Jared Loughner, the man who shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, killing six people in the process and injuring 13 more, was sentenced to six life sentences plus 140 more years on Nov. 8.

Diagnosed as having schizophrenia, Jared plead “guilty” in August, according to TMZ.

Gabrielle’s husband Mark Kelly addressed Jared in court today, saying, “You may have put a bullet through her head, but you have not put a dent in her spirit, and her ability to do good.” The two were present for Jared’s sentencing.

On Jan. 8, 2011 Jared opened fire in a Safeway parking lot, where Gabrielle was holding a constituents meeting. Since the shooting, Gabrielle has only regained fifty perfect of her vision, her speech is impaired, but overall she has made a remarkable recovery.

Jared will not get the death penalty.

The young girl, who is related to actress Sophia Bush and former MLB manager Dallas Green, went with a neighbor to meet the congresswoman because of her interest in politics. How horrible.

9-year-old Christina Taylor-Green had just been elected to the student council and shown an interest in politics from a young age when she accompanied a neighbor to congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords‘ “Congress on Your Corner” event on Jan. 8. While there she became one of the now six people killed, and 14 injured, in a gun rampage targeting Gabrielle.

Christina had also recently made her first communion and was involved in activities including ballet and baseball according to The Arizona Daily Star — the latter especially as her grandfather is a former New York Yankees and New York Mets manager Dallas Green. She was also the second cousin of actress Sophia Bush who tweeted, “There are no words to explain what my cousin’s family is going through in Arizona. How can this be? Violence is never the answer…”

The always patriotic Christina, who was said to have often worn red, white and blue, was born on Sept. 11, 2001 and featured in the book, Faces of Hope, that showcased one child from each state born on the historic day. “She came in on a tragedy and now she’s gone out on a tragedy, but the nine years in between were very special,” her father, John Green, told CNN.

It is still unknown what shooter Jared Loughner‘s motivation was in targeting the congresswoman and then opening fire on the crowd.

In an incredibly moving and eloquent appearance on MSNBC this morning, Christina’s mother Roxanna said, “I just want her memory to live on, she’s a face of hope, a face of change. Stop the violence, stop the hatred.”

After seeing the national tragedy that has happened in Arizona Sarah, it is time for you to acknowledge the role your actions could have possibly played!

Sarah Palin — you need to speak up now if you want to save your potential Presidential career. You need to apologize for targeting political opponents with crosshair symbols on an attack map!

The American people want debate, they want strong differing political views but they DO NOT want their political candidates and representatives made targets for assassination. Sarah- you as the virtual leader of the Tea Party movement have led the gun-slinging rhetoric, primarily against Democrats. You published a map of American Congressional districts last March on your Facebook page before the mid-term elections and you placed gun target “cross hairs” on 20 districts, targeting Democrats, who needed to be “removed ” especially because they supported health care reform. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was elected to one of those 20 targeted districts. It appears that someone  called Jared Loughner, 22,may have taken your target map and calls to arms seriously and now Giffords is fighting for her life, a respected Judge, John M. Roll, is dead, and so is a beautiful 9 year-old girl and three others.

You also exhorted your followers on twitter: “Don’t retreat! Instead – RELOAD!” Giffords’ Republican opponent in the recent Congressional race , Jesse Kelly, seems to have taken this order literally. He actually held  a rally event in which he invited supporters to shoot a machine gun. “Get on target for victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly,” on June 12, 2010, his ad for the event announced.

You have to stop your rhetoric which many believe is violence-inciting before more innocent people die and before anyone who wants a political career must wear a bulletproof vest and be surrounded by armed bodyguards at all times.You must address your supporters and order them to stand down and to use their weapons ONLY for hunting and target practice on firing ranges – not for silencing opposing political voices.

Sarah - - you have to take responsibility for raising the level of violence-inciting vitriol in this country. During your Vice- Presidential campaign you announced repeatedly that Barack Obama, ” pals around with terrorists”, eliciting someone in a Clearwater, Florida crowd, listening to you  to shout out “kill him!” Later in Pensacola, you said the same thing about Obama and a woman responded, “Get him, Sarah!”

It’s one thing to show that you can take down a caribou on your reality show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, but  it’s another to use gun lingo when addressing politicians that happen to disagree with you. This is NOT the Wild West nor the Alaskan frontier, much as you might love to live in it.

Violent words and images clearly have an impact on violence-prone individuals. We’ve seen it before – most clearly when “targeted” abortion providers were murdered. Our democracy is all about debate, but there is no place in it for physically violent and deadly disagreements.

Americans don’t want “differences” ended with assassination attacks or with acts of domestic terrorism. Sarah – President Obama has called for a moment of silence tomorrow at 11 am est. Now, it’s time to silence your political gun lingo and to commit to putting no more of your opponents in “crosshairs”!

Though still in critical condition, the politician is showing signs of improvement after being shot point blank in the head.

Doctors treating Gabrielle Giffords are optimistic today after the congresswomen showed signs of improvement following her shooting at point blnak range on Jan. 8. The Huffington Post reports, “Surgeons said a bullet went through Giffords’ head on the left side of the brain, but she is still able to respond nonverbally to commands such as squeezing a hand or showing two fingers. They credited several reasons for her survival, including good luck and the fact that paramedics got her to surgeons quickly – in under 40 minutes.”

The shooting happened outside a Tuscon Safeway where Gabrielle was holding a “Congresss on Your Corner” event to speak with local residents. Arizona’s chief federal judge and five others were killed and 14 people were injured in the shooting, committed by 22-year-old Jared Loughner. There was also a second individual spotted with Jared inside the Safeway, though police do not have a positive ID at this time.

At a press conference earlier today, Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said that greater catastrophe was avoided when one of Jared’s victims, an unnamed woman, lunged at the shooter and ripped away his second magazine clip as he went to reload. His third clip failed when there was a problem with the spring, allowing two men to subdue him and wrestle away his gun while waiting for law enforcement.

Gabrielle is married to astronaut Mike Kelly and has two children.

It is unknown if there were definite political motivations behind the shooting at this time. Gabrielle was a Democrat who was on Sarah Palin’s “target list” for her support of the health care reform bill. Sarah’s Facebook page at the time carried an actual map of the USA with gun marks on the locations of the 20 politicans she was “targeting.”

In a truly horrible story, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition after a gunman shot her at point blank range as she hosted an event in Tuscon, Ariz. NPR reports, “Giffords, who was re-elected to a third term in November, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.”

Gabrielle had just been sworn in for her third term as a representative for the state and was hosting the event, as she often does, for “constituents to present their concerns directly to her.”

Gawker spoke to someone on the scene who said, “The event was very informal: Gifford had set up a table outside the Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman, who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford in the head first, ‘point blank’.”

Of the shooter they say, “The gunman was young, mid-to-late 20s(he has now been identified as 22-year-old Jared Loughner), white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down, although he struggled at first. He was ‘not particularly well-dressed’; he didn’t look like a businessman, but more of a ‘fringe character’.”

President Obama said in a statement, “This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tucson, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. And while we are continuing to receive information, we know that some have passed away, and that Representative Giffords is gravely wounded. We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.”

Speaker of the House John Boehner issued the following statement, “I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff. An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”
