After the Grey’s Anatomy season premiere, viewers still had plenty of questions about the plane crash, and thankfully, most of those holes were filled on the Oct. 4 episode, as we learned exactly what happened when the doctors were found. After being rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, the doctors were forced to get back on a plane to Seattle — and fortunately, they were sedated this time.

It seems Mark (Eric Dane) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) weren’t the only ones who had to cope with post-crash complications. A traumatized, mute Cristina (Sandra Oh) suffered from violent outbursts, forcing her to be put on psychiatric lockdown. After injuring his hand in the crash, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) learned that that he’ll only be able regain 80 percent of its original function. We all know that it will not be a beautiful night to save lives if Dr. McDreamy’s magical hands are not at their best! With Callie’s (Sara Ramirez) encouragement, Derek decided to undergo a more risky surgery that offered more recovery for his hand.

During a bath, Cristina finally broke her silence and relayed her traumatic experiences to Owen (Kevin McKidd) — but instead of dealing with her demons, Cristina decided to run from them. As she packed up her car to “flee” what she believed to be a cursed Seattle Grace for Minnesota, she and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) got in a heated argument, which led to Meredith revoking Cristina’s “person” title. (Weep!)

Although we all know Mark’s tragic fate, the road ahead didn’t always seem so dim. An upbeat Mark appeared to be on his way to recovery; He was smiling, cracking jokes, and doing what he does best: flirting! But the Chief (James Pickens Jr.) recognized Mark’s mood it for what it really was: “The surge,” which the chief defines as the last surge of energy before a terminally ill patient dies.

Arizona’s situation was a difficult one. Being a doctor, Arizona knew that the options for her infected leg were limited, but she refused to face it. Callie fought to find an alternative option for Arizona, but while she operated on Derek’s hand, Arizona went into septic shock and Callie was faced with an urgent decision: to amputate or not to amputate? Unfortunately, Callie gave Alex (Justin Chambers) the go-ahead to remove Arizona’s leg. (Obviously.)

We also saw Mark have to make the agonizing decision to be taken off life support after 30 days of no improvement. Little did Mark know, he was signing his own death warrant.

Unlike Cristina, Meredith was able to see the good in Seattle, inspiring her to give up the job she was offered at Harvard to stay at Seattle Grace Mercy West and focus on her family.

But it wasn’t all bad. In the last minutes of the episode, Cheredith fans did receive some comfort. Although Meredith dethroned herself as Cristina’s “person,” Cristina called Meredith from Minnesota and warmly reminded Meredith that she will always be “her person.”

When Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) met her untimely end on last season’s finale of Grey’s Anatomy, fans blew up the internet with their unbridled rage — but it turns out they were just getting warmed up! The surprise death on the Sept. 27 season premiere sent viewers into a blind fury, the likes of which Twitter has never seen; and all of their hate was directed at Grey‘s creator Shonda Rhimes!

In case you didn’t see last night’s episode — or if you just enjoy reliving horrific tragedies — Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) took his final breath after being taken off life support. We knew Eric was leaving the show this season, but the details surrounding his departure were kept under wraps. And for good reason, apparently.

Not only is it totally inappropriate to threaten someone’s life on Twitter, but also, let’s be real: One of the reasons we all love Grey’s Anatomy is because unexpected twists lurk around every corner. Regardless of how you feel about a character dying, you can’t deny the genius that is Shonda Rhimes.

A new year means a new round of interns at Seattle Grace! On the Sept. 27 season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, we learned Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is no longer the reigning stern attending, thanks to a harsher Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), who has earned the nickname “Medusa.” After the plane crash, Christina (Sandra Oh) left Seattle Grace and is now working at a hospital in Minnesota. Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is also mysteriously missing from the halls of Seattle Grace.

But the most shocking revelation after the plane crash was that Mark (Eric Dane) was in a coma! He requested to be taken off life support after 30 days if there were no signs of recovery  – so at 5:00, his time would be up.

The doctors continued their day, avoiding the ticking clock. Alex (Justin Chambers) was up to his usual antics, initiating the new batch of interns — by sleeping with them. It looks like Dr. Bailey’s happiness with Ben (Jason George) has caused her to lose her power over the new interns.

Meanwhile, Christina had trouble adjusting to working with a new group of doctors in Minnesota. A new head of pediatric surgery, Dr. Mel Barnett (Phillip Casnoff), was also introduced — further deepening the mystery of Arizona’s absence.

Callie (Sara Ramirez)  and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) teamed up for Derek’s first surgery since he injured his hand in the plane crash, and during the surgery, he lost his grasp on a tool and left the O.R. in frustration.

When 5:00 finally arrived, the Chief, Derek and Callie tearfully gathered around Mark’s bedside as he was taken off life support. His heart rate slowly tapered off, and another life at Seattle Grace was lost.

Several of the doctors were also faced with flying for the first time since the crash. Christina tried to fly back to Seattle in time to say goodbye to Mark, but she ended up backing out. Meredith tried to go to Minnesota to visit Christina, but panicked on the plane and abandoned ship before it took off. Alex was supposed to leave for his fellowship, but he also ditched his flight. In fact, the only doctor who succeeded in flying was Owen (Kevin McKidd), who went to April’s (Sarah Drew) home to give her her job back.

The mystery surrounding Arizona was finally revealed at the end of the episode: She did survive the plane crash, but she’s certainly not okay — one of her legs had to be amputated!

Grey’s Anatomy is seriously losing steam — well, McSteamy, to be exact. HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site TV Line is reporting that Eric Dane is checking out of the hit ABC medical drama after more than six clothing-optional seasons. But there is some good news: Dr. Mark Sloan will return to Seattle Grace at the beginning of season nine to wrap up his story line.

“I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey’s, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run,” Eric tells the site. “It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes.”

Shonda also spoke to the site, clarifying that Eric’s exit was a decision they came to together.

Personally, I can’t say I’m too surprised to see him leave. When Lexie (Chyler Leigh) died on the eighth season finale, Sloan was devastated — not to mention he was suddenly without a love interest. (And what’s the use of Sloan if he isn’t plowing someone in the break room?)

But rather than focus on the sad news of Sloan’s departure, let’s remember the good times — and by that, I mean the doctor’s first appearance during the second season finale. (That towel should have been credited as a special guest star. For real.)

We were all devastated when Lexie died on Grey’s Anatomy but nobody was more upset than Mark Sloan himself. So what does the actor who plays Mark, Eric Dane, feel about Chyler Leigh leaving the show?

Eric told E! Online that he wasn’t entirely surprised by Lexie’s death. “I knew that Chyler wanted to spend some more time with her family, and it’s difficult,” he said. “It’s a tough schedule to keep up and she’s been working on the show for five seasons, so I wasn’t shocked. A little surprised, but not shocked, and we’re going to miss her.”

Still, even though Lexie is gone, does he see her as Mark’s soul mate? “I think so. I think that’s how it ended up.”

Sniffle.

Meanwhile, Sarah Drew, whose character April drew wrath from Lexie fans who claimed April should have been the one to die in the season finale, admitted she cried when she found out Chyler was leaving. “We were all weeping at the table read because nobody knew it was coming,” she revealed. “There were rumors that maybe somebody might die, but nobody knew who. Well I guess she knew, but the rest of us didn’t! We really did sob our way through that table read, it was pretty sad.”

Grey’s Anatomy reached a new high (or low) with their big patient case this week — a man who had his penis removed due to cancer and needed a new one. But at least there was only one instance of Derek (Patrick Dempsey) sucking.

Lucky for us, No Penis Guy brought us Jackson’s (Jesse Williams) mom, the world-renowned Dr. Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen), who wanted to perform the revolutionary penis transplant. Of course, she butted heads with Mark (Eric Dane), which was awesome. McSteamy argued that they should go for the more traditional route of reconstruction, but a few funny penis-quips from Jackson’s mom put him in his place.

Jackson, himself, was annoyed with his mom’s presence — enough so that he sent girlfriend Lexie (Chyler Leigh) out of town so his mom couldn’t meet her, which bothered “Mrs. Dr. Avery,” as Mark dubbed her.

Catherine held a contest to see which surgeons would scrub in with her, aside from Mark. Cristina (Sandra Oh) and April (Sarah Drew) were knocked out of the game early, and it came down to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jackson. Alex received an urgent page and bowed out.

That page was about Zola — Mer and Der’s kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really daughter. She had a seizure, and the evil adoption woman made it clear that Meredith and Derek were not to know. So of course, Alex told them.

(Incidentally, Meredith had to leave the penis transplant surgery because of this, and I’m not sure how I feel. She’s at a crossroads in her career — no one wants to work with her and yet she’s clearly a gifted surgeon. Should she had really given up this chance? But then, I’m not a mother.)

April replaced Meredith in the penis transplant, and actually screwed it up. Luckily, Mark swooped in and saved the day with some MacGyvering, impressing Catherine. The surgeons shared a moment. But as it turns out, Mark is still not over Lexie, something Catherine picked up on, and told her son. (We did see Catherine hitting on Richard (James Pickens Jr.), and it’s clear these two had a past. And damn, Richard does really like the high-powered doctor ladies.)

In Derek didn’t suck too much news, at the beginning of the episode, he refused to fold Zola’s close with Meredith and even threw a onesie down in frustration. His manner did improve as the show went on. Mercifully, he acted like a real husband to our beloved Mer, comforting her when she cried over Zola’s surgery and holding her hand in the elevator. At that moment, the doors opened and the evil adoption woman saw the wannabe parents. From the look on her face, I think she knew that they knew about Zola. This can’t be good.

Other things of note: Owen is definitely not over the abortion. Watching him watch Cristina with Zola, it was clear he was upset. Elsewhere, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) broke up with the hot nurse, and will probably start dating the hot doctor again. Although why these men both want her is beyond me — she’s been a huge b*tch this season.

Here’s my big rant of the week — as it seems this will be a continuing theme. Bailey doesn’t want to work with Meredith, and I bet none of the other doctors do either. Why didn’t they shun Richard when he was performing surgeries drunk? And I’ve obviously discussed the entire Izzy stole a heart situation. All Meredith did was give a woman medicine. This does not compute. But then again, life isn’t fair.

Grey’s Anatomy returns tonight, Sept. 22, and not only should the focus of the eighth season be on Meredith, Derek, Christina, Alex and Bailey, but Callie, Arizona and Mark should be pushed to the sideline!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Callie, Arizona and Mark. But good lord the show was all about them last season.

Over the course of the year, Arizona received an offer to run a clinic in Africa, planned to take Callie with her, but then dumped Callie in the airport because Callie whined a little bit about leaving Seattle. While Arizona was away (Thank you, Jessica Capshaw‘s maternity leave), Callie was so upset she slept with her one-time friend-with-benefits Mark. But then, Arizona miraculously returned and begged her ex for forgiveness, and promised to do whatever it took to win Callie back.

Unfortunately for Arizona, that meant having to raise Mark’s baby, because Callie revealed she was pregnant. The two-mom-one-dad shenanigans continued humorously for a while, until the big car crash. Callie was critically injured and the baby was born very prematurely. We had to suffer through the weird musical episode from Callie’s point of view, while the doctors worked to save her and the baby. Luckily for them, everyone ended up fine. And Arizona proposed.

Then they wed in an elaborately beautiful ceremony (not without a little angst in the form of Callie’s parents) and lived happily ever after — however long that lasts in Shonda Rhimes-world.

Compare that to what happened to Meredith and Derek.  They ran an Alzheimer’s trial. That was pretty much it. Yes, they got married and adopted a baby and Meredith messed with the trial and Derek maybe-kinda-sorta left her. But that was all at the end. The Callie-Arizona-Mark show lasted ALL SEASON.

It wasn’t just Mer and Der who didn’t get the screen time they deserved, the other original Grey’s members fell by the way side, too. I want more Cristina (and therefore more Owen), I want more Alex and I want more Bailey. (Surely they have something better for the Nazi than just hot sex with a very sexy nurse. Admittedly, that was fun, but Bailey is more than just a romp in the on-call room.)

As for the rest of the characters, I mostly like them. I hope Lexie doesn’t run back to Mark and sticks with Avery and his beautiful abs. I hope April fails spectacularly as Chief Resident because she annoys me. And I really hope that Henry dies, because this whole Teddy-Henry storyline reeks of Izzy-Denny. (Come on, you know it does.)

So please, Shonda, go back to the original characters and bench Mark, Callie and Arizona for a while! I’m begging you!
