Gwyneth Paltrow, 38, was caught with way too much shine on her face at the Good Housekeeping Annual Shine On Awards in NYC. Find out how you can stay clear of this unflattering problem!

We all build up oil throughout the day, which is why our hair goes flat and our faces get shiny! Thankfully, we have a few tips to keep your face matte for longer.

Start with a primer. You want to prep your face with a primer so that it holds the makeup intact. Otherwise, makeup will gradually dissolve throughout the day — washing out your complexion.

Use a concealer. Concealers offer more coverage than foundation and you don’t have to put it all over your face! Less is always more!

Seal your makeup with powder. A translucent powder can help keep your makeup intact and mattifying powders specifically target oily surfaces to keep your face oil-free!

Blotting papers. These are your new best friends! Take them with you wherever you go! Just dab it on your forehead, cheeks and chin to remove oil without removing your makeup.

After lecturing parents about her hectic life as a working mom, which includes “weekly hair blow outs” and “hour-long workouts,” Gwyneth Paltrow now admits that she doesn’t always set the best example for her two kids with Coldplay‘s Chris Martin — Apple, 6, and Moses, 4. The Country Strong star confessed that she let Apple take a “sickie” from school so that she could spend time with her at the beauty salon. Is this okay?

“I’ll probably get kicked out of our school for admitting this, but I let Apple stay home yesterday. I just needed to be with her,” Gwyneth says in an interview with Good Housekeeping. “We went out to lunch, we went to the beauty salon, we were together.” Interesting. How did little brother Moses feel about this all-girls field trip? Not so surprisingly, he wasn’t a happy camper, so Gwyneth promised him a “sickie” as well. Great, is this going to become a common event, Gwyneth?

The 38-year-old admitted to being unhappy about Apple ratting out their secret getaway to her little brother. It must be hard being a celebrity, flying around constantly, going from job to job, but kids need order and discipline and they need to go to school. Just because you miss them doesn’t mean you should encourage them to play hooky for a day of pampering!

Gwyneth admits that she struggles with this. She recently took Apple and Moses to Hong Kong, where she was working, but tried to imply that it was a rich cultural experience for the kids.  She says, “I do feel so guilty and, like, ‘What am I doing?’ ‘But I also want them to know work is really fun for me – ‘Hey, look what I get to do!’ As opposed to feeling like, ‘Oh, I’m a terrible mother’. Because that really just doesn’t get you anywhere. It doesn’t get them anywhere.” We don’t think you’re a bad mom, Gwyn, but if you continue keeping your kids out of school, we just might have a change of heart.

And Gwyneth admits that she comes ‘this close’ to being a pushover. Hmm… “I’m in a battle right now because Apple doesn’t like to go to gymnastics,” she explains. “When she’s crying about it, I just want to scoop her up and say, ‘Forget it. Let’s go get an ice cream.’ But you can’t do that, of course. That’s something my father taught me. You need to be accountable, and you need to be responsible. You need to honor your commitments.” I completely agree and I’m sure Tiger Mom, Amy Chua, would too. Although, she definitely wouldn’t agree with manis and pedis during school hours!

So … this is weird. We were at a red carpet event last night, and out of nowhere, Kristen Bell starts hysterically crying — right in front of us!

We’ve spent all day trying to uncover what Kristen Bell was so upset about April 12. HollywoodLife.com saw the Couple’s Retreat actress on the red carpet for the Good Housekeeping ‘Shine On’ event at The New York City Center, and right as we were about to speak to her, she burst into tears! We’ve called her reps for an explanation, but since they are refusing to get back to us, we are just going to go ahead and tell you what we saw.

It all started when Kristen was approached by a young brunette girl, who is the assistant to Dr. Mehmet Oz‘s wife, Lisa Oz. The girl tapped Kristen on the shoulder, Kristen turned around, and started SOBBING! We mean, like, major waterworks. And then they embraced for what seemed like forever.

We don’t know how Kristen and the girl are connected, but she does have two half sisters and four step-siblings … so we do think this girl is probably related to her in some way.

But Kristen, what happened!? It did seem like they were tears of joy — but we can’t figure out who this girl was, or what made you cry so hard when you saw her. (Again, your publicists are not returning our calls or explaining anything to us.)

When Kristen finished her hugging/crying session, we asked if we could speak to her, but … she told us, “I have to fix my makeup.” It was SO BIZARRE. BFFs can you explain? Why do you think Kristen was crying when she saw this girl?

After having just written about braids being everywhere yesterday, lo and behold, Hilary Duff showed up to Good Housekeeping’s 125th Anniversary party in NYC on Apr. 12 sporting a gorgeous braided bun. There are so many things I love about her take on spring’s most ubiquitous trend. Firstly, the height in the front. It lends softness to the overall look and is super flattering since it’s not slick to her head. The wispy pieces coming down by her ears add to the romantic, easy feel of the updo as well. Lastly, the fishtail braid that has been wrapped around itself in the back is truly unique. I’ve seen a lot of regular braids pinned up into a bun but Hilary’s fishtail version is totally unexpected and oh so pretty. – Marta Topran
