Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ son Dylan was born with a form of dyslexia, but since 2010 has been attending a special school in Bermuda, where his family moved to from New York  – and he’s making amazing progress!

Dylan and his little sister Carys, 8, have adjusted to their new lives, but they’re not the only ones with their hands full — Michael continues to battle stage four throat cancer on top of balancing fatherhood, marriage and his career and Catherine was recently released after a stay in rehab for her bout with depression.

“I’m not driven like I once was — these days I am consumed with being a father and with my responsibilities as a husband,” he once admitted, “I never anticipated starting a family at my age. I’m genuinely happy to let Catherine work, while I stay at home with the children. I cherish this time.”

Happy Birthday Carys! After a rough year dealing with dad Michael‘s cancer treatments, Carys and her brother Dylan, 10, had to support their mom Catherine as she headed off to seek treatment for her bipolar disorder. But now, the whole family is back together again and everyone is doing well — and we are so glad to hear it!

“I see a lot of myself in both of them to the point where, with my daughter, I can read her like a book. She’s a mini me,” Catherine says of Carys. “I think they’re both a real mix between me and Michael. I think Dylan looks more like me and Carys is a mix of both.”

Carys got an early birthday gift from dad when he took her to see the Ranger game on Sunday, April 17, at Madison Square Garden! Awesome, she’s a sports lover!

The actor’s two kids actually stood by his bedside as he was blasted with radiation therapy and pumped with powerful chemotherapy drugs! What a strong family!

During his interview with NBC‘s the Today show, to announce his victory over deadly throat cancer, Michael Douglas revealed he took his children with wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones — son Dylan, 10, and daughter Carys, 7 — with him to cancer treatment appointments so they could understand what he was going through.

He told host Matt Lauer, “I took them down to a couple of radiation treatments. So they came into the room and they saw all the Star Wars treatment going around. And they saw them put the mask on your face because they have to kind of bolt you down, like Hannibal Lecter.” HollyMoms, would you expose your children to the harsh realities of cancer?

His tumor may be gone, but Michael, 66, hasn’t been given the all clear yet. He has a series of check ups booked to ensure the cancer doesn’t return. And the Baltimore-based doctor, who treated the star, insists relapses are common. Specialist Marilyn Blackston tells Star,  “No matter how good he looks now, he is not out of the woods yet, regardless of how well the therapy went. The five-year survival  rate for this type of cancer is less than 50 per cent.”

But in the meantime, Michael is determined to celebrate beating the tumor with a new outlook on life, adding, “There’s a much a deeper feeling. You just really, really appreciate what’s important in life.”

Michael Douglas is in the fight of his life as he battles aggressive throat cancer. His wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones is currently in China doing charity work, but don’t worry, the gaunt-looking 66-year-old is in great hands — his daughter, Carys, is taking good care of him!

Of course, the sweet 7-year-old and her older brother Dylan, 10, are worried about their dad, especially since he’s lost so much weight since he began grueling radiation and chemotherapy treatments eight weeks ago. “He was determined not to have a feeding tube,” says his publicist and friend Allen Burry. Because the treatments make swallowing so difficult, Michael’s daughter has become his personal chef!

“Carys makes Michael smoothies and shakes to get his weight up,” a source close to the  Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps actor tells Star. That’s so sweet! We give that little lady a lot of credit for taking such good care of her dad. Don’t you think Catherine and Michael are raising some awesome kids?

Amazingly, the sick star has been trying to stay positive about his health crisis and is using this time to bond with his children. “Michael’s been trying to spend lots of time with the kids and help them process what’s happening,” explains the insider. “He doesn’t want to scare them but he does want to prepare them.”

The movie star is dealing with his own personal battle against cancer, but Michael Douglas’ number one priority is his family and being a supportive father.

Michael Douglas, 66, has a lot going on in his life — a recent move from Bermuda to New York City, a hit movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and an intense battle with stage four throat cancer. And in a new interview with UK newspaper The Guardian, Michael — who said recently that he relocated to Manhattan so that his 10-year-old, Dylan, could attend a special school — explains his son’s special needs. “My son deals with dyslexia to a degree — it runs in the family and my brother has it,” he admits. “He goes to a special school.”

With all these things to focus on, Michael’s priority is his family, wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, 41, Dylan and daughter Carys, 7. “I’m not driven like I once was — these days I am consumed with being a father and with my responsibilities as a husband,” he says. “I never anticipated starting a family at my age. I like to get them up in the morning and get them ready for school,” Michael says. “I make them breakfast, and we talk about their day. I like to know who their friends are. I can see the tightness of the bond we feel and the security they have. It is tremendous, unequivocal love with no judgment, and that is the best feeling in the world.”

The real reason Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones moved their family from Bermuda to New York is so that their son Dylan can go to a specialized school.

Michael Douglas is currently battling throat cancer, but the 65-year-old is putting his family first. The Wall Street 2 star, who has been walking his daughter, Carys, 7, to school each day before his chemo sessions, has revealed why he and Catherine Zeta-Jones, 40, made the decision to move their family back to the US from Bermuda. They did it for their son, Dylan, 10. “One of our kids has some special needs and it was recommended that he go to a special school in the New York area,” explained Michael.

The Oscar winner — who has an older son, Cameron, 31, who is currently serving a prison sentence on drug charges — says having a second family with Catherine at this late stage in his life has given him a chance to put his career second and his family first (something he admits he didn’t always do with Cameron). “My littlest kids see more of me than Cameron did,” admits Michael, who was often away from home on a film set while Cameron was growing up.

“These little pieces of innocence — to wake them and find they’re so happy to see me! It is unequivocal love, no question about it. And oh God is that rare!” he’s said about Dylan  and Carys. Michael Douglas, who was diagnosed with cancer in early August, has already started aggressive medical treatment, but he’s not letting it slow him down. The 65-year-old was spotted walking his daughter Carys, 7, to school in NYC today (Sept. 13) before heading to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. “It’s a fight,” the Oscar-winner says of the chemo and radiation, “It really knocks you out.”

While his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 40, says the hardest part is seeing her husband slowing down, “because Michael is never tired,” the actor admits he’s “just taking it a day at a time and trying to do my homework with the program and rest.”

When Michael learned his diagnosis, he sat down with Carys and her big brother Dylan, 10, and told them the news himself. Since then, the pair have accompanied their dad to his treatment sessions. “They liked seeing all the Star Wars stuff about it,” Michael admits. “I think it relieved them of the fear of the unknown.”
