Bio:
Mario Gutierrez (born in Veracruz, Mexico in 1987) is a thoroughbred horse racing jockey. Mario, whose father was also a jockey, starting riding Quarter Horses in El Higo, Veracruz, when he was only 14. He moved to Canada in 2006 to continue his training, riding at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was a great move for Mario as his career took off winning riding titles in 2007 and 2008. He has achieved great success including winning the 2016 Kentucky Derby riding Nyquist who is owned by J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill. Prior to that he had tremendous success in 2012 winning his first Kentucky Derby as well as the Preakness Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby aboard I’ll Have Another.
Best Known For:
Mario is best known for his two Kentucky Derby victories aboard I’ll Have Another in 2012 and Nyquist in 2016.
Personal Life:
Mario reunited with an childhood friend named Rebecca when he arrived in Vancouver in 2006. The two hit it off and soon got married.
