It seems like each new episode of True Blood reveals yet another traitor within the Vampire Authority, and that honor belonged to Russell (Denis O’Hare) on the Aug. 12 episode, as he formally gave his “f**k you” to Lilith and all of her brainless followers. He plans to go fairy hunting — Sookie (Anna Paquin) is obviously at the top of his menu — and synthesize the fae blood, just like the vampire scientists manufactured Tru Blood.

(Side note: I’d like to give special mention to the scene in which Russell and Steve [Michael McMillian] slow danced to “Teenage Dream,” surrounded by drained [dead?] frat guys. I love them.)

Eric (Alexander Skarsgard), on the other hand, appeared to draw closer to Lilith this week after another blood-induced trip. Sweet angel Godric appeared before Eric and Nora (Lucy Griffiths), only to have his sweet angel body ripped apart by the bloody nudist herself. But is Eric merely playing along? And where do Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) loyalties lie? He’s convincing, but I feel like he’s just going through the motions, waiting for a chance to strike.

And Russell isn’t the only vamp with a hunger for some fairy juice. Sookie found an ancient/vintage scroll under Gran’s bed and took it to Maurella — who is totally pregnant with Andy Bellefleur’s half-fairy baby, by the way! — so she could translate its ancient-ness into English. It turns out one of Sookie’s 18th-century ancestors promised the vampire Warlow he could have his first descendent with fairy blood. I bet Sookie’s really kicking herself for getting rid of her powers now! (Also: WTF, ancestor? That was a dick move.)

(Another side note: I hope you’re all paying attention to the many classic TV tricks being employed to hide Anna’s baby bump! Looser clothing, putting her behind counters, etc.)

Over at Fangtasia, Pam (Kristin Bauer Van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley) decided to rebel against the new vampire laws. Well, Tara actually did most of the rebelling: She and Ginger — who is an amazing treasure — teamed up to stake new-sheriff Elijah. Tara’s always been a “don’t take s**t” kind of girl, but somehow as a vampire, it’s more awesome and less obnoxious. I think I might love Tara now; I’m scared.

And now for the waterworks: Before Hoyt (Jim Parrack) shipped himself off to Alaska, Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) glamoured him to forget her and Jason (Ryan Kwanten). As if that wasn’t sad enough, Jason then pulled Hoyt over later that night and begged him to stay — but since Hoyt didn’t remember him anymore, he drove off. Then Jason delivered a super-uncomfortable crying scene, which only reinforces my belief that Jason scenes should be either sexual or hilarious. This show is already serious enough!

Things got really messy in Bon Temps on the July 8 episode of True Blood — and I’m not just talking about how Sookie (Anna Paquin) puked on Alcide (Joe Manganiello) right before they were about to have sex. Oh, and did I mention Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) were standing in Sook’s bedroom watching it all go down?

No, the real mess this week came courtesy of Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare), who Sookie & Co. managed to finally track down with a little help from her fairy powers — and a butt-load of alcohol. (Side note: Can Sookie be drunk all the time? She’s strangely likable when she’s liquored up.)

Of course, the question remains: Who really dug Russell up? By probing Alcide’s employee’s memory, Sookie could tell it was a female with an Authority pendant, making Nora (Lucy Griffiths) and Salomé (Valentina Cervi) the prime suspects. But couldn’t it also have been Chancellor Rosalyn (Carolyn Hennesy), or even — dare I type her name — Lillith, somehow?

That mystery will have to wait, along with an additional new puzzle: Will Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna (Janina Gavankar) survive another week? They were both gunned down by the same truck-load of rednecks who killed their shifter pals, and even though Emma went into baby wolf mode and ran away, the others’ fates remain in question. (Another side note: HBO should really think about selling baby Emma wolf plushies.)

Things also got pretty weird at Chez Lafayette, as our favorite fry cook (Nelsan Ellis) was paid a ghostly visit by ex-boyfriend Jesus (Kevin Alejandro). OK, technically it was only his head that paid LaLa a visit — but it also appeared before Lafayette’s mom Ruby (Alfre Woodard), so it’s got to mean something BIG is happening.

Moving on to something I’m only starting to care about, we finally learned that Terry (Todd Lowe) was cursed by an Iraqi woman right before he killed her, and now a fire-starting demon named Ifrit is coming after him and his buddies. And after seeing what Ifrit did to Eller — so much face-melting! — I don’t think Terry stands a chance, even with Scott Foley‘s all-powerful handsomeness by his side. (Third side note: As a fan of Charlaine Harris‘ original book series, I have to say this Ifrit story line is the most unnecessary addition to the season. I hope it starts to involve other people soon.)

But the real action this week went down at Fangtasia, as new bartender Tara (Rutina Wesley) continued adjusting to life as a vampire. She and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) appeared to be making nice, but things turned ugly when Jessica caught Tara feeding on Hoyt (Jim Parrack). Is there a special name for a vampire cat fight? Whatever you call it, it was awesome.

True Blood‘s fifth season premieres June 10 on HBO, which means we’re just 12 days away from finding out whether or not Tara (Rutina Wesley) survived that seemingly fatal gunshot to her head. We can only speculate until then, but this brand-new trailer gives us our biggest clue yet: A teary Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) tells Sookie (Anna Paquin), “You survived, you always do,” seeming to imply that someone else did not fare so well.

But when Sookie’s not mourning the loss of her best friend, she’s cowering in fear over the return of Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) — and by “cowering in fear,” I mean brushing it off with sassy one-liners.

It’s the question on everyone’s mind in Bon Temps: Who dug up Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare)? Was it Pam (Kristin Bauer Van Straten)? That’s certainly what Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) thinks in this brand-new clip from the fifth season of True Blood. I figured their maker-makee relationship would be strained this season after Pam’s little outburst about Sookie (Anna Paquin) on the finale, but I had no idea things would get this bad!

Five deaths, two disappointed vampires and one unsettling return added up to a seriously mind-blowing True Blood season finale. And while I predict a lot of fans have a bad taste in their mouth after the Sept. 11 episode, I loved every minute — and more importantly — every twist.

Let’s start with death number one: Jesus (Kevin Alejandro!) Still possessed by Marnie (Fiona Shaw), Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) knifed his brujo lover in order to absorb his freaky demonic powers. He then silver-chained Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) to a pyre, and while I won’t poo-poo the gratuitously shirtless eye candy, I’d rather our vamps not be on the brink of death for once.

Fortunately Sookie (Anna Paquin), Tara (Rutina Wesley) and Holly (Lauren Bowles) arrived to save the day! Taking advantage of Halloween’s natural magic, the trio busted out a spell to use their dead ancestors against Marnie. I never thought I’d see Sookie’s little Gran physically pull a human out of another human, but hey, anything goes on True Blood.

Once the madness died down — pun intended — it was time for Sookie to deal with what really matters in life: choosing between Bill and Eric! Using her head, for once, Sookie confessed that even though she loved both vampires, her best option was to let them both go and see what a single life has to offer her. (Personally, I think her best option would have been another threesome, but hey, I just want her to be happy.)

Meanwhile, far away from the chaos, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) had themselves a hot little Halloween. After coming clean to Hoyt (Jim Parrack), Jason was free to ravage Little Red Riding Hood to his heart’s content. After she left, Jason was visited by another familiar face — Steve Newlin! He’s back, and he’s a freakin’ vampire! (Sorry, did I say Jason was “far away from the chaos?” I guess I spoke too soon.)

Arlene (Carrie Preston) finally got her long-awaited visit from René this week, but it didn’t go quite as she expected. Instead of attacking her, or even mentioning one word about the baby they share together, he came to deliver a warning — about Terry (Todd Lowe)! He said he’s seen the ghosts of Terry’s past, and that she should run while she can. Hmm… Could this have anything to do with his old war buddy (Scott Foley) showing up in Bon Temps?

Nan Flanagan (Jessica Tuck) also met her untimely demise this week, surprisingly, at the hands of King Bill. She informed Bill and Eric that she quit her job and was planning to rebel against the Authority, joined by a faction of vampires who have been plotting a move for quite some time. But it was her calling them both “puppy dogs” for Sookie that drove them both over the edge. And as much as I loved Nan, I think Eric said it best while standing over her lifeless puddle. “What a bitch.”

Methinks we got a taste of what’s in store for season five — and I’m kind of terrified. Alcide (Joe Manganiello) was called to a parking garage, where he discovered someone had dug a huge hole in the ground. Why, you ask? Judging by the broken silver chain Alcide picked up, I’m going to go ahead and assume our buddy Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) is back. And he’s pissed. So hide your humans and hide your fairies! We’re all in for a whole lot of pain.

And then there was that last scene — the one every True Blood fan will be talking about until season five premieres next summer. Sookie came home to find a shotgun-wielding Debbie (Brit Morgan), who ended up blowing a hole in Tara’s head when she knocked Sookie out of the way. And despite the she-wolf’s plea for Sookie to spare her life, our little fairy grabbed that shotgun and finally blasted her in the face — another moment fans of the book have been patiently waiting for.

The sexy werewolf we have all been waiting for finally shows up in Bon Temps and Tara discovers the benefits of being with a vamp!

Well, as last week’s episode ended with a bullet being fired this week’s started with someone being shot – though not who we expected!

That’s right kids, in typical True Blood fashion it was Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and not the creepy werewolf waiting for Sookie (Anna Paquin) who took a bullet to the chest. Eric was however kind enough to then kill the intruder for Sookie, staining her rug with a rather large amount of blood in the process. Will this girl ever be able to keep that house clean?

Over in Mississippi a rather charred Lorena (Mariana Klaveno) is recovering from Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) aggressive greeting and seems to have forgiven him for his lack of manners. King Russell (Denis O’Hare) is still trying to woo Bill to pledge his allegiance and seems to be making headway, though the King’s suggestion Bill change Sookie seems to fall on deaf ears.

Now back again to Louisiana where Tara (Rutina Wesley) and Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) are having great things happen to them, but with horrible long term repercussions. You know what, ain’t nothing ever go right for those two — enjoy it while you can guys!

Tara met a man. Well, an undead man. Franklin (James Frain) is back and from the look on Tara’s face very, very good in the horizontal position. Come to think of it every vampire seems to be in said situation save Bill. Is Bill the worst vampire lover? We figure this is sort of a worst house on a super amazing block sort of thing anyway but we have never seen Sookie’s eyes literally roll back in her head. Oh, and that other thing Bill likes to do — but we’ll get into that later.

After their lovemaking it seems that Franklin may be pleasuring Tara for his own good when the pillow talk turns to Bill and Sookie. And once again Tara gets a crappy deal.

Lafayette meanwhile gets a fancy car from Eric that is literally nicer than his house. Like, maybe even nicer. But this is clearly good old Eric’s way of telling L-Bomb he is gonna have to start selling and pushing more V. If it means getting to hang out with Eric, we will gladly help.

Oh, Sam’s (Sam Trammell) white trash family comes by Merlotte’s and gets drunk and white trashy. Again kids, if you’re a shape shifter and looking to meet the family that abandoned you, probably not gonna be happy with that decision.

Also, Arlene’s (Carrie Preston) pregnant! Yayyy! Oh, but looks like boyfriend and all around greatest dude in Bon Temps Terry (Todd Lowe) is not the father. Sigh.

Now the episode’s most amazing part, brand new werewolf Alcide (Joe Manganiello). I mean, wow. He looks great, has a beard, wears plaid flannel, and hangs out at awesomely punny bars like Lou Pine’s.

Well, Alcide agrees to escort Sookie in her quest to find Bill where their first stop is the local wolfie watering hole — the aforementioned Pine’s — to get some dirt. Sookie, in typical Sookie tempting fate fashion, wears an all white, virginal look. She flirts, a wolf pounces, Alcide come to the rescue. This is shaping up to be a fun relationship.

The episode’s final scene however was just, I mean, it was not okay. I have heard the expression ‘I’m gonna wring your neck,’ I have just never seen someone do it. So watching Bill have angry sex with Lorena and then twist her neck 180 degrees left a bad taste in my mouth. Her’s too I’d assume from all the blood pouring out. Can these two call a truce now?
