Jay Leno Congratulates Jimmy Fallon After Being Replaced

After over 20 years of service as the host of ‘The Tonight Show,’ Jay showed last night, Apr. 3, that he had no hard feelings about being replaced. Read on to see what he said in his funny monologue!

Jay Leno is handling being replaced by Jimmy Fallon admirably. On Apr. 3, in his first show since the announcement that Jimmy would be taking over The Tonight Show in 2014, Jay was a good sport, congratulating his successor and making jokes like always.

Jay Leno Humorously Congratulates Jimmy Fallon

Jay began his monologue with a sincere congratulations to Jimmy, but it didn’t take too long for the longtime late night host to get cynical and humorous. “I just have one request of Jimmy,” Jay said. “We’ve all fought, kicked, and scratched to get this network up to fifth place, okay? Now we have to keep it there. Jimmy, don’t let it slip into sixth. We’re counting on you.”

He continued, adding another joke that jabbed NBC: “Jimmy hasn’t even taken over yet and the rumors have already started. NBC says in five years they plan to replace Jimmy with Justin Bieber.”

David Letterman & Jimmy Kimmel On The Late Night Shake-Up

Over on CBS, Jay’s longtime late night rival David Letterman used the big news for material in his own monologue. “I got a call from my mom today, (and) she says, ‘Well, David, I see you didn’t get the ‘Tonight Show’ again.” David bolted for CBS when Jay was chosen as Johnny Carson’s successor to The Tonight Show in 1992.

David also noted that he was feeling a bit of deja vu, referring to NBC’s failed experiment to replace Jay with Conan O’Brien in 2009: “He’s being replaced by a younger late night talk show host – what could possibly go wrong? Honestly. They had pretty good luck with this in the past.”

And Jimmy Kimmel, ABC’s late night host, also added a funny congratulations to Jimmy of his own via Twitter. “Congratulations to my dear, sweet @jimmyfallon – a formidable rival and an incredible lover.”

It will be exciting to see where the late night cards fall as Jay looks for a new gig and Jimmy gets comfortable in his new role. One thing is sure — these guys love making jokes about each other!

Jimmy has sealed the deal to move from ‘Late Night’ to ‘The Tonight Show’ in Spring 2014, according to our sister site Deadline.

Jimmy Fallon will be taking over Jay Leno‘s 11:35 p.m. Tonight Show time slot after all, NBC confirms! Jimmy has closed a deal with NBC to take over late-night hosting duties. Read on for all the details, and to watch the hilarious video of Jay and Jimmy singing.

Jimmy Fallon Signs Deal To Take Over ‘The Tonight Show’

Jimmy, 38, has signed with NBC to take over from Jay, 62.

NBC released a statement, which our sister site Deadline reported:

Jay Leno, longtime host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” announced today that he will wrap up what will be 22 years of headlining the iconic late-night show in Spring 2014. NBC also announced today that Jimmy Fallon, now host of NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” will transition into new hosting duties on “The Tonight Show” franchise after Leno concludes his successful run.

As part of the transition, “The Tonight Show” will be returning to its original home in 30 Rock in New York and will be executive-produced by Emmy Award winner Lorne Michaels (“Saturday Night Live,” “30 Rock”).

Programming plans for the 12:35 a.m. (ET) time period currently are in development and will be announced soon.

“Jay Leno is an entertainment icon, making millions of people laugh every weeknight for more than 20 years,” Steve Burke, Chief Executive Officer of NBCUniversal, said. “His long reign as the highest-rated late-night host is a testament to his work ethic and dedication to his viewers and to NBC. We are purposefully making this change when Jay is #1, just as Jay replaced Johnny Carson when he was #1. Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is his time. I’m thrilled he will become the sixth host of ‘The Tonight Show’ at exactly the right moment, in conjunction with our coverage of next year’s Winter Olympic Games from Sochi, Russia. I also want to congratulate and thank Debbie Vickers and her ‘Tonight Show’ team for producing an entertaining, first-class show every night for the past two decades. Debbie’s role in the creative and popular success of this franchise cannot be overstated.”

Jay Leno Congratulates Jimmy Fallon

Jay said, “Congratulations Jimmy. I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.”

Jimmy responded, “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”

With rumors heating up that NBC is planning on replacing Jay Leno, HollywoodLife reports EXCLUSIVELY that FOX is waiting in the wings to give him a new late night show! Read on to find out the name of the show!

Reportedly, Jimmy Fallon may be replacing Jay Leno in the 11:35 PM time slot soon, but he shouldn’t worry — it looks like he won’t have to wait long to get a new job.

Jay Leno: FOX Will Offer Him A Show

A source tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively that ”FOX is 100% going to offer Jay Leno a late night spot if NBC decides to get rid of him.” Wow — how’s that for job security?

The source also tells us that FOX is really looking forward even though Jay hasn’t officially been let go — they’re already brainstorming show names! ”Some names thrown around for the show are, ‘Leno,’ ‘The Other Show with Jay Leno’ or ‘Jay’. Those are the names that have been thrown around,” the source says. Hmm, sounds like FOX is ripping off Jay’s other former replacement Conan O’Brien – his TBS late night show is simply named Conan.

Jay Leno: Will FOX’s Interest Make NBC Hang Onto Him?

But FOX shouldn’t get too ahead of themselves — as we also exclusively reported on Mar. 6, NBC is still hesitant to pull the trigger and promote Jimmy Fallon. “NBC is scared if they do it, they think that Jay would go elsewhere,” our source tells HollywoodLife. Now we’ve learned FOX is just waiting to take Jay off their hands.

Nevertheless, NBC is most concerned with competing against Jimmy Kimmel, who recently moved to the 11:30 time slot on ABC. Since the move, even less young people have been watching Jay — the percentage of young viewers watching the Tonight Show has declined by over ten percent since going head-to-head with Jimmy, according to a New York Post report. NBC will be more concerned about remedying that situation than losing Jay Leno.

Sources tell HollywoodLife.com that: “Jay Leno would be pursued immediately if he left NBC and a contract would be given to him from FOX. All he would have to do is say ‘Yes’ because Fox would be extremely interested.”

Jay, who is signed with NBC through 2014, may keep his job because, as another source told HollywoodLife.com, he has other outlets if a change occurs. Next season may be the last for Jay Leno in the ‘Tonight Show’ spot, according to a new report. Is Jimmy Fallon a suitable replacement?

Jimmy Fallon may become the new host of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 2014. Of course, if this does happen, as a new report suggests it may, the title would be probably be shifted to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

NBC is is denying the move, but industry sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that NBC is eyeing to make an announcement in May, noting that the 2013-2014 season will be Jay Leno’s last. Jimmy Fallon would allegedly make a soft launch into the 11:35 PM time slot during the summer of 2014 before a formal premiere in the fall.

A Leno rep tells The Hollywood Reporter, “We do not speculate on rumor.”

Leno is currently signed through 2014.

Source say the network would bring in Jimmy Fallon due to the competition on ABC. The competing network moved Jimmy Kimmel into the 11:35 PM slot in January.

“The more time Jimmy Kimmel is in that slot, the more the young audience goes that way, the harder it is for Jimmy [Fallon] to keep that audience,” says a source.

Furthermore, if David Letterman decides to retire after his contract is up in 2014, NBC may be afraid that CBS will try to court Jimmy Fallon to replace David. Sources add that it’d be in NBC’s best interest to make the move now and announce Jay’s departure as well as Jimmy as his replacement.

Jimmy Fallon and Michelle presented a series of hot dance moves with the ”Evolution of Mom Dancing,” starting with the “Go Shopping, Get Groceries” dance, and following with the “Just The Hands Part of Single Ladies,” the “Oh My God, I Love This Song” and the “Driving the Station Wagon.”

“You’re a good dancer,” Jimmy told Michelle. “I am pretty good,” she admitted.

“How about Barack, is he a good dancer?” Jimmy asked.

“You know, I give him a B,” Michelle said. “His dancing is right here in the pocket. He’s got like three good moves. But they’re all right here,” Michelle said, imitating him by dancing with her hands by her hips.

Afterwards, Michelle told Jimmy, “that was so much fun. You’re a beautiful mom. Pretty hot.”

We have to agree. Jimmy does look hot as a mom. But more importantly, Michelle is a GREAT dancer!
