Just when I thought I had The Lying Game all figured out, the March 12 spring finale proved there’s no telling what’s going to happen next in Phoenix. Though we still don’t have a definitive answer about who killed Derek and Theresa, a surprising — and seemingly guilty — party emerged as a new suspect this week. Are you ready? It’s kind of a doozy…

Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

It’s Thayer (Christian Alexander)! Yes, shortly after Emma (Alexandra Chando) stomped on his heart — I’ll get to that later, I promise — he pulled a crowbar out of his couch and wreaked havoc on his bedroom, ending the episode looking at a shattered picture of Emma.

Is that the same crowbar he used to kill Derek? Is Emma going to be his next target? I’m having major flashbacks to the time Toby was revealed as “A” on Pretty Little Liars and I’m not liking it. Not one little bit!

Emma (Finally) Chooses Between Ethan & Thayer

After a season and a half of emotional ping-ponging, Emma finally chose between the two men in her life. Thayer forced her to make a decision, but unfortunately for him, she chose Ethan (Blair Redford). “It’s always been you,” she told him.

Sadly, nothing is ever that easy on The Lying Game. Ethan told her things had become too complicated between her and his family, and that they couldn’t be together.

Rebecca Skips Town — Or Does She?

When the police found Rebecca’s (Charisma Carpenter) necklace at the scene of Theresa’s murder, everyone assumed the case was closed. But a quick phone call from Alec (Adrian Pasdar) warned Becky about the impending danger, and she managed to disappear before they searched her house.

She rendezvoused with Jordan (Ryan Rottman) at the airport, and when he refused to go with her, she threatened to tell the authorities what he did “to his brother in Los Angeles.” (What brother? What did he do? What’s happening?!) All those questions were answered when the police arrested Jordan for killing his brother. All right, maybe they weren’t answered, but at least they were a little more fleshed out.

Is Alec Dead, Too?

Remember when I said Rebecca skipped town? I wasn’t the only person who thought she did. Rebecca surprised Alec by meeting him on the roof during Theresa’s memorial, and after telling him she suspected Thayer was the killer, she pushed him into the skylight! He fell with a mighty thud — seriously, his power of flight from Heroes would have come in handy — and was left bleeding on the ground.

But is he really dead?

As if Emma (Alexandra Chando) didn’t already have enough on her plate, trying to figure out who killed Theresa and Derek, the secret twin will face another challenge on the March 12 spring finale of The Lying Game: having to choose between Ethan (Blair Redford) and Thayer (Christian Alexander)!

Emma’s been going back and forth between the two guys — sensitive Thayer and hot-headed Ethan — since the series began in Aug. 2011, but the love triangle reached critical mass in season two when a newly single Emma took her relationship with Thayer to the next level. (You know, sex!)

I recently chatted with The Lying Game Executive Producer Chuck Pratt Jr., who confirmed we can expect “fireworks” between Emma, Ethan and Thayer for a  while.

“That’s not a triangle that’s going to go away overnight,” he told me.

More ‘Lying Game’ Spring Finale Spoilers

Along with Emma’s big decision — and the potential reveal of Derek and Theresa’s killer — Chuck told me to expect a “fantastic” cliffhanger that involves every single character.

“Everyone will be screaming for a resolution,” he told me. “I use the term ‘colliding trains’ as a narrative device — the idea being that all the trains on all the tracks come together and collide — and that’s how we choreographed this cliffhanger. They may not all be in the same room, but it all comes together.”

It’s official, I’ve got chills.

After a night of uninhibited passion, Ethan (Blair Redford) told Sutton (Alexandra Chando) those magical words every girl dreams of hearing from the guy she loves: “Sorry, this was a mistake. It’ll never happen again.” Oh, Ethan — you’re such a romantic! Of course, this is The Lying Game we’re talking about, so there were plenty more awkward moments to come.

In fact, let’s run down all the uncomfortable interactions from the Jan. 22 episode, shall we?

1. Laurel (Allie Gonino) invited Mads (Alice Greczyn) to tag along on her date with Jordan (Ryan Rottman), unaware that the step-siblings slept together on the season premiere.

2. Emma agreed to tutor Ethan, unaware he’d just slept with Sutton the night before.

3. Thayer (Christian Alexander) walked in on Ethan hugging Emma.

4. Laurel caught Mads and Jordan kissing, once again unaware of their creepy incestuous past.

Meanwhile, Thayer’s plan to prove Alec (Adrian Pasdar) killed Derek totally backfired, resulting in Alec’s release. And while Thayer was bummed, no one was more uneasy than Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter), who was overheard talking to the person who called Jessica Whitman and had her plant the tire iron in Alec’s bag!

As one last knife in Emma’s heart, Thayer decided to pack his bags and go back to Los Angeles, as there’s “nothing left” for him in Scottsdale. So just when Emma and Thayer finally gave into their feelings for one another, they were tragically ripped apart once again.

And things are sure to get even crazier from here! Sutton beat Emma in a tennis match, which meant they had to switch places again. With Emma stuck in that cabin all alone, I can only imagine the hell Sutton will raise in town…

The Lying Game is brilliantly complicated for so many reasons, but my favorite harrowing task is trying to tell when Alexandra Chando is playing good-twin Emma or not-so-good-twin Sutton just by looking at a photo. That inner struggle has never been more prevelant than in this shot from the Jan. 15 episode, in which one of the twins is seen swapping spit with Thayer (Christian Alexander)!

We know Thayer has a complicated history with both twins — he slept with Sutton in Los Angeles, then returned to Arizona with feelings for Emma — but it looks like it’s going to get even more complicated in season two.

And make that double once Ethan (Blair Redford) catches wind of their shenanigans!

Alexandra Chando Weighs In On ‘The Lying Game’ Love Square:

“It’s fun for me, that’s for sure,” Alexandra told HollywoodLife.com at ABC Family’s Winter Wonderland event Dec. 2 in NYC. “I get to work with Blair, and Christian Alexander, who’s also fantastic. It’s interesting because they keep getting wrapped up in each other.”

But Alexandra’s next comment leads me to believe that it’s Emma, and not Sutton, kissing Thayer in the above photo.

“I think you’ll see a little more of Thayer and Emma, which I think a lot of the fans are excited about,” Alexandra revealed. “I’ve been seeing on my Twitter that they’re so excited about Thayer and Emma.”

The Lying Game returns for its second season Jan. 8 at 9 p.m. on ABC Family.

While Sutton (Alexandra Chando) remained a captive in the same mental hospital as her mother, Eduardo (Rick Malambri) was in dire condition after his car “accident.” To make things even more complicated, Thayer (Christian Alexander) decided to stick around and look out for Mads (Alice Greczyn), while Laurel (Allie Gonino) became desperate to lose her virginity to squatter boyfriend Justin (Randy Wayne.)

Then there’s Emma, who still mad at Ethan (Blair Redford) this week for overreacting to Sutton’s little sleepovers with Thayer — and Ethan punching Thayer was the last straw for Emma. She’s positive he’s still in love with Sutton!

Mads and Char (Kirsten Prout) became convinced there was something going on between Sutton and Eduardo, and their anger only increased after thinking Emma-as-Sutton also slept with Thayer. And speaking of mistaken identity, Sutton was accused of being Emma at the mental ward because, to be fair, she was in possession of Emma’s driver’s license. No one believed her when she tried to explain herself.

She did get meet their mom, Annie Hobbes, Only to have the woman claim that both her little girls died and to dismiss Sutton as merely a hallucination. The police then arrested Sutton for the Emma’s prior charge. (Remember that money she stole at the beginning of the season?)

Back in Phoenix, the Mercers discovered Justin and Laurel in bed together — so bad! — and Emma’s creepy foster brother Travis (Kenneth Miller) showed up at the Mercers’ house!

I think Alec (Adrian Pasdar) somehow caused the car accident. He hasn’t outright admitted to it, but he’s so slimy and possessive that I wouldn’t put it past him. Also, where is Thayer and Mads’ mom? The writers haven’t explained her absence yet, so far as I can remember — and it’s sort of suspicious.

I don’t blame Laurel for wanting to sleep with Justin. He is her boyfriend and he seems like a good guy, even if he did at first lie about his past. I thought her whole set-up for the big night was pretty cheesy, though. If I were him, that nightie and those candles would have turned me off! I wonder what the Mercers are going to think of him next episode after finding out his living situation.

As for Emma, she has a right to be mad at Ethan. He totally overreacted! I feel like half of his character growth consists of hitting people. He’s definitely slipping as a likeable character for me.

And Mads and Char are also justified in being angry with Emma-as-Sutton, since it is safe to assume she lied to their faces about sleeping with Thayer. I really think Emma should just tell them the truth about who she is. That would spare everyone so much pain — and time!

Alec was definitely involved in making Annie think that her daughters died. It was so sad when she refused to speak to Sutton! I hope the twins resolve matters with their mom in a later episode and that Sutton and Emma both end up all right. Emma should just say Travis is an intruder and have him taken away, since I doubt the Mercers will tolerate hearing the twin story — especially if it comes from some random boy.

On the Sept. 12 episode of The Lying Game, Emma (Alexandra Chando) decided not to go to homecoming because Laurel (Allie Gonino) was grounded, but ended up changing her mind when Char (Kirsten Prout) and Mads (Alice Greczyn) forced her to run for queen. And because Emma is such a good person, she convinced the Mercers to let Laurel go to the dance with Justin (Randy Wayne.) But the evening took an interesting turn when Emma discovered a picture of Mr. Mercer, Mr. Rybeck, and the twins’ birth mom from high school — together!

Meanwhile, Nisha (Sharon Pierre-Louis) revealed to Mr. Rybak that Eduardo (Rick Malambri) and Mads kissed, but got thrown off her pedestal when she lost her queendom to Emma. In two climactic ending scenes, Emma kissed Ethan (Blair Redford) in front of the entire school and we saw a shot of the twins’ mom in a hospital room painting a picture of a night sky — and two little girls.

I thought Emma handled the whole homecoming problem very well, as she successfully made everyone happy — even Ethan. I totally give her props for that. Sutton, on the other hand, is being so immature. She asked Emma to pretend to be her, so she had no right to be angry with Emma when she ran for homecoming queen, or even when she made out with her boyfriend. Emma’s just following orders — from a girl she barely knows, no less.

Sutton’s also abusing her relationship with Thayer (Christian Alexander) by kissing him out of envy. She’s already been awful to Ethan by not telling her friends about him. I’m surprised he could stand that kind of behavior for so long. She’s so catty!

As usual, Mr. Rybak is being a freak. He’s so possessive of Mads, and I hope Eduardo tells her everything he heard when he was hiding in her closet! He really gives me the chills whenever he’s on screen or even when he speaks. (Such a creeper!) I thought it was weird he didn’t chastise Eduardo after receiving the picture. I guess he has some secret up his sleeve that he wants Eduardo to be part of.

And after seeing the secret picture, I’m really starting to think Mr. Rybak is Sutton and Emma’s dad. He seemed to be pretty friendly with Annie Hobbs in the photo, and maybe he’s trying to keep some scandal from leaking out. Obviously, that can’t be the whole mystery but that idea may be the start of something bigger. I’m also getting more curious about what The Lying Game actually is.

That’s the title, but we’re on the fifth episode and it still hasn’t been explained.
