Imagine sharing a mind with another person. Well, that’s exactly what Krista and Tatiana Hogan of Vernon, British Columbia experience in real-life. In a bizarre yet incredible medical miracle, the conjoined twins, 4, are effectively able to see through one another’s eyes and taste what the other one is eating, while still having different personalities! Mind-blowing, right?

“It’s like they are one and two people at the same time,” Todd Feinberg, the professor of psychiatry and neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine tells the New York Times.

Their neurosurgeon, Douglas Cochrane of British Columbia Children’s Hospital, has discovered the unique link – which shows up on brain scans as a line between the two girls’ brains – as a ‘thalamic bridge’. Krista and Tatiana suffer from craniopagus, meaning their skulls are fused together, which affects one out of 2.5 million twins.

Their mother Felicia Simms, 26, says there are many instances that occur between her girls that prove there is a unique neural link between them. When one twin covers her eyes, she can see what her sister is seeing and if one girl sucks on a pacifier or her thumb to calm down, the other relaxes as well (without sucking on her own binky!). INCREDIBLE!

“When they are playing, one of the girls will reach over and grab something from her sister’s side and know exactly where it is without possibly being able to see it,” Felicia explains to the New York Times, “It’s absolutely awesome to watch them sometimes because there’s no way she can see the toy she is reaching for and it’s just incredible.”

In one incident, Krista, who relies on her Tatiana’s kidney and heart, and is the bossier of the two, picked up her juice and said, “I am drinking really, really, really, really fast,” the Times reports. Then suddenly Tatiana opened her eyes wide, held her stomach and said ‘Whoa!’

Dr. Feinberg said he was astonished at their shared sensory experience. “Now, how crazy is that? I mean, seriously! This is beyond empathy – it’s like a metasensory experience. It’s like she has one consciousness and can witness another’s.”

Although the girls are too young to get advanced scans, neuroscientists say the tests they have undergone describe them as “ridiculously compelling.” And it doesn’t surprise their mom.

“If one of the girls is hurt, the other can feel it,” Felicia says, “and if you discipline one the other will also cry.” But she adds that they are just like any other little girls. “They’re two normal little girls who happen to go through life sharing a bubble.”
