Bio:
Julian Bond (born Horace Julian Bond on Jan. 14, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee) was an American social activist, politician and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. While attending Morehouse College, he helped co-found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960, where he organized civil rights and voter registration drives. In 1965, he was one of eleven African Americans elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, where he was elected to four terms. He was also elected to six terms in the Georgia Senate. He helped found the Southern Poverty Law Center, and served as the law firm’s first president from 1971 to 1979. In 1998, Julian was selected as chairman of the NAACP, holding the position until 2009. Julian actively advocated for LGBT rights and minority groups that faced discrimination.

Personal Life:
Julian married Alice Clopton in 1961, and they divorced in 1989. They had five children, Phyllis, Horace, Michael, Jeffrey and Julia. He married Pamela S. Horowitz, a former SPLC attorney, in 1991.
