A heartbroken Madonna Badger, 47,  bravely made it through the funeral of her three young daughters and parents, who she lost in a Christmas Day fire, but in the weeks following she tried to take her life after clearly not being able to handle the extreme emotional pain. She’s now been released from the hospital, and experts that HollywoodLife.com consulted suggest how she can begin to cope with such a devastating loss.

The experts we spoke to say that while in the hospital Madonna would have been under constant supervision, been given mood stabilizers and kept from anything that she could use to harm herself. “She would have been getting psychotherapy or intervention — doctors would have been speaking with her, helping her identify” why she tried to take her own life, explained psychologist Jeff Gardere, Associate Professor at Touro College in Osteopathic Medicine.

“She is drowning in an avalanche of sadness, guilt and pain,” says psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman, author of Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets.

“She undoubtedly is in the mindset of ‘if only,’” says psychotherapist Dr. Gilda Carle, author of How To Win At Love. “If only I had done this, done that… then this would not have happened. You know you just can’t do that to yourself. That will only make you more upset.”

Now that she’s out of the hospital, Madonna can take these steps towards recovery:

•  Turn to family and friends. “Even when she comes off suicide watch, she needs family and friends, who can be with her, listen to her, keep her company and speak to her,” advises Dr. Gardere. “She shouldn’t be alone for the next several months, for the minimum.”
• But don’t depend on boyfriend, Michael Borcino. ”She probably should start by ditching her boyfriend,” suggests Dr. Lieberman. “Though it is unlikely that he purposely started the fire, he certainly isn’t someone she can lean on. And she will always blame him for the fire. What will help — in addition to ongoing psychiatric treatment — may be turning to God and her religion, throwing herself into her work, doing volunteer work — perhaps with children, considering being a foster parent or adopting children, if she cannot become a parent again herself biologically.”
• Know it will take time. “You never get over the loss of children,” says psychotherapist Dr. Jenn Berman, author of A to Z: Guide to Raising Happy, Confident Kids. “It defies the natural order of life where parents are not supposed to outlive their children. It’s going to take a lot of therapy, and a lot of time” to get over this.
• Don’t place blame on anyone. “Just accept that this happened, this just happened,” says Dr. Carle. “This is one of those situations where no one can even begin to fathom that kind of loss, that kind of tragedy, unless its happened to you,” says Dr. Gardere.

We hope Madonna will be able to somehow get through this very tragic time!

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s seemingly wonderful and strong marriage is reportedly on the rocks, but experts say they won’t be the ones who will suffer the heartache — their kids will.

The news broke today (August 23) that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are possibly calling it quits after 13 years of marriage, and we’re shocked! But we’re sure no one else is more surprised than their kids, Jaden, 13, and Willow, 10, who have worked hard to create a strong family foundation that has now fallen out from under them.

“If Will and Jada separate, it will be especially hard on their children because – just like the rest of us – they never saw it coming,” Dr. Carole Lieberman, celebrity psychiatrist and best-selling author, tells HollyBaby.com.

“Sure, there must have been hints,” she adds, “but the kids wanted to believe all their parents’ assurances that they would never get divorced.”

And Dr. Jenn Berman, psychologist and author of The A to Z Guide To Raising Happy Confident Kids, tells HollyBaby.com, ”Willow and Jaden are in very formative years and divorce is always traumatic. Their family foundation is falling apart — it’s like having a rug pulled out from under you.”

But what both experts are concerned about is what caused this sudden split. Was it the balance of fame between Will and Jada and their instantly successful kids that might have stirred up some controversy within their seemingly perfect marriage?

“I wouldn’t point the finger at the kids’ careers,” Dr. Berman adds. “But it’s tough for any family to juggle the needs of each individual and it’s definitely tougher when everyone has a Hollywood career. Not to mention the media spotlight is constantly on them,” she adds.

Dr. Lieberman, on the other hand, thinks Jaden and Willow’s careers might have played a role in their parents’ alleged separation.

“Though we don’t yet know the details as to what may have caused the split, one possibility is that Jada finally realized that life was passing her by as she sacrificed her music and acting career for that of her kids,” Dr. Lieberman explains. “And Will may be having a mid-life crisis, as well.”

No matter what the outcome of their marriage, Will and Jada will have a lot to talk about with their children, who include Will’s son from a previous relationship, Trey, 18.

“All children of divorce blame themselves to some extent,” Dr. Lieberman adds, “and if they feel that their fame has become ill-gotten gains at the expense of their parents’ marriage, they’ll be even more distraught.”

It’s hard enough to help a child deal with a parent’s death, but when suicide is involved, it’s that much worse. Experts say Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong should let her 5-year-old Kennedy know that her daddy, Russell Armstrong, has passed on and is no longer with her, even though Taylor’s initial reaction might be to hide the news from her for a while. Experts say therapy is the key to Kennedy’s recovery, especially due to the circumstances of abuse, divorce and suicide. Do you agree?

“Five-year-old children don’t understand the concept of death, but they do understand the concept that a person is no longer with us,” Clinical psychologist and contributor to healthguru.com, Dr. Jeff Gardere tells HollyBaby.com. “They may think that they may be able to bring that person back and that’s something that’s pretty natural for them to think, but its the job of the parent to tell them that death is irreversible and the parent will not be coming back.”

“But this is where the religious stuff comes in,” Dr. Gardere adds, “Like ‘Daddy is in heaven,’ or ‘Daddy can hear from heaven,’ and so this is going to be an ongoing series of conversations between mom and his daughter.”

Psychotherapist Dr. Gilda Carle agrees, saying that Taylor will most likely come up with “seemingly fantasy like reasons” to give Kennedy in order for her to believe that daddy isn’t coming back, like, “you can talk to him, but he won’t be able to answer you back.”

As time goes on though, Kennedy will start asking questions about what really happened and where Daddy is. That’s when Taylor will have to watch her own reaction very carefully, says Dr. Carle.

And Dr. Gardere adds, “Are you going to lie to the child? You can’t do that. The mother is going to have to explain to her what he did.”

Most importantly though, Kennedy will have to be put into therapy to deal with the fact that her father took his own life, which most likely will have long-term effects on her.

“When you have a 5-year-old, it might be to their advantage to take her to a child psychologist and explain the process and issues that are going to be naturally part of her life for the next few years,” Dr. Gardere tells HollyBaby.com. “There is evidence that shows that a parent committing suicide dramatically increases the risk to take their own life later on. I highly recommend, because it was a suicide, that they go to family counseling and the child be in play therapy.”

And psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman agrees: “Taylor is a very sensitive and loving woman, who will undoubtedly feel guilt over Russell’s death, even though he was abusive,” she says. “Taylor and Kennedy should share their grief and begin psychotherapy as soon as possible to sort out their feelings and soothe their pain.”

We pray for Taylor and Kennedy and hope they can get through this tough time.

Page Six reported yesterday, July 18, that Stephanie Seymour, 42, called the cops on July 4 in Greenwich, Conn. after having a dispute with her 18-year-old son Peter Brant II, the same son she was pictured smooching on the beach in St. Barth’s in January. But is this completely unnecessary? Experts share their thoughts on mixing cops and kids!

Stephanie’s husband and Peter Jr.’s father Peter Brant Sr. witnessed the argument, which investigator Lt. Richard Cochran says “was all civil in nature.” When police responded, they were told the mother and son had argued because “the son was going to visit with the mom, and the mom canceled.” Hmm…

“People don’t usually call the police unless someone is a danger to themselves or to others,” Dr. Jenn Berman, author The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy Confident Kids tells HollyBaby.com. And Dr. Jeff Gardere, psychologist and contributor for healthguru.com, agrees.

“Only if that child becomes a danger to themselves or a danger to others should a parent call the cops,” Dr. Gardere tells HollyBaby.com. “They can do it if they [the child] are suicidal or threatened to kill in the house. She [Stephanie] could only have done that if she felt she could have been hurt.”

So was Peter a threat to Stephanie’s safety? Considering his father was there, we’re assuming not!

“Stephanie Seymour should have called a shrink instead of the cops!” Dr. Carole Lieberman, psychiatrist and author of Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets, tells us. “What does she expect after allowing her son Peter to think there were no boundaries between them, such that he could touch her breast inappropriately in front of photographers? Of course, Peter is going to be crushed when she cancels her ‘date’ with him. Both mother and son need to start family therapy as soon as possible before she scars his developing psyche even further.”

This all comes down to one simple question: Should Bristol Palin and Kate Gosselin be bashing their former men in the media and on national TV or should they keep their mouths shut? They are the fathers of their children after all!

First Kate goes on and on, slamming ex husband Jon Gosselin, claiming that he only sees their eight kids four days a month. “I do wish he would see them more, but that is what he has chosen,” Kate told Access Hollwood in early June. “The kids would like to see him more.”

And then today, June 27, on Good Morning America, Bristol bashed former fiance Levi Johnston, accusing him of “stealing” her virginity and abandoning their son, 2-year-old Tripp. She said, he “certainly (doesn’t see Tripp) as much as he’s entitled to,” adding, “I don’t know if Levi will be a big role model in his life at all. I’m not worried about it.”

Experts tell HollyBaby.com that these women are not only ruining their own reputations, but are hindering the self-esteem of their kids — even if they don’t know it. “It is horrendous to be bashing the reputation of the father of your child,” relationship expert Dr. Gilda Carle tells us. “The child needs to have a desire and
belief to be with daddy and doesnt need to have to apologize for wanting to have a bond with the father.”

“As they grow older, they will have their own opinion about daddy, but right now, this has a tendency of making them question who they are, why they were brought up in the world,” Dr. Carle adds. “These mothers, without knowing it are setting up
very poor self esteem in these children. And it only shows how insecure and uneducated they are.”

Dr. Carole Lieberman agrees, but believes that each of them are speaking out for different reasons. “Bristol Palin is still suffering heartbreak from Levi,” Dr. Lieberman, psychiatrist and author of Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them
and How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets, tells HollyBaby.com.

“When she bashes him in the media it is because she is still very hurt and angry. Especially since he seemed to want reconciliation with her and then it did not work. She wants to get back at him for breaking her heart.”

On the other hand: “When Kate bashes John in the media, her heart isn’t still breaking for him, but he has humiliated her in the media by dating one woman after another,” Dr. Lieberman adds. “She is getting revenge by bashing him.”

But still, both experts feel that Bristol and Kate should always keep their children in mind rather than themselves and the “fame” this might bring them. “People in the media should always keep in mind how what they do and say will impact the future of their children,” Dr. Lieberman concludes.

Experts tell us that Charlie is putting his twin boys at risk by allowing his young “goddesses” to babysit. Should Child Services step in? Can you imagine what’s going on in that house?

Just when we thought Charlie Sheen‘s situation couldn’t get any worse, it does. It seems like all he has time to do these days is appear on television and talk about his “war” with CBS and his “Adonis DNA.” But, who is watching his 1½-year-old twins Max and Bob, while Charlie is off shooting interviews and mommy Brooke Mueller, who lives in the house, is MIA? His two girlfriends and the “goddesses” of “Sober Valley Lodge,” porn star Bree Olson and “nanny” Natalie Kenley. Charlie says the two have “completed the three parts” of his heart. Wow.

“Natty and Charlie have their own special connection, I have my own connection with Charlie and then Natty and I also have our own relationship,” Bree, real name Rachel Oberlin, told ABC’s Good Morning America Tuesday morning (March 1), while Kenly added, “It seems crazy to everybody else, but for us it works.” Thank God Denise Richards is caring for Sam, 6, and Lola, 5.

“Charlie has a penchant for Barbies, who seem to clone themselves once they get near him,” psychiatrist, Dr. Carole Lieberman tells HollyBaby.com. “He needs to realize that his children aren’t toys and that they need mothers with maternal instincts – not basic instincts – to raise them!” Dr. Lieberman also tells us that porn stars aren’t necessarily bad mothers, but “it certainly is putting your children at risk by having such women as caretakers.”

Dr. Abbott believes that Charlie’s lack of appropriate boundaries — including his angry interviews, drug use, in-house rehab, and multiple sexual relationships — can lead to dangerous issues and behavior. “The children’s physical safety comes first,” she says. “His public behavior is the tip of the iceberg, so inside the house must be worse. What’s happening when the twins do what toddlers do?”

Both experts believe that child services should step in at this point. “If Brooke Mueller doesn’t step in to rescue their sons, Child Protective Services should start investigating,” Dr. Lieberman advises. And Dr. Abbott agrees.

“If a parent acknowledges severe drug use, loses his job, is participating in some sort of rehabilitation,” Dr. Abbott explains, “than that is ground for investigation to see if the children are being neglected.”

It seems that the latest parenting trend among mommies is a little thing called co-sleeping, when family members — that’s including you, Dad! — share the same bed. Many argue that this method, also referred to as the “family bed,” is a great bonding experience and wonderful for women who are nursing. But experts say kids should sleep in their own bed. Some parents disagree. Are you one of them?

Child psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman tells HollyBaby.com that it’s OK for kids to spend the night in their parents’ bed every now and then. “It’s all right once in a while, such as if a child has had a bad nightmare or a tummy ache, but even then this should be limited to children 4 to 5 years old or younger,” Dr. Lieberman says. “And it should not be allowed to become a habit.”

Celebrity parents like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, as well as Kourtney Kardashian practice co-sleeping and say that it is a wonderful family experience. “That means everybody crawls into our bed,” Angelina says of what the Jolie-Pitts call “family sleep.” “And we actually have a giant bed … Everybody flies in and we watch a movie. It breaks all the rules.”

The more accepted rule seems to be that parents can and should cuddle with their little ones in the early stages of life — also known as attachment parenting — as it forms a bond between parent and child. But once the kid hits a certain age, snuggles should be limited to before bedtime. “I have no problem with attachment parenting or co-sleeping,” Dr. Lawrence Shapiro tells the New York Post, “up until 18 months.”

What seems to be the bigger deal in this so-called sleeping arrangement is the effect it has on a marriage. “Usually it is the mom that wants to have a child in the bed, and dad doesn’t,” Dr. Shapiro says. “Some dads feel like they’re literally displaced.”

Dr. Lieberman tells HollyBaby.com that allowing your children to sleep alongside you and your husband too often could eventually cause major problems in your marriage. “It is extremely damaging for couples to allow their children to sleep in the marital bed,” she says. “Not only is this psychologically unhealthy for the children, but it is a symptom of problems in the couple’s relationship and it makes these problems worse. When a couple starts making excuses for why their child needs to sleep with them, it is really a cover up for one or both partners not wanting to be intimate with the other. It means there is trouble in paradise.”

Dealing with a teenage daughter isn’t exactly smooth sailing, but when you’ve got 18 kids? Forget about it! The stars of the TLC reality show Sister Wives – Kody Brown and his four wives (Meri, 39, Janelle, 40, Christine, 37, and Robyn, 31) — have got to be stretched to their limits keeping up with so many kids, but their problems with their rebellious teens have reportedly gotten a lot worse since the show’s premiere on TLC last month. “The daughters seem messed up from this situation,” a neighbor who lives near the Brown’s Lehi, Utah, home tells In Touch. “It is no wonder that the teenagers of the Sister Wives family are rebelling. They are living in a surreal world where they are being told that it’s natural and wonderful for a man to have several wives,” Beverly Hills celebrity psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman tells HollyBaby.com.

Other locals agree that the teenage members of the Brown brood have a tendency to rebel. Madison, a pretty brunette, has began running with a rough crowd of kids. “Her group of friends was caught popping pills in school,” says a source, adding that the 14-year-old tends to hang out with “Goths” and “druggies.” “Some nights she sneaks out to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, and her sisters Mykelti and Aspyn have covered for her.” HollyMoms, what would you do if your daughter started sneaking out and developing unhealthy habits?

Dr. Lieberman tells HollyBaby.com that she isn’t surprised that the kids are behaving badly and she’s placing blame on the parents. “The wives are in denial and are extremely damaging role-models for their daughters. They are teaching their daughters that they are not worth much, either — and that no man will love them,” she explains. “The daughters are being self-destructive because their mothers have thrust them into a soul-damaging lifestyle. Each additional wife stirs up jealousies and resentments, plunging them into darker despair.”

It looks like Mykelti, 13, is also following in her big sister’s footsteps. “She dyed her hair bright red a few weeks ago. It looks absolutely ridiculous,” says the neighbor, who is quick to point out that the teen goes out in public in short-shorts and sexy clothing, even in cold weather!

Are Kody and his wives hurting their kids?

Dr. Lieberman says this is a classic cry for attention. “The daughters’ rebellion is a cry for help, a plea to be noticed and recognized for their own feelings — which are really at odds with their family. They are being forced to pretend for the cameras that they love — or at least accept – living in a polygamous family. But, deep down they know that it is very sick.”

We suggest the Brown’s forget about another season of their reality show, kick the cameras out of their house and put the spotlight back on parenting. Do you agree?
