Jamar Rogers‘ days of battling on The Voice stage may be over, but his own voice is still going strong — stronger than ever, in fact. The season two finalist is preparing for the release of his debut single “High,” which officially hits iTunes on Dec. 4. But first, you can catch him Nov. 30 on Cee Lo Green‘s Christmas special, Cee Lo’s Magic Moment, along with a few felt-skinned friends he’s been waiting his whole life to meet.

HollywoodLife.com chatted with Jamar about his new music, his recent photo shoot for the NOH8 campaign — founded by Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley — and the weirdest part about working with the Muppets:

Congratulations in advance for your new single. What can you tell us about it?

It’s about my own struggles with using drugs to escape a sometimes-crappy life, then using love to replace that drug. And who can’t relate to having a bad day or a breakup? Not everybody turns to drugs, but we all have a vice. Whenever I sing it on tour, people literally cry. I’m excited to see the reaction to it.

Is that how the whole album is? Will it make us cry?

It’s electro-soul, so there’s the electronic aspect that appeals to what people like today, but I’m singing about some real things. I’m singing soul music, because I have a soulful voice, so combining the two things gives it a really fun sound. Most importantly, I want people to feel.

OK, now tell me about getting to work with Cee-Lo again. That must have been cool.

He brought some of us out to Vegas a few months ago, and it was really cool. We got to work with the Muppets, and Rob Stewart and Eric Benet were there. It was really cool of Cee Lo to bring some of us back. He’s stayed true to his word, checking in on me through text and e-mails. We’ve definitely stayed connected, which is the coolest part of The Voice, I think.

Was it surreal working with the Muppets?

I grew up as an avid lover of the Muppets. I love them, so I got to do a little shoot with Miss Piggy, and she was pretty feisty. But seeing your childhood stars with all these hands up their asses just ruins it for you. Like, I knew they were puppets, but I didn’t need to see that.

It’s like when you see their full bodies in the movies, on bicycles and whatnot. Really creepy.

It is kind of strange. And all the puppeteers are men, so you realize a man is playing Miss Piggy. Like, my mind is blown!

I’d love for them to release footage of the guy making the voice.

What I noticed is that they’re really protective of their Muppets. When Miss Piggy doesn’t have a hand up her, they don’t allow her to be seen lifeless. They put a blanket over her.

Lastly, you recently posed for a NOH8 photo. Why was joining that campaign important for you?

I was a weird kid growing up. Like, super weird. The way I dressed now is the way I always dressed. I wasn’t black enough for some kids, but I wasn’t white either, so I never really knew where I fit in. I got teased incessantly. The way I see it, if we’re going to be a civilized society, we need to start loving people for who they are. My message is that we’re all brothers and sisters in this thing called life, so I love the broader picture of NOH8. Let’s not discriminate in the name of love.

The May 1 episode of The Voice began with an odd-couple performance by one of last season’s finalists, Dia Frampton, and rapper Kid Cudi. One of my favorites last season, Dia sounded great. There were other solid performances throughout the night, but Dia’s was definitely my favorite.

Next up came the eliminations. Christina Aguilera split her points evenly between both contestants, but America decided to save Chris Mann, who had a total of 104 points. His strong voice was clearly more appealing to America than Lindsey Pavao‘s distinct style.

Adam Levine gave Tony Lucca 60 points, leaving Katrina Parker with 40. In the end, America agreed with Adam and saved Tony, who had 108 points. So far so good in terms of my picks.

Blake Shelton split his points evenly between Jermaine Paul and Erin Martin, clearly unable to choose between the two. He left it up to America, and with 123 points, Jermaine was the clear winner.

The toughest choice of the night came from Cee Lo Green‘s team, which had fan-favorite Jamar Rogers up against powerhouse Juliet Simms competing. Cee Lo gave Jamar 40 points and Juliet 60, and after America’s votes were factored in, Juliet was saved with 121 points.

Was I watching the wrong show April 9, or were the majority of this week’s performances on The Voice pretty forgettable? I found myself desperately waiting for a knockout performance, but had to wait almost two hours to get it.

On team Adam Levine, Katrina Parker was decent. Then, power-house Kim Yarbrough sang Adele‘s ”Rolling in the Deep,” and while her big voice was ever present, her overall performance fell short of and didn’t quite fit her. The coaches seemed scared to tell her that, so they gave it to her nicely.

Mathai sang “Ordinary People,” using her quirky unique tone to try to charm the coaches, but her performance was a bit more lounge-like than nationwide competition-worthy. Tony Lucca received praises from the coaches, but I almost forgot about him by the time the show ended. And then there was Karla Davis, who took on “Airplanes” by B.O.B, but sounded like she was struggling more than singing.

One of my favorites, Pip, definitely knew how to work the crowd, but the song was a bit bigger than him and the coaches didn’t seem to happy with it. I actually thought he was the most interesting, but it’s up to America now.

Team Cee Lo Green didn’t do much better: Cheesa brought out all the stops, big hair, huge voice, and backup dancers — but vocally, she need’s work. James Massone was given an awkward song to sing (Norah Joans‘ “Don’t Know Why”) and really couldn’t do much with it other than sing in falsetto, though Blake Shelton admitted to almost throwing his panties on stage after his performance. … Wait, Blake wears panties? TMI.

Juliet Simms took on Sting, and while I wasn’t that fond of her over-the-top look, the coaches definitely loved her performance. Adam even labeled her performance the best one yet, which I thought was a bit of a stretch. Tony Vincent tried to stray from the theatrics, but he still seemed pretty theatrical, and Erin Martin seemed too over the top with her Egyptian-inspired performance. That’s definitely not the way to get people to notice your voice over your appearance!

As I said, the best was definitely saved for last: Jamar Rogers closed the show with a super-star performance that proved he’s got the quality’s to be big. He worked the crowd while keeping his vocals intact. He’s definitely got my vote.

For The Voice‘s first battle of the night, R&B singers Geoff McBride and Sera Hill took on “Chain of Fools.” 51-year-old Geoff claimed he had a better chance because he grew up on the music they were singing, and he backed up that confidence by blowing away Lionel Richie.

“His delivery is unbelievable,” Lionel said. “There’s no microphone! This is not coming off of a speaker.”

Sera wasn’t as loud, but still received support from mentor Jewel. In the end, she won over Christina Aguilera‘s heart, who said she had to go with her gut when she chose Sera.

Lindsey Pavao and Lee Koch were up next, and were surprised when Christina assigned them Nirvana‘s ”Heart-shaped Box” as their battle song. Lindsey seemed to think she had the upper hand with her love for Nirvana and familiarity with the song, but when it came down to their performance, Lee sounded so much more on pitch and was clearly the better performer. But Christina made her second surprising choice of the night when she picked Lindsey over Lee! Still wondering why? Same here.

Onto Blake Shelton‘s team: Charlotte Sometimes and Lex Lan were pit against each other because of their personalties. Charlotte, who Kelly Clarkson described as having an explosive personality, is a direct contrast to Lex who is a lot more conservative. While Lex gave it her all showcasing her “sexy” tone, as Cee Lo Green called it, Charlotte’s confidence eventually won out.

Sarah Golden and Juliet Simms were Cee Lo Green‘s first battle of the night. During rehearsals, Juliet showed a bit of cockiness when she stated that “she was swallowing” Sarah, then added to that with an over-the-top outfit. She and Sarah seemed to constantly be trying to out do each other, but Juliet’s raspy voice was her real secret weapon. Cee Lo put her through.

Adam Levine‘s only battle of the night featured 50-year-old Kim Yarbrough who went up against red-head Whitney Myer. But Kim’s soulful and powerful voice was still no match for the much younger Whitney, and Adam easily put her through.

The night’s final battle — and the big tear-jerking moment — came courtesy of Jamie Lono and BFF Jamar Rogers. The friends were dreading going up against each other, making the results of their battle that much more harder for them to handle. Both Jamie and Lamar broke into tears. Jaime tried to be supportive of Jamar, and Jamar tried to be happy, but he still fad being chosen over Jamie.

Even though it was obvious Jamar was the better of the two, it still made you wish Jamie didn’t have to go.

The battle rounds on The Voice are always intense, but the March 12 episode packs a particularly emotional punch, as best friends Jamar Rogers and Jamie Lono prepare to face off. “It sucks,” Jamie admitted on the Today show. “We became friends during the blind auditions; I call this guy my little brother.”

“My heart just dropped when I found out we had to sing against each other,” Jamar adds of the pre-taped episode.

And it doesn’t sound like Jamie was too thrilled to have to face off against Jamar, either.

“Ours will be a hard one to watch, because it’s hard to want to send either one of us home,” Jamie joked. “We both have our own unique styles, and I think a lot of people will latch onto that.”
