The District Attorney’s office began putting up stickers in storefront windows in Brooklyn today, August 16, to let children know that these places are safe spots where they can go in case of an emergency.

This Safe Stop program was launched following the kidnapping and murder of 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky, from Borough Park, who got lost trying to meet up with his mother after leaving day camp in mid-July. His kidnapper, Levi Aron, snatched him and took him back to his apartment, where he tragically killed him.

Business owners and employees underwent voluntary background checks to ensure their place of business could be considered a safe spot for Brooklyn kids. They were then given Safe Haven decals to stick on their storefront windows to let children know it was a safe place for them to stop in, in case they had an emergency of some sorts.

“It’s a good thing to do, it’s a good thing for the community, and it’s a good step for Brooklyn” says John Miniaci the owner of Johnny’s Pizza, which is now considered a safe haven in Sunset Park.

Although the program has been in the works for years, Leiby’s death led the District Attorney Charles Hynes to fast-forward the project.

“The message to children in New York is that if you’re lost, or if you feel like you’re in trouble, or if you feel like there might be some danger, or if you’re injured, just look look for the yellow Safe Haven sticker,” City Councilman David G. Greenfield said on July 20. What do you think of this program?

The ‘Butcher of Brooklyn’ has given his first interview since he was arrested and charged with murdering the 8-year-old on July 11.

In the hour-long chat at New York’s Riker’s Island Prison, Levi Aron described the moment he first set eyes on lost Leiby Kletzky, claiming, “He looked familiar. I thought I knew him,” but he refused to describe how he killed and dismembered his victim, insisting, “I (only) remember little things.”

“It hurts too much to think about it,” Aron, 35, told the New York Daily News.

“I don’t know what happened. I just panicked.”

When asked of he wanted to apologize for 8-year-old Leiby’s murder, Aron looked away and silently nodded his head, but refused to say “sorry.”

He also refused to refer to Leiby by name and described the kidnapping, murder and dismemberment as “the incident.”

When asked what he did and WHY he did it, Aron answered “I don’t know”

Aron was adamant his motives weren’t sexual. There was no evidence of molestation and he stressed in his interview with the Daily News that he and Leiby slept in separate rooms, the night before the murder.

The accused killer also addressed his lawyer’s claims he is suffering a psychiatric condition, claiming, “I sometimes hear voices.”

Bizarrely, when asked if he wishes he never met Leiby, he replied, “Sometimes.”

This must be heartbreaking for Leiby’s grieving family.

The accused killer’s lawyers are now trying to get the trial moved and are STILL considering using his ‘insanity’ as a defense.

Levi Aron has been told he WILL stand trial on charges he kidnapped, murdered and dismembered Leiby Kletzky after the 8-year-old got lost on his way home from a summer camp on July 11.

Aron confessed to cops after body parts were found in his freezer and a dumpster near his Brooklyn, New York home — but pleaded NOT GUILTY, pending a psychiatric test to establish if he was competent to stand trial.

The results of that test were announced in court on August 4 — and the trial WILL go ahead.

Aron, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, remained silent throughout the hearing — which was attended by members of Leiby’s hasidic jewish community.

Speaking outside court, his lawyers revealed they’re still convinced the accused killer is suffering from a psychiatric condition — and will request further testing and evaluation.

Attorney Pierre Bazile told reporters, “It is not a rendering on sanity or insanity. We believe him to have some psychiatric disorders.”

Aron is due back in court on September 19, when Bazile will ask for the trial to be moved away from Brooklyn — claiming he has no chance of being judged fairly there.

He explains, “He may not be able to get a fair trial in Brooklyn because the community’s rancor has been riled, it has been so stirred up against the defendant.”

Let’s hope justice is found for poor little Leiby.

A grand jury on Wednesday (July 20) indicted the 35-year-old on a total of eight counts in the murder of the 8-year-old Brooklyn boy.

Leiby Kletzky was found dead last week, two days after he went missing on his way home from a Orthodox Jewish day camp near his home in Brooklyn, New York. Yesterday, an autopsy of his body revealed that Levi Aron had given Leiby a deadly combination of drugs, including a muscle relaxant, an anti-psychotic drug and two pain medications, before smothering him to death.

Aron has been indicted on a total of eight counts — two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count of second-degree kidnapping. He faces the maximum penalty of life in prison without parole.

He previously pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on July 14 and was sent for psychiatric evaluation after his attorney claimed he’d been hearing voices.

Prosecutors say Aron confessed to kidnapping and killing Leiby, hiding body parts in his freezer and a nearby dumpster. In leaked excerpts from his confession, Aron said, “I’m sorry for the hurt that I caused.”

Leiby’s family fear Esther Kletzky can’t handle the horrific truth about how her eight-year-old son was kidnapped, murdered and his body dismembered.

The woman who knows him best says he is a ‘cold sociopath’ whose ‘soul is doomed forever!’

Levi Aron has gained national infamy for allegedly murdering 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky, but his ex-wife says he deserves whatever punishment he has coming to him!

Levi, 35, divorced Diana Diunov, 38, in 2005, but she’s not afraid to comment on his state of mind, the New York Post reports.

“[He is a] cold sociopath,” she said. “His soul is doomed forever. Trust me, this man is sane!”

She also chillingly says her ex-husband modeled himself after another notorious accused killer: Casey Anthony.

“He killed an innocent child for no reason but a desire to become famous,” she says. “After the big case of Casey Anthony, he decided to try his luck. For him, the meeting of this little poor boy was a chance to shine into media and make himself known. He probably believes that he can get off by work of lawyers and God knows who else.”
