Maddie’s devastated parents have called off the investigation after studying photos of the girl spotted by tourists in a Himalayan town — and deciding it’s not their daughter.

Gerry and Kate McCann were placed on alert after a British woman spotted a girl bearing a remarkable likeness to Madeleine, who disappeared from her parents Portuguese vacation villa in May 2007. How sad that it’s turned out to be a false alarm!

“Kate and Gerry do not believe the child seen in India was Madeleine,” the couple’s spokesperson confirms. “They have seen photographic evidence and concluded that it was not her.”

“We remain grateful for people’s vigilance around the world. Madeleine is still out there and the search for her very much continues.”

The tourist was so convinced the girl was Madeleine, she raised the alarm and an American visitor tried to grab the girl from the Belgian man and French woman who claimed to be her parents!

Maddie vanished a few days short of her fourth birthday. If she’s still alive, she’d be eight-years-old now.

The McCanns promise to never give up the search for their daughter as they release their new book, ‘Madeleine,’ today, Maddy’s birthday.

Maddy McCann, who went missing from her British family’s rental apartment in Praia de Luz, Portugal at 10 p.m. on May 3, 2007, turns 8 years old today. And her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, are renewing their hope that they will find their daughter and bring her home.

In her book, simply titled Madeleine, Kate recalls the moment she realized her then four-year-old daughter was gone. Seeing the windows open and Maddy’s bed empty, Kate writes that she felt “nausea, terror, disbelief, fear. Icy fear,” and said to herself, “Dear God, no! Please, no!”

Maddy’s disappearance, which has captivated people around the world, is told through the eyes of her mother, who has been working on the book for the past year.

“We hope and pray that it will bring us the result we long for and that not only the book but this whole ordeal and heartache will be behind us before too much longer,” Kate writes on the Find Madeleine website.

All proceeds from the book will benefit Madeleine’s Fund, which Kate and Gerry use to finance their ongoing investigation into the mystery.
