This number is higher than every other developed country — do YOU think it’s a problem?

New reports are saying one in four kids in the United States is being raised by just one parent — that’s more than any other developed nation!

The report, which was released on April 27 by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, says that this number is on the rise, the Associated Press reports. In America, 25.8 percent of children are raised by a single parent, compared to the average of 14.9 percent among the other industrialized countries in the study.

The reason for this rise in single parent households? The stigma of divorce has lessened and the rise of single parenthood has allowed for parents to feel more comfortable with such an arrangement.

“When our parents married, there was a sense that you were marrying for life,” Edward Zigler, founder and director of Yale’s Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, tells the Associated Press. “That sense is not as prevalent.”
