Instead of taking baby Alayna to a doctor, Timothy and Rebecca Wyland prayed. Her tumor then grew to the size of a baseball and pushed her eyeball out of its socket!

The Wylands, members of a Christina sect that shuns medicine, lost custody of Alayna and are standing trial in an Oregon court on child abuse charges. They face a possible five year prison sentence. Is that enough punishment?‘Timothy and Rebecca Wyland recognized that medical attention was mandated for this condition, but instead “anointed her with oils and laid down hands,” Oregon state prosecutor Christine Landers told the court.

Poor Alayna went without proper medical attention for months and months and by the time she was 6 months old the growth was so big she was almost blind in one eye.

After her case was discovered, Alayna was taken into care and given treatment for the tumor, which is known as a hemangioma. She’s now 17 months old and thought to be recovering well — while her parents are facing time behind bars.

It’s the latest controversy involving the The Followers of Christ Church. An investigation by The Oregonian newspaper in 1998 claimed 21 children in the sect had died from preventable causes!
