Canadian royalty Nina Dobrev was back on her home turf Sept. 27, co-hosting Free the Children’s annual We Day event with Joe Jonas. But The Vampire Diaries star didn’t just smile and look pretty for the cameras; she also presented her original design for a t-shirt whose proceeds will go to feed 6,500 kids currently attending school in Kenya.

“No one should go hungry because, quite frankly, hunger bites,” she told the screaming crowd in Toronto. “And I’m not just saying that because I’m on a vampire show.”

Earlier in the day, Nina’s Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder sent his well wishes for Nina on her big day:

“Break a leg Nina!” Ian tweeted. “You Canadians are so smart,I wish we had a Me to We day in the USA.”

Cathleen Hachey, 20, from New Brunswick, Canada was introduced to a British couple on Surrogate Mothers Online, met them in November, signed a surrogacy contract and talked to them every day for six months. Everything was going smoothly until Cathleen, who had just discovered she was carrying twins, got a text message from the intended mother saying she and her husband split up and that she wasn’t ready to be a single mother. Now, Cathleen, who has two children of her own, was left to decide whether to keep the babies or give them up for adoption.

In the contract, the couple declared that they were the child’s (children’s) legal parents and granted Cathleen $200 per month for pregnancy-related expenses. Due to the wife’s battle with polycystic ovarian syndrome, they also agreed that Cathleen would be a traditional surrogate vs. a gestational surrogate, which means she would use her own egg and the husband’s sperm to conceive. So in fact, the twins she was left with were her biological children and not those of the “legal” mother.

When a 27-weeks-pregnant Cathleen got the dreaded text message saying that the deal was off, she was absolutely shocked. “It said she mentally couldn’t handle herself right now,” Cathleen recalls, “so she didn’t think she could handle two other human beings.”

“They were my biological children so they were my biological problem,” Cathleen tells The Toronto Star. But instead of raising them herself, she eventually found a couple in Nova Scotia who was thrilled to adopt them. Thank God!

This story raises many red flags about the Canadian surrogacy laws and how easily they can be disregarded. These parents abandoned their children via text message! How sick is that? We’re just happy the twins found a loving home and Cathleen found the strength to make sure she made the right decision.

Interestingly enough, this incident hasn’t turned Cathleen off of surrogacy — she plans on carrying another couple’s child in January!

The plane, dubbed Airbus 001—it’s akin to the U.S.’s Air Force One—was originally constructed in the 1980s and then subsequently purchased from now defunct-Canadian Airlines in 1993. And, get this: It’s barely been renovated! In fact, the regular passenger seats in the back of the aircraft even have ashtrays in the armrests!

According to Canada.com, the newlyweds “are making do with two small rooms, the size of a tiny den, set up the saw way as when Prime Minister Stephen Harper is onboard.”

The room where the newlyweds are spending most of their time contains two couches that can be converted into beds and a small, 14-inch TV on which to watch DVDs. The other room, dubbed “the state room,” is an office with four business class seats, a desk, and a couch that seats three people.

Lt.-Col. Andy Cook, the plan’s pilot, says William and Kate nearly never leave the confines of their room. “The amount of pressure and the amount of people who are always watching the Prince and the Duchess at all times, I think our two tiny rooms in this aircraft are a real haven for them. I tell you when they walk on the airplane, they go in there and the door closes and except for one steward that serves them personally—if they want a coffee or something like that—they are on their own. And they are no longer the Duke and Duchess and they are just a newly married couple.”

Then there’s a small standard airline restroom that can be connected to another restroom that was converted into a small shower. “We only connect the shower when we have VIP trips,” Cook said.

He adds, “That’s all it is…[It's] not palatial by any stretch of the imagination. Very comfortable but it is certainly not palatial.”

Following their three-hour, open-fire-cooked dinner on a tiny island in the Northwest Territories on Tuesday, they followed suit on Wednesday evening by checking into the remote and rustic Skoki Lodge, located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, that lacks running water and electricity!

And getting to the lodge is no easy feat: Only one road leads to the lodge, and most guests hike or horseback ride to it during the summer. As for William and Kate, they flew on Wednesday from Slave Lake—the Alberta town they toured that had been ravaged by wildfires—to Calgary’s International Airport on a small jet, and they were then whisked away to a waiting military chopper that took them to the lodge.

The lodge, constructed in 1931 and built largely from wooden logs, is located about seven miles from Lake Louise, a picturesque destination marked by its namesake stunning crystal blue lake, breathtaking mountain ridges, valleys, and alpine flowers.

While the area is simply stunning and the lodge’s quaint charm makes it a must-stay for privacy-seeking couples,  it’s not the most modern of facilities: According to the lodge’s Web site, “There is no electricity or running water, warm wash water is always available…Heat is maintained by woodstoves, coal stoves or propane heaters. Lighting is with kerosene lamps and outhouses for toilet facilities.”

Outhouses? Woodstoves? Fear not, William and Kate didn’t exactly slum it: The lodge’s owners modernized a cabin in anticipation of the newlyweds’ visit. According to the Calgary Sun, “Special preparations were done for the royal guests…they retrofitted a cabin, complete with a bathroom, tub and all, and flew it to the spot in two seperate parts.”

The newlyweds are expected to arrive back in Calgary at 4:30 pm MST/6:30 pm EST on Thursday, where they will be greeted by dignitaries at the airport, and presented with white cowboy hats. On Friday, they’ll then head to Los Angeles.

The handsome royal heir whisked his new bride, Kate, to a remote island in the Northwest Territories Tuesday—via canoe!—and spent three hours on the island without their security team. Plus, the getaway on Eagle Island—dubbed “Honeymoon Island” by locals—was all planned by William!

The newlyweds left from Blachford Lake Lodge via canoe to Eagle Island, with just a local guide in tow; their security detail stayed back on the nearby mainland.

While on the island—which boasts about two-dozen small pine trees and a white sand beach—they supped on a meal prepared by the Blachford Lake Lodge’s chef. And it was all cooked on an open campfire! “There isn’t much on the island, but one of our chefs has prepared a meal of local cranberries, bannock bread and caribou as well as some white fish,” said Paul Freeland, who owns the lodge with his wife Tessa Macintosh.

The island is particularly romantic since it enjoys what’s known as “midnight sunset”—the sun is almost always visible during this time of the year because of its northern location, so the sun sets very briefly around dusk.

Macintosh said she and her husband spent their 1991 honeymoon night on the island. “Its real name is Eagle Island, but ever since my wedding night we’ve called it Honeymoon Island,’ she said. “When I was taken there I thought my new husband was the most romantic man on earth. I’m sure that is just how Kate must feel now.”
