Since she’s the one who cast and directed them in the first Twilight film, Catherine Hardwicke is essentially responsible for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson‘s love affair. However, the outspoken director recently admitted she had guilt about breaking up Kristen, 21, and her longtime boyfriend, Michael Angarano.

“He’s a wonderful actor. He was in Dogtown, one of my favorites, so I felt pretty bad because I love him and they were such a great couple,” Catherine told Vulture at Sundance this year.

Although we doubt she would change the outcome of her Twilight casting, we can’t help but wonder if Catherine was throwing a dig to Rob. Do they actually not get along?

We’ve heard this before, but honestly, we never get tired of hearing it: Robert Pattinson has always been in love with Kristen Stewart! “He was nervous,” Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke recalls during a chat with Young Hollywood at Sundance. “I know he really liked Kristen. I think he [had always had a crush.]“

Catherine says she invited Rob to audition at her house to help calm his nerves, and believe it or not, no one expected the movie to blow up into a global phenomenon.

“The weekend before it opened, they were telling me, ‘Maybe it’s only 400 girls in Salt Lake City… texting,’” Catherine says.

Well, that was a slight underestimate.

Catherine Hardwicke directed the original Twilight movie, which of course was the beginning of what is now an internationally popular enterprise. But as many Twi-hards know, it was a struggle to make the film in the first place. Catherine spoke out about the difficulties she encountered while accepting an Inspiration Award from the Step Up Women’s Network organization on Friday. Nikki Reed was on hand to present Catherine with her trophy, and they both sang each other’s praises from the stage.

Nikki and Catherine sat at tables next to each other and both mentioned they were nervous to get on stage in front of such a large crowd. Nikki brought fluorescent orange index cards with her and chatted about meeting Catherine when she was five years old and the director was dating her father. She said she was hoping Catherine would look like a mermaid with blue hair and was disappointed when she found she didn’t and thought that made her “boring” although she soon learned that was far from the case. Catherine came up on stage and thanked Nikki, saying how great it was to watch Nikki grow into herself and become more confident as she grew up.

Catherine counseled the young women in the mentorship program, targeted at helping high school women in high-crime areas graduate high school. In fact, this year, every girl in the Step Up program graduated high school and is going to college! Catherine spoke about bringing the girls to her house and showing them where Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart first auditioned for the movie. She mentioned how difficult it was to get Twilight made since it had a female protagonist and was told from her point of view, and she mentioned that studios were worried “only sixty girls in Salt Lake City” would watch the film.

She spoke about hoping women get more recognition as directors, especially since less than 10% of directors in Hollywood are female. Catherine said she was proud of Twilight’s success with a female protagonist and lead actress, and female director. She also pointed out that although the movie has surpassed everyone’s expectations, the directors for the next four movies are male.

‘Twilight’ director Catherine Hardwicke is ready to put the iconic furniture up for auction — would you invest?

Twilight director Catherine Harwicke was recognized at the June 10 Step Up Women’s Network Inspiration Awards, and she announced an incredible opportunity for fans to own a VERY intimate part of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart‘s life!

Catherine said she still has the bed Rob and K-Stew first kissed on when they were rehearsing scenes at her house for the iconic first film in the series. And Catherine said she might put the bed up for auction to help Step Up Women’s Network if there was enough demand from fans — and we’re sure it would generate plenty of interest amongst the Twihards!

Also, the charity is a great cause, offering children in high-crime areas the chance to graduate high school and go off to college!

The director of the original ‘Twilight’ can’t choose her favorite smooch — can YOU?

Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are both nominated in the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ‘Best Kiss’ category for their smooches Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and while fans are divided as to who had the hottest kiss, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke just can’t decide!

“Maybe it can be a tie? That would be perfect! I think [that's] the safest solution to this problem,” she tells MTV.

She says fans’ passion toward the source material help keep their kissing a phenomenon.

“I love it that people are so passionate about it and that people are really into it and following the characters,” she said. “I think it’s a great tribute, obviously, to what [author] Stephenie Meyer created. Rob and Kristen and everybody’s been able to just keep it going and keep people loving it all this time, and, of course, all the directors, everybody. I think it’s awesome. It’s great.”

The director of ‘Twilight’ says her young stars were enamored from the beginning, but she warned Rob against getting with teenager Kristen!

It appears that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart really were fated to be together — they fell in love the moment they met! Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke told Newsweek, ‘”Kristen] felt connected to [Rob] from the first moment. That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is.” Awwwww!

Catherine, whose new film Little Red Riding Hood opens next week, warned Rob to be careful however. “You’ve got to realize that Kristen is 17 years old,” she told him. “She’s underage. You’ve got to focus, dude, or you’re going to be arrested. I made him swear on a stack of Bibles.”

Luckily, Rob was able to wait a bit and now they are the happy couple America loves!

Drew Barrymore, do you have what it takes to make Breaking Dawn ? Twilight series starlet Christian Serratos, 19, thinks you’re the perfect person to whip the fourth of Stephenie Meyer’s cult teen classics into shape on the big screen.

“There was a lot of talk about Drew directing [Twilight Saga: Eclipse],” Christian, who plays Bella Swan’s bestie Angela Weber, told HollywoodLife.com exclusively at Think PR’s Pre-Sundance Gifting Suite at the W Los Angeles Jan. 13. “I think it would be cool if she directed the next one. I feel like [producers] have been picking really great people, and somehow every director they pick somehow magically matched the book and the movie they were directing.”

Catherine Hardwicke was definitely the right choice to bring out edgy teenage angst in Twilight, while Chris Weitz brought some flash to New Moon. The jury’s still out on Eclipse’s David Slade, though (but pre-buzz says he’s fierce).

Is Drew the right gal for the job? The kooky 34-year-old actress just killed it with her 2009 directorial debut, Whip It! And she’s certainly no stranger to controversial sex scenes (hello, she even starred in a movie called Freddy Got Fingered!) so Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart making sweet, sweet vampire love onscreen would be a breeze.
