Hockey has returned! After nearly 4 months of negotiations, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association spent 16 hours bargaining and decided to end the stalemate on Jan. 6. Hooray!  The two sides announced they had come to a preliminary settlement on a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement, and had they not reached this agreement, the NHL would have been cancelled on Jan. 11. Both fans and celebrities like Justin Bieber have taken to Twitter to express their excitement — read on for all the details!

Justin’s Reaction

Canadian native Justin could not contain his excitement, as he wrote “HOCKEY IS BACK!!” while the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper  – who Justin recently met — said “Glad to see a deal between the #NHL players and the league. Great news for hockey fans and communities across Canada.” Justin has proved his love for hockey time and time again, and he recently got a new tattoo to show his dedication to the sport!

Many TV stars were happy about the return of hockey, as Bones star David Boreanaz wrote “So excited that @NHL is back!,” while Go On star Matthew Perry tweeted “The NHL and Go On are back this week! All is right in the world.#GoOn.” Wizards of Waverly Place star David Henrie said “Hockey… It’s about freaking time!!!! So glad I can finally say this again, Go Kings Go! #hashtagWewantcup2.”

Columbus Blue Jackets player Jack Johnson ‏said, “We’re back! And I thought Team USA winning the gold was the best news. Can’t wait to go to Columbus and start the NHL season!” Country star Carrie Underwood, who is married to the Nashville Predators player Mike Fisher tweeted “Well, folks, hockey is back! Very bittersweet…I just lost my purse holder but gained cheering on my hot husband as he kicks butt!”

He was an up-and-coming all-star player who many said was destined for greatness.

Police have found New York Rangers left wing Derek Boogaard, 28, dead in his Minneapolis, Minnesota apartment on May 13.According to the Daily News, the scene is under intense investigation by the medical examiner’s office.

As of right now, medical officials don’t suspect foul play was involved. But they’re waiting for final autopsy results to determine the cause of his death.

Hailing from the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Derek recently signed a four-year only contract with the Rangers. Though he only played 22 games for the New York team, sports aficionados say he was destined for long-term success with the NHL. His tenure came to an early halt during a game fight on Dec. 9, which left him with a concussion which never healed enough to let him return to the ice.

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Derek’s family!
