, get the album. You won’t be disappointed.

Peter Frampton joined Terry on “Baby I Love Your Way,” which had to be a huge moment for the rocker.

Nicholas brought back Trevin Hunte, Dez, and Amanda for his “bring back” track — the artists he felt he connected with the most during the season. They joined him to sing “End of the Road’ by Boys II Men, which made hilarious use of Nick’s soulful speaking voice.

Cassadee got to sing with her hero, however dubious a choice that is, Avril Lavigne. The two sang “I’m With You”. While it was probably a shining moment in Cassadee’s life and career, I just can’t behind someone claiming Avril as their biggest hero. Sorry, can’t.

The final performance by the original coaches was really sweet. They sang Green Day’s “Time Of Your Life,” a song that was also played at my sixth grade graduation, in case you were wondering. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of chemistry Adam and Blake have with Usher and Shakira — I worry it won’t come close to what these four bring to the table together.

The Results

Before anyone was told they hadn’t won, Saint Cee Lo Green and Christina Milian announced that each of the finalists would be receiving a brand-new Kia car! “Holy buckets,” Nick exclaimed. I didn’t disagree.

After a long night of truly excellent music, it was time for the winner to be crowned. With just six minutes to go before the show ended, Carson Daly finally gathered the finalists to reveal the results. After some obligatory questions about how each felt in that moment and final words from the coaches, Carson first revealed the artist in third place: Nick.

With it between Terry and Cassadee, and Carson drawing out the suspense as much as possible, he finally announced that Cassadee was the winner! “I’m feeling amazing,” she said right after. As she should.

Well, fans of The Voice, we’re nearing the finish line! With the beginning of the end tonight, Cassadee Pope, Nicholas David, and Terry McDermott each took the stage three times to sing their hearts out: once with their signature song from the season, once with their coach, and once with a new song to prove just what they have to offer. By the end of the night, one thing was incredibly clear: This is the season of Cassadee Pope!

Before we can get into each artist’s performances, we’ve got to address the lovely Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tribute that the show opened with. Coaches Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and Cee Lo Green were joined by this season’s finalists and hosts Carson Daly and Christina Milian for a touching performance of Leonard Cohen‘s “Hallelujah”. I cried. I’m sure you did too.

Nicholas David

For his new number, tonight, Nick performed a medley of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire”. The medley was a lot of fun, but I’m not sure it was the best thing to win all of America over.

For his signature song, Nick returned to earlier “Lean On Me” performance. He sounded great, sitting at the piano. Cee Lo got very wistful during his critique of the performances, talking about how Nick moves him so deeply. Hopefully, for Nick’s sake, America feels the same way.

He and Cee Lo performed “Play That Funky Music” which was a pretty funny and solid song choice. The decision to have that little-boy version of Cee Lo come out and dance was hysterical. Kid could really move it! It was a really fun performance

Cassadee Pope

For her signature song, Cassadee made the only choice possible — “Over You”. In light of Sandy Hook, this song holds so much more weight. Cassadee, of course, knocked it out of the park. It’s as if this song was written specifically for her to song, she’s that good at it.

Cassadee and Blake sang “Steve McQueen” together. Cassadee sounded a little wonky in the beginning, as if she was struggling to find the notes. It wasn’t my favorite performance of her’s tonight, so luckily it wasn’t the only one.

For her final performance, which was also the final song of the night, she sang “Cry” by Faith Hill. Her transformation into country artist has been completed! Cassadee really sang the heck out of this song. It was wise that she went heavily country tonight — she’s found the spot where she truly, truly shines. Can anyone beat her?

Terry McDermott

Terry and Blake sang “Dude Looks Like A Lady,” while joined on guitar by Adam wearing a ridiculous long wig and no shirt. Oh Adam, never change. It was quite a fun performance.

“Broken Wings” by Mister Mister was Terry’s new song and also his son’s favorite song. Terry really owned on this song. It was certainly in his wheelhouse. While Adam was right that there was a clear fumble in the beginning, he recovered wonderfully. Terry is so consistent, but I worry that he stands no chance at overcoming Cassadee.

“I Wanna Know What Love Is” was Terry’s signature performance. This was really one of his best performances of the season, so it was wonderful to see him sing it again.

The top four of season three of The Voice took the stage for the last time together tonight before one unlucky artist was sent packing. But between Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott, Nicholas David, and Trevin Hunte, did the right person go home?

The Music

Terry and Cassadee performed “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, and it was a really great opening performance. Terry’s voice sounded like it was made especially to sing this song. Cassadee didn’t get much opportunity to show off until the very end, which was a shame.

Season two’s Juliet Simms stopped by to perform her new single “Wild Child”. I’ll admit that I didn’t watch season two, so I wasn’t familiar with Juliet. I was not expecting that voice to come out of that girl. The song was a pretty rollicking good time. I might make an iTunes purchase of it later tonight!

Another visit from a season two finalist, RaeLynn. She performed her new single “Boyfriend”. I wasn’t into this as much as I was Juliet. Maybe you were?

The final visitor from season two, Chris Mann, stopped by to belt out “Roads,” his new ballad. It was a perfectly fine performance, if a bit bland.

Nicholas and Trevin joined forces on Mariah Carey‘s “Hero,” which was such an odd song choice. The way each had to sing in a different octave was awkward, with the lower notes proving too low for Nick. There were moments where his voice just dropped out all together. Not a shining moment for a duo with one half who was about to be eliminated. Maybe nerves mucked it up?

The Results

–The first artist safe: Terry. Unless something insanely shocking happened and Cassadee was sent packing, Trevin or Nicholas had to be nervous at this point.

–The second artist safe: Cassadee. See?

–The final artist safe: Nicholas, meaning tonight is the end of the road for Trevin. This outcome felt pretty expected. For me, it came down to either Terry or Trevin to go home, and once Terry was saved first, I’d already prepared to see Trevin go.

It’ll be interesting to see what Trevin is able to do in the future. His voice didn’t always work with contemporary music that someone of his age would need to make to be successful, commercially. Hopefully coach Cee Lo Green can mentor him further and find the perfect spot for him in today’s music landscape.

As The Voice inches closer to its finale, the top four were sent to their hometowns for touching family visits before they took the stage to give it all they’ve got. It was their last chance to wow America before the finale. While it’s obvious that Cassadee Pope will be making it to the top three next week, the identities of the two gentlemen who will be joining her is less clear.

Trevin Hunte

Trevin Hunte fought tonight with “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler. He dedicated his performance to the kids at his middle school, which is somehow in Georgia and not New York as I felt we’d been led to believe all season long. Earlier in the day, I’d written that Trevin needed to stick closely to the power ballads if he hoped to advance past the top four. Clearly, his coach Cee Lo Green had the same idea. Trevin sang this song like his life depended on it — will it be enough to earn himself a spot in the top three? We’ll see.

Nicholas David

Quirkmaster Nicholas David went home to Minnesota to see his new home for the first time and to spend time with his family before hitting the stage tonight. He had a really heartwarming homecoming at the Mall of America, where the mayor gave him a Golden Microphone. Nick hit the stage to sing Joe Cocker‘s “You Are So Beautiful,” which he dedicated to his family. Watching him sing to his wife and kids in the audience was a bit of a tearjerker, I won’t lie. He took the emotion of the moment and powered it into a masterful performance, rather than allowing the emotion to overpower him. It was a really standout moment.

A Mini-Reunion

Blake Shelton brought his entire season three team back together to sing “White Christmas” for his new holiday album, which they took the stage to perform live, as well. So many faces I’d already completely forgotten about! I chuckled when I noticed that 2Steel Girls, that mother-daughter country duo that was eliminated early, was made to share one microphone. One final indignity.

Cassadee Pope

On Cassadee’s trip home to West Palm Beach, FL, she visited a local radio station and received a key to the city while she performed “Torn,” her blind audition song, for her local fans. Blake handpicked the song “Stupid Boy” by Keith Urban for tonight’s performance — a particularly shrewd idea, returning to the country genre that Cassadee surprisingly shined in earlier in the season. Blake explained that he chooses country music for her because she has an ability to connect with an emotional lyric like no one else. I think that’s a wild stretch, but she sounded great nonetheless. Is there anyone actually worried she won’t be in the finale?

Terry McDermott

Terry McDermott visited his adopted home of New Orleans to surprise his son, who didn’t know he’d be coming. I’m not sure how much I believe it considering a camera was already in the house — what did they tell him the camera was there for? The better surprise was Terry’s aunt and uncle who flew in from Scotland. Terry’s shock and joy upon seeing them at that bar was really sweet. For his performance, he took on The Beatles’ “Let It Be”. I’d hoped that he’d try something a little funkier tonight, but there’s no denying that Terry completely wowed on the song. It’ll be interesting which one of these four is sent home tomorrow night.

There are only two weeks left in this season of The Voice, so it’s time for the final four to pull out all the stops and really wow America if they hope to be one of the two who will advance to the finale, airing Monday, Dec. 17! Frontrunner Cassadee Pope and the competitors nipping at her heels, Trevin Hunte, Nicholas David, and Terry McDermott, all have their considerable strengths which they need to play to tonight. I’ve brainstormed the perfect song for each of them to sing if they hope to advance!

Cassadee Pope: “Don’t Speak” — No Doubt

At this point, Cassadee could stand up on stage and yodel and she’d probably advance to the finale — she’s that well-loved. But the pop-rocker shouldn’t rest on her laurels because there are three men just dying to knock her out of the competition. So, tonight it would be great to see her sing something that fits into her wheelhouse, but has a little depth. This No Doubt classic would do just the trick.

Trevin Hunte: “So Emotional” — Whitney Houston

Trevin’s been a complicated contestant this season. He seems only to be able to truly shine when he’s singing the crap out of a power ballad, so if he wants to make it to the top two, he better not try anything too adventurous. This classic Whitney Houston track is one that Trevin could totally belt out to the rafters.

Nicholas David: “Sir Duke” — Stevie Wonder

Nicholas’ unique voice is so perfectly suited for something a little funky, a little groovy — what’s funkier or groovy-er than an early Stevie Wonder song? It would be great to see what Nick could do with this song. I think an especially spirited performance of something like this would carry him right into the top two.

Terry McDermott: “You Shook Me All Night Long” — AC/DC

There isn’t anything that Terry should ever sing except for rock, so why not go big with one of the biggest rock bands of all time? This classic AC/DC track would match Terry’s sensibilities and abilities perfectly. Plus, it’s a really fun song — something that’s sometimes lacking from Terry’s song choices.

Tonight, six will become four on The Voice, as America’s vote will send home two more superstar hopefuls. While recent weeks have had their share of shocking eliminations, (Bryan Keith, we hardly knew ye!) the four finalists who deserve to make this week’s cut are crystal clear in my mind!

1. Cassadee Pope

At this point, Cassadee Pope, 23, seems to have this thing pretty much in the bag. The pop-rocker came to the show with a built-in fan base, having previously sung as the lead vocalist for pop-punk band Hey Monday. While the fairness of allowing an established singer into the competition is certainly up for debate, there’s no denying the reality of Cassadee’s frontrunner status. Sure, her song choices are often safe and lacking in any adventurous spirit, but the West Palm Beach, FL native knows what she’s superb at and delivers in spades every. single. time.

Cassadee’s Best Performance To Date: “Over You”

2. Amanda Brown

Amanda Brown may be lacking in Cassadee’s built-in fan base, but her spirited performances have earned her a sizable amount of acclaim since she first appeared in her blind audition. The former backup singer (for both Adele and Alicia Keys!) has approached the competition with zeal — she’s never done the same thing two weeks in a row, always showcasing another side to her powerhouse voice. From Aerosmith to Florence and the Machine to her old boss Adele, Amanda has proved she can do it all — and do it exceptionally well.

3. Nicholas David

Nicholas David is a paradox of a competitor to me. On one hand, I’m shocked he’s made it as far as he has because I never imagined America accepting his quirky look and personality as readily as they have. But on the other, with a voice that good, they’d be fools not to. I don’t know how commercial or radio-friendly a Nicholas David album would be, but after his hauntingly beautiful performance of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” last night, I know I want him to have the chance to give it a shot.

Nicholas’ Best Performance To Date: “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”

4. Trevin Hunte

Deciding on this last spot was difficult. Of the three left to choose from, they all have their positives and negatives. There’s Scot rocker Terry McDermott, who can sing the heck out of any classic rock song sent his way, but has shown no real versatility or current radio appeal. There’s cutie Melanie Martinez, who brings such a unique spin to every song she tackles, but has such a limited range as a singer. And then there’s Trevin Hunte. The 18-year-old belts out a power ballad like it’s nobody’s business, but he’s struggled to connect to any sort of current and upbeat material. Ultimately, I think Trevin shows the most potential of the three, but any of the three could snag that final spot.
