Lauren Scruggs: How I’ve Learned To Date After Losing My Arm

While recovering from her horrific accident, Lauren has opened up about she’s adjusting to dating and having a love life. She’s such an inspiration!

After the horrific accident last December that resulted in the tragic loss of her left eye and left hand, fashion-blogger Lauren Scruggs sat down with Katie Couric on Tuesday, Nov. 20 to discuss how she’s adjusted — and how she’s learning to date again.

Lauren, 24, revealed that she was dating someone at the time of the accident, but she’s had fears about being found attractive again. “I was dating a guy for a while before and a little after the accident, so yeah I kind of thought ‘How is a guy going to ever like me?’ but I’ve had guy[s] interested since then,” Lauren said. She then laughed and said, “So that’s a positive thing too.”

It’s great to hear that Lauren is adjusting so well!

Lauren Scruggs was severely injured in a horrific plane propeller accident last December. After numerous surgeries, three weeks in the hospital and several months of rehabilitation, the brave 24-year-old has finally come to terms with her new lifestyle.

When Lauren Scruggs boarded a friend’s tiny two-seater plane last December to check out her town’s Christmas lights, she had no idea that her life was about to change forever. After a short flight around the Dallas area, Lauren accidentally walked into the spinning propeller while she was exiting the plane. The blade sliced her head, face, shoulder and severed her hand.

Three Weeks in the Hospital

After three weeks in the hospital and surgeries on her brain, face, shoulder and hand — and eventually, the removal of her left eye — Lauren returned home to her family. Though she felt lucky to be alive after such a horrific ordeal, Lauren says that she had a hard time adjusting to her new body.

Lauren ‘Just Wanted [Her] Hand Back’

“I went through a period of anger after I was getting off my pain medication — then reality hits you,” the 24-year-old fashion blogger tells People. “I just wanted my hand back. I went through the process of grieving and I still am today. My doctor told me that losing your hand is like losing someone in your family. Because it’s a part of you.”

After nearly three hours of rehab per day, Lauren relearned how to complete ordinary tasks, like tying her shoe, without the aid of of left hand. “I took a driving test and got a new license,” she revealed. “It’s been easy to drive with one hand, and I use my knee.”

It Was Hard To Look in the Mirror

Still, Lauren admits that she had difficulty accepting the change in her appearance. “Right when I got home from the hospital, I would cry a lot. It was hard to look at myself in the mirror. It was just so shocking.”

Several months after the accident, Lauren was fitted for a prosthetic eye and several new arms (one for working out, one to swim and one that looks lifelike). Today, she’s able to challenge herself physically — and even paint her fingernails.

The Good That Came After the Accident

“My accident was bad, but I think it’s deepened me as a person and increased my compassion for people and intensified my joy,” she confesses. “It’s kind of weird to say, but I wouldn’t trade it. I feel blessed. I’ve been through a lot but I’m living. This is my new normal.”

Lauren plans to talk about her accident and more in an upcoming book Still Lolo.

Lauren Scruggs, fashion blogger and model, spoke with The Today Show‘s Savannah Guthrie on Aug. 9 from London’s Olympic Village where she appeared to be in high spirits since her devastating accident.

The 24-year-old Texas beauty told Savannah she’s happy, feeling good, happy to be off her pain medications and that she’s learning to ”live by faith and not by sight.”

Lauren made headlines around the world when she walked into the propeller of a two seater airplane on Dec. 3 in Texas — causing her to lose her left hand and eye.

Lauren bravely opened up about that tragic day.

“I remember my feet touching the ground, getting out of the plane,” she said. “That’s all I remember.”

Lauren went on to say that she still has “difficult” days, but she’s learning to accept the loss of her eye and hand.

And when Savannah asked Lauren who her favorite Olympian is, she didn’t hesitate to reply “Gabby Douglas.” Then low and behold, Gabby appeared and gave her a big hug.

“Keep staying strong,” Gabby told her. “Keep smiling.”

Lauren Scruggs Getting Prosthetic Arm After Horrific Accident

Lauren’s parents stopped by ‘Good Morning America’ to give an update on their daughter’s recovery.

Lauren Scruggs‘ story is nothing short of a miracle. Four months after accidentally walking into an airplane propeller, losing both her left eye and hand, the fashion blogger has made a remarkable recovery. Not only has she regained her speech and personality — two things doctors feared she might lose forever — but her parents revealed April 6 on Good Morning America that she will soon be getting a prosthetic arm.

“She’s already selected that,” Lauren’s dad Jeff Scruggs said. “It’ll be another month before she gets it.”

As always, Lauren’s family attributes their faith to their daughter’s recovery process.

“She’s concentrating on her rehabilitation, and she knows that God is carrying her,” Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs said. ”Because of Him, she has the strength and courage to get up every day and do what she’s supposed to do. … Our faith is such an important part of our life. It was the same hope that restored our marriage 12 years ago and healed Lauren.

The Scruggs also said Lauren’s twin sister Brittany has been a huge support system for her.

Lauren Scruggs Suing Over Plane Accident

Lauren Scruggs and her father are suing the insurance company of the plane with the propeller than cut her so severely, she lost both her arm and eye. Do YOU think they are in the right?

Lauren Scruggs is not accepting the $200,000 settlement she received from her plane accident late last year and is suing the plane’s insurance company, citing the fact she was “severely and catastrophically injured” when the plane’s blade took her eye and arm, reports RadarOnline.

According to Aggressive Insurance Services, the company is only allotted $100,000 from each of the plane’s two policies, which was “verbally offered” to Lauren as a settlement.

The lawsuit Lauren filed says “she was not in the aircraft or getting in or out of it at the time of the incident. Accordingly, Ms. Scruggs contends that she should not be limited to the one hundred thousand dollar ($100,000) per passenger sub-limits stated in the two policies.”

It’s been a long road for model Lauren Scruggs, who lost her left eye and hand in a plane propeller accident last year on December 3. But thankfully, she’s keeping a positive mindset and even tweeted a photo of herself after her prosthetic eye surgery!

Lauren Scruggs, 23, is showing the world that life goes on even after a horrific accident like hers.

“Such a fun weekend with sweet family and friends,” she tweeted on Feb. 11 with the above photo attached.

The photo was shot just a little over a week after the fashion blogger was fitted for a new eye, and as you can see, she’s looking pretty fab, don’t you think?

Lauren Scruggs Gets A New Eye

After her horrific plane propeller accident in December that demolished her left eye, Lauren’s recovery has taken a turn for the better: She’s gotten a new eye!

With her family by her side, Lauren Scruggs, 23, underwent an all-day process to get a prosthetic eye, reports People.

“She was fitted and measured. The ocularist carefully painted and shaped the new eye,” mom Cheryl Scruggs wrote on her daughter’s website Caring Bridge on Feb. 2. “By 5 p.m., it was done, and her new eye was in place. It is beautiful. Thank you God for providing.”

With the fashion blogger‘s new eye in place, mom hinted she might even get a prosthetic arm.

“We again met with the arm people this week,” Cheryl added. “Again, another step. bittersweet…”

She continued: “Lo’s physical pain has subsided a great deal. It is now the emotional pain that is the tough one. Please continue to pray. Your prayers are so appreciated … More than you know.”

Model Lauren Scruggs Has 'Toughest' Week Of Recovery Yet

Since being released from the hospital after walking into an airplane propeller, Lauren Scruggs’s recovery has not been an easy one

Even though it’s been two months since Lauren Scruggs walked into a plane propeller and lost her arm and eye, this last week was the most difficult for the 23-year-old model so far, her mom writes on her blog.

“We chalked up this past week as one of the toughest yet,” Cheryl says. “You would think that things would be on the upswing, huh? They are in some ways. She is progressing well, physically, but we have now entered into working through the 5 stages of grief. We have experienced a little of this along this journey, but we now face it head on. Hard? um excruciating”

She adds, “It’s healthy, yes. It’s necessary, yes. But it’s brutal.”

Lauren was on a joy ride on a tiny plane in Texas, when she exited the plane and accidentally walked into the whirling propeller. She was released from the hospital a little more than a week ago.

“I feel like such a debbie-downer; not being my upbeat, positive self, And I find it hard to write and put on paper what we are really experiencing, Have two months really gone by? Did Christmas really come and go? Is it really 2012?” Cheryl asks.

“Hard to believe it’s been 2 months since it all happened; sometimes it feels like a day; sometimes it feels like 5 years.”
