‘Fashion Star’ models and judge Nicole Richie were styled with Suave Professionals products on the March 15 fashion reality show — here’s how you can get the exact look seen on the runway!
Nicole Richie, 31, and Jessica Simpson may have the power as the beautiful judges on the show, but the models looked just as pretty! Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist Theodore Leaf created the glamourous waves for the runway and he breaks down the look for HollywoodLifers below!
The ‘Fashion Star’ winner shared her personal experience with the talented team of mentors — and she gushed about how Jessica was her number one motivator throughout the competition!
After keeping the outcome of her success on the show hush hush for roughly nine months, the winner of ‘Fashion Star, Kara Laricks, expressed what a relief it was to be able to finally celebrate her big win with friends after watching the exciting finale. “It was just like a huge sigh of relief and so exciting to be able to finally blab about it!” She also went on to share her personal experience, working with the amazing team.
The show’s stylist, Daniel Musto, has been recapping the show and sharing behind-the-scenes stories throughout the entire season — see what he had to say about the exciting finale!
Other competition shows buffer the focus of their finale with huge musical numbers and celebrity guests. On Fashion Star, it’s ALL about the clothes! Setting an example for the expectations we had of the contestants, the show started with Jessica Simpson‘s very first runway presentation of her collection.
The show’s stylist told us what it was like working on the emotional episode, where they had to say goodbye to three contestants. Read on for his recap!
Fashion Star‘s contestants have sold over two million dollars in just eight episodes. This week, double the money is on the line as the contestant’s have to design two items that any of the stores can buy. That’s right: buyer’s choice.
The fashion competition gets serious for the final 6 designers — catch a sneak peek at episode 9, WATCH right here!
With just 6 hopeful designers remaining, Fashion Star is just two episodes away from crowning it’s first winner! This week’s challenge will be the most stressful one yet, and will require the designer’s to work directly with the buyers from Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M — we can’t wait to see how they handle this next curve ball!
The show’s stylist, Daniel Musto, told us all about what it was like on set while the contestants styled their first fashion campaign — read on for more on the emotional episode!
“Who’s your campaign?” That was our question of the week for the Fashion Star contestants last night. We have less than half the number of designers with which we began, and the competition is getting rough. While organizing a print campaign, some designers triumphed while others became frustrated and showed their true colors. This week was especially fun for me, being that the contestants and I were able to focus on branding and marketing. A clothing company is nothing without its image, and still-photos of the product a step toward fully determining a demographic.
The show’s stylist, Daniel Musto, told us all about what it was really like for the designers to work with the mentors!
Our mentors play a crucial role in the design process of Fashion Star. This week, they guided and directed the contestants toward success, as they helped conceptualize the designs. Saks, Macy’s, and H+M rely on the product’s appeal in order to bring money into their companies. This week, the mentors were in control. They put their names on the designs that were created and made sure that the final products were up to par.

Fashion Star is down to it’s final eight designers! While stress levels are higher than ever, the remaining contestants will have to pull it together for their next difficult challenge. This week it will be the celebrity mentors, Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos, who will decide what what goes down the runway — we can’t wait to see what they pick!

Think outside of the box. What would you do if asked to step outside of your comfort zone? Well, tonight I am just coming in from a Levi’s event featuring Snoop Dogg as the DJ and host of the night. Intimate crowd, amazing night. Not my typical Tuesday evening, but definitely worth venturing out. On tonight’s Fashion Star, some of the contestants got the same excitement while exploring the unexplored.
The show’s stylist, Daniel Musto, recapped last night’s episode giving us a behind-the-scenes look at what really went into the teamwork challenge while designing store windows. Read his recap right here!
This week, Fashion Star shoved the retail environment down the throats of the contestants. Not only did they need to impress the buyers with hanger-appeal, but they needed to win them over with window-appeal. This week’s goal: design looks that will catch the eye of a passersby, luring them in to the store for more! The window displays used on our stage featured real models, who followed up the window installment with a walk down the runway. These showcases hit the buyers from all directions. Nicole Richie even said, “It’s not about being subtle when you’re in a window. You really have to throw it in peoples’ faces.” As someone who has studied window display and had many opportunities to design them for L.A.’s hottest stores, it was a lot of fun passing my creative knowledge on to the contestants, some of whom have never designed a window display before.
As the fashion reality show gets closer to crowning it’s first winner, the competition only gets tougher for the remaining designers — get a sneak peek at episode 5 here!
After sending home four hopeful designers, Fashion Star finally has it’s final top 10! Though they’ve come a long way, unfortunately the designers won’t be able to celebrate just yet. As the competition gets even tougher, we can’t wait to see how they handle working together in this week’s challenge — for the first time!

As a wardrobe stylist on a huge television show, I become friendly with the other beauty departments, but don’t often have much time with them. Julianne Kaye, with Maybelline doing makeup, and Theodore Leaf, with Suave doing hair, were Fashion Star‘s other department heads. Tonight, we decided to watch the show together, which was tough because we had SO much to say about each of our experiences. It was exciting to hear the drama that was happening in other areas of our set, while I was knee-deep in shoes in my office! Whether Theodore was teaching us his secret for adding volume to a model’s bouffant, or Julianne was explaining what specific eyeshadows last longer on different skin tones, our mouths were running a mile a minute.
The hopeful designers will face their toughest challenge yet — get a sneak peek at episode 4 here, WATCH!
The competition will continue to heat up on this week’s episode of Fashion Star — we can’t wait to see which talented designers will score a deal with the buyers and find out why their next challenge has them SO stressed out!

As we enter our third week, America is more excited than ever to get their grubby little hands on the Fashion Star merchandise. Our west coast fans have even started logging on to our retailers’ websites during the east coast feed to ensure the availability of the winning merchandise!
Last week we bid farewell to the most flamboyant of the contestants, Oscar. Our top-hatted friend let his ego get in the way and disappointed the buyers. Although he and I had a few laughs together backstage, he let me down by speaking negatively of his fellow contestants. I’ve always known to treat your peers the way you wish to be treated. That way, your successes will run parallel, as opposed to cutting each other off. That’s the most important lesson I have latched onto during my career as a stylist.

Episode 2 of NBC’s Fashion Star jumps head-first into the game! With a boisterous crowd, anxious contestants, and a sparkly Elle Macpherson, we are introduced to the first few contestants: Kara Laricks, Lisa Vian Hunter and Ronnie Escalante. Last week, Kara showed her crisp collar-tie neckpieces. Although a stunning accessory for a female or male customer, the mentors and buyers were underwhelmed. Seen as a bad choice of design in this competition, it was a fun opportunity for me, as the show’s stylist, to put full looks together that flattered Kara’s signature statement collars.
