Rafael Cennamo Couture Fall 2013: Opulent Gold Nails — Get The Look

For Rafael Cennamo’s luxurious presentation, striking nail polish shades were custom made by designer nail brand Zoya. Cennamo himself collaborated with the team of color experts at Zoya for this collection. Together, they created a gilded topcoat called “Maria Luisa,” which gave each model’s manicure a one-of-a-kind glow. The topcoat alone was used on the models’ toenails, creating a clear gold lucite effect. Over darker nail polishes, the Maria Luisa shade gave the effect of a gold fireworks explosion against a dark night sky. Over gold nail polishes, the topcoat completely enhanced the yellow undertones for a full on bling.

To try a similar look yourself, try painting your nails with Zoya Professional Lacquer in Goldie. This high-shine metallic gold will give you a dramatic sheen in just one coat.

Bobbi Brown makeup was used at the Rafael Cennamo presentation. Feathery false lashes atop dusty slate gray lids gave the models a powerful edgy look. To go beyond your traditional smokey eye, extend your shadow almost up to your brows for an over-the-top edge. Some models were even equipped with gold metal eyebrows — talk about fierce!

Lacquered red lips were a bold contrast against the metallic gold collection. This lip look worked because the high-gloss shine matched the intensity of the twinkly mixed-metals. This flattering shade goes just as well with a couture gown as it does with a simple makeup look and toned down outfit.

The makeup queen has released a new book called Beauty Rules about makeup and skincare for teens and twentysomethings, but she says it’s important to set some ground rules for your tweens when they start packing on the lip gloss, eyeliner and mascara.

Do you think that young girls are starting to wear makeup earlier and earlier? Well, you’re not the only one. Suri Cruise, who’s 4, even totes her own makeup bag! Celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown addresses the situation in Beauty Rules, her newest makeup and skincare guide targeted toward teens and twentysomethings like Hilary Duff, who wrote the forward to the book. I sat down with Bobbi to get her thoughts on teens, tweens and makeup and asked her the question on all moms’ lips: How young is too young to wear makeup?

How old should girls be when they start wearing makeup?
I was about 11 or 12 when I first started wearing makeup “out.” When girls start going out to parties, school dances, bar and bat mitzvahs, etc., that’s about the right time for them to start learning about makeup. It’s my belief that at that age, a bit of lip gloss and maybe a swipe of mascara is all you need.

How much is too much makeup for tweens and teens?
Makeup for teens and tweens is all about enhancing your natural beauty and having a little bit of fun, not using it to cover up what you don’t like. For teens, I recommend a simple makeup routine, like using a Bobbi Brown Touch Up Stick to even skin tone and cover up problem spots, a pop of blush on the cheeks, a little lip gloss and a touch of mascara. That’s it.

What is your philosophy on skincare for tweens and teens?
Your teen years are a great time to establish good skincare habits. Each day, cleanse your skin, use a toner, and then moisturize with a lotion that contains SPF to keep your skin looking its best now and for years to come. Also, what you put into your body also affects how your skin looks — drink lots of water and make good, healthy food choices.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock all spring, you know that purple is the color of the season. I really love Nicole Richie‘s take on the trend that she wore out in LA on Apr. 21. How great does the shadow look brought slightly into the inner corner of her eyes? Plus, the thick black liner at her lashes really helps to keep the look defined and sexy. To get this look this season, I’ve been using Bobbi Brown Color Strips in Orchid. It’s the most perfect purple palette. It has a great nude base color and three purples that range from subtle to intense. Plus, it’s got a black powder that’s perfect for lining lids. I like to mix the three purple hues together to create a totally unique color depending on my mood. As a finishing touch, I use one of the three cream tints in the palette on my cheeks and lips – they perfectly complement the purply tones of the shadows.
