JetBlue pilot Clayton Osbon did the unthinkable, when he had a mental breakdown and threatened to crash the plane he was captaining March 27 and now the 49-year-old veteran pilot is facing 20 years in prison and a hefty fine, reports RadarOnline.

Osbon is being charged for interfering with a flight crew after he had a panic attack, started pounding on the lavatory door when a female passenger was inside, then started screaming about 9/11, al Queda and more. He was eventually tackled by several passengers, who held him down until the co-pilot landed the plane in Amarillo, Texas.

“If convicted, Osbon faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine,” reports RadarOnline. “The U.S. Attorney’s office has 30 days to present the matter to a grand jury for indictment.”

Passengers on a JetBlue flight from JFK International Airport in New York City headed to Las Vegas March 27 thought they might not make it to their final destination, when their captain — a veteran named Clayton Osbon — had a mental breakdown on the plane he was piloting.

When Osbon began to have his “medical situation,” his co-pilot locked him out of the cockpit and the captain was tackled by four passengers, who held him down until they landed.

“They’re going to take us down. They’re taking us down,” he screamed. “They’re going to take us down. Say the Lord’s prayer. Say the Lord’s prayer.”

Thankfully, the co-pilot skillfully diverted the plane to Amarillo, Texas, where everyone landed safely at 10 a.m. and the captain was taken to a medical facility.

When interviewed about the incident, Osbon’s wife defended him, saying, “There are several different sides to every story. Just keep that in mind.”

We’re so thankful the co-pilot and an off-duty pilot had the situation under control — and that the passengers were brave enough to tackle the sick captain until they had landed.

Update: 3:25 p.m. ET
A ferry flight is due to arrive to Amarillo at 3:11 p.m. local time to fly customers to their originally-scheduled destination in Las Vegas.

We would like to thank our crew on board for handling this situation per their training, and we would like to thank the customers on board for following crewmember instructions.

Flight 191 departed New York’s JFK airport at 7:28 am ET (was scheduled to depart 6:55 am ET). At roughly 10 am CT/11 am ET, the pilot in command elected to divert to Amarillo, TX for a medical situation involving the Captain. Another Captain, traveling off duty, entered the flight deck prior to landing at Amarillo, and took over the duties of the ill crewmember. The aircraft arrived Amarillo at 10:11 am CT, and the crewmember was removed from the aircraft and taken to a local medical facility.

Customers have safely deplaned and we’re sending a new aircraft and crew to Amarillo to continue the flight to Las Vegas.

When Dr. Colette Vieau‘s 2-year-old daughter Natalie threw a fuss on a Boston-bound JetBlue flight from the Turks and Caicos, her mom did everything she could to calm the little one. Natalie’s parents managed to get her seat belt fastened and held in place, but the pilot and a flight attended decided they were unable to take off until the family left, according to The Daily Mail.

The parents were forced to take Natalie and their 3-year-old Cecilia off the flight.

“We weren’t belligerent, drunk, angry, screaming,” Colette says. “We were just having a hard time struggling with our children.”

After being kicked off, the family was forced to stay another night on the island because there were no more flights that day. They had to book a hotel for the night and more flights to get home, which cost them an more than $2,000.

“Flight 850 had customers that did not comply with crew member instructions for a prolonged time period,” JetBlue said in a statement. “The Captain elected to remove the customers involved for the safety of all customers and crew members on board.”
