Mick Fanning (born Michael Eugene Fanning on June 13, 1981 in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian professional surfer and triple world champion. Born to Irish parents, Mick learned to surf at age 5. He attended Palm Beach Currumbin State High School with fellow professional surfer, Joel Parkinson. Mick won his claim to fame in 1996 when he placed in the top three at the Australian National Titles. In 2001 and 2002, he continued his winning streak in a couple competitions, including earning a slot on the 2002 tour as the World Qualifying Series’ Champion. In 2004, he suffered a hamstring tear and had to have surgery to repair it — however, he made a full comeback and scored many more victories, including winning the 2007, 2009 and 2013 ASP World Tours. In the final of the 2015 J-Bay Open against Julian Wilson, Mick was attacked by a shark but was unharmed, and the event was cancelled.

Mick is married to former swimsuit model, Karissa Dalton. Mick had a personal tragedy strike him in 1998 when his brother Sean tragically died in a car accident along with fellow surfer Joel Green.
