The Utah Court of Appeal upheld the child abuse charges against Trevor Merrill and Echo Nielsen after their son Kayson Merill died in 2006 from suffocating in their bed, according to The Daily Mail. Their 24-day-old daughter died the SAME exact way in 2006, but they obviously didn’t learn!

The baby was put to sleep on his back, but found dead on his stomach. Too young to roll over himself, the infant stopped breathing. Because a daughter had died three years earlier from the same accident, judges ruled that she knew the risks.

The couple was charged with child-abuse homicide and reckless endangerment, and they plead not guilty.

“The allegation is these defendants had been told not to sleep with the child and chose to sleep with the child, and as a result the child is dead,” Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller told KSL.com. “Co-sleeping is a very dangerous thing to do. Many young parents are told this over and over again by their doctors, that they shouldn’t sleep with their child in the bed.”

Young children could mistake love making for fighting and sounds of pleasure for cries for help, according to child psychologists!

As more and more moms & dads choose to share their bed with their babies, they’re faced with a tricky decision — is it safe to have sex while your kids are asleep next to you?The answer is a resounding “NO”, say experts.

Child psychologist Dr. Gary Gelber warns the San Francisco Chronicle, “Children can misinterpret the sounds. Based on the sounds, children can think that the parents are actually hurting each other.”

Pediatrician and mom-of-three Dr. Lisa Dana agrees: “It does not seem appropriate to have sex in the family bed while a child is sleeping. I think parents and children are best served when they are more discreet about this healthy adult behavior.”

Researchers have discovered moms and dads who share a bed with their babies aren’t stunting their development and social skills!

Parents have been warned for years against letting their children into their beds, but research shows there are no harmful effects — as long as you wait until your baby is a year old.

Besides the dangers of accidental injury and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) it’s been suggested in the past that co-sleeping stunts kids’ social skills.

But researchers at New York’s Stony Brook University have blown the lid off that theory. They examined nearly a thousand moms with kids aged between one and three and found almost a half admitted to sharing their bed with their child. When the kids were studied at the age of five, there was no difference between the children that had slept alongside their mothers than those that had slept apart.

Stony Brook University professor Dr. Lauren Hale concludes, “Parents can do what works best for their family and not feel guilty if they choose to bed-share, because there probably aren’t lasting impacts.”
