Hadley Barrows was thrown out of a Minnesota library by a security officer for breastfeeding her son — how awful!

Barrows was discreetly nursing her son on a bench at the Minneapolis Central Library when she was approached by a security officer. “He said I was either gonna have to take it outside or go in the bathroom,” Barrows told WCCO-TV. The officer referred to Barrows’ breastfeeding as “indecent exposure.”

Confused and embarrassed, Barrows went to question the librarian who also told her she needed to move somewhere more private. The security officer consulted a county police officer about the law. The police officer told him that there was no reason for her to be asked to move and “she could breastfeed wherever she needed to.”

According to Minnesota state law, a mother can breastfeed her child in any private or public location. Because of all the confusion, the library decided to use the incident as a “teaching moment” and sent a memo to all of their staff outlining the laws.

Barrows explained, “There are enough obstacles to nursing as it is without having people make you feel like a criminal for doing it.”

With plenty of new moms ‘fessing to the benefits of breastfeeding (we’re looking at you, Alanis Morissette) it comes to a surprise that while the majority of women hope to breastfeed, very few succeed in their goal.

According to a report from the Daily Mail the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention interviewed 1,500 pregnant women about how they planned to feed their newborn, then followed up each month for the next year.

The study revealed that 85 percent of new mothers intended to breastfeed for the first three months but many gave up, with only 15 percent of babies who are six-months-old still being nursed.

The study came from a “breast is best” campaign that’s pushing to ban hospitals from giving free baby formula to new mothers.

Breastfeeding is known to have a wide range of benefits from reducing obesity to boosting immunity, and doctors recommend that babies get breastfed until they are six-months old.

Here we go again, it’s another breastfeeding photo that’s sparking massive controversy. This time it’s a picture of of two Air Force soldiers Terran Echegoyen McCabe and Christina Luna breastfeeding their children.

According to the Huffington Post, there are 11 things you CAN’T do while wearing your military uniform, including eating or talking on a cell phone while walking (fine while standing still), keeping your hands in your pockets, chewing gum, holding hands, kissing and hugging (except during homecomings and deployments). Soldiers should always have their right hand free so they can salute at any time.

Breastfeeding is nowhere on the list.

Terran (on the left) told TODAY that she nurses her 10-month-old twin daughters in uniform all the time, “in our lobby, in my car, in the park.”

She says she’s proud to be wearing a uniform while breastfeeding and hopes it encourages other women to breastfeed while on active duty, on guard or as a civilian.

The moms have been both slammed and praised.

On the official Mom2Mom Breastfeeding Support Group Facebook page where the photo was posted, one commenter wrote: ”If one cannot chew gum, walk & talk on a mobile phone, or have large exposed tattoos, then what makes it OK to breastfeed in uniform out in the open? It does not matter what service you are in, if you are a breastfeeding mother and will not or cannot uphold that professional image, then get the hell out of the military..”

On the other hand, another commenter is in full support: “I’m so proud of them for standing up for breastfeeding and not being afraid to feed their babies in public and in uniform!”

The former ‘Girl Next Door,’ admits that when her boobs ‘leaked’ at parties, she’d go in the bathroom and breastfeed herself!

I don’t know if this is normal for mommies, but it doesn’t sound normal. Kendra Wilkinson, 26, who has a 21-month-old son Hank Jr. with footballer hubby Hank Baskett, admits that when she was out at parties while she was still breastfeeding, she’d nurse HERSELF so her boobs would stop leaking! Totally weird or totally fine?

“My first party after giving birth to Hank, I went to Eve nightclub in Vegas and my boobs started leaking,” a laughing Kendra tells Baby Zone. “I couldn’t do anything so I breastfed myself. And it tasted sweet, too!” Ew!

“We have a lot of personality in our family and we love each other so much. We can talk smack to each other and laugh about it and have fun with it,” she shares, adding that Hank Jr. is “getting that too.”

“Don’t take everything so seriously,” is Kendra’s motto for motherhood. “If Hank cries for two hours, I’m going to laugh at him for two hours because he’s turning 2!”

In a new blog post for kveller.com, Mayim Bialik, 35, who best known for starring in Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, admits it may finally be time to start weaning her three-year-old son Fred. Yeah, we’d say so!

Mayim, who also has a six-year-old son Miles, believes in child-led weaning and although she never thought she would be breastfeeding a three-year-old, she doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with it — actually she enjoys it!

“I have written about my now 3-year-old son Fred, and his nursing rhythms before,” Mayim wrote on kveller.com. “To recap: Fred nursed for a solid 12 months with no supplements, no solid foods, and not even a sip of water. He got the hang of eating solids around 18 months, but continued to nurse all day (with bottles of pumped breastmilk when I was at work), and on demand all night. A typical night involved no less than four wake-ups and sometimes six (every 2 hours on the clock for 12 hours of bed time was not unusual). This went on for almost 3 years.”

Chrissy Houtz of Huron County, Ohio, says that she was breastfeeding her 1-year-old son at the Norwalk City Pool when other families began complaining to the pool management. Oddly enough, Chrissy faced the same problem last summer and she was told by city officials that she had the right to nurse in public and that pool employees would comply. So, what happened?

Lifeguard Allison Loden tells Fox 8,”They [pool goers] felt it was disgusting and that they didn’t really want to have their children exposed to that.”

That’s when Chrissy reminded the pool employees of her rights, “Under Ohio law, federal law, my rights and his rights are protected,” she explains. “We are able to nurse wherever and whenever he wants to.”

Chrissy has discussed the issue with Norwalk Law Director Stuart O’Hara, who is now investigating legal protections on breastfeeding in public. He says it’s about, “balance between the competing interests of the breastfeeding mother and other patrons of the aquatic center who are offended by that type of activity.”
