ABC Family has perfected the art of crafting darkly deceitful female characters — for example, every single girl on Pretty Little Liars — but this summer, it’s the boys’ turn to play. Avan Jogia stars in the new drama Twisted, about a (possibly) reformed teenage murderer, and he recently stopped by the HollywoodLife.com office to take us inside the mind of his character.

“On the pilot, [Danny] comes back from juvenile hall, having spent five years there for killing his aunt when he was 11,” the former Victorious star told us. “So, you know, light stuff.”

But just when things start to go Danny’s way, another major wrench is thrown into his life.

“He starts to integrate back into society,” Avan began, “but on the pilot, someone in school dies.”

(Avan and I agreed that if life was like ABC Family, we both would have asked to be home schooled.)

How to watch the first episode before the series’ summer premiere:

Though Twisted doesn’t officially premiere until June 11, ABC Family is showing a “sneak peek” — it’s actually the entire first episode — after the Pretty Little Liars season finale March 19. Avan assured me there will be plenty to keep viewers hooked.

“It’s primarily a mystery show,” he said. “Mystery and romance. It’s high school, right?”

We all know how addictive ABC Family dramas can be — they’ve practically got it down to a science at this point — and come summer, you’ll be able to add two more shows to your regimen. The network announced Feb. 6 that The Fosters and Twisted (formerly titled Socio) will both premiere during the summer months, bringing a few familiar faces back into your life.

‘The Fosters’

Wizards of Waverly Place‘s Jake T. Austin stars on The Fosters, “a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms.” Playing his moms are Meet The Parents‘ Teri Polo and In Treatment‘s Sherri Saum.

For an added dose of star power, Jennifer Lopez will serve as an executive producer!

‘Twisted’

For those who prefer a darker spin on their dramas, allow me to offer up Twisted, “a one-hour mystery full of twists and turns that is centered on a charismatic 16-year-old with a troubled past who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. Avan Jogia — formerly of Nickelodeon’s Victorious — stars as the 16-year-old in question, along with The Finder‘s Maddie Hasson and Prom‘s Kylie Bunbury as his two best friends.

As for that “darker spin” I mentioned earlier, it turns out Avan’s character “becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is surprisingly found dead in her home.”

Like I said, “dark.”

Forget going with a boyfriend to prom this year. Victorious star Victoria Justice, 17, says she’s single and would much rather go with her best friends!

“I don’t have a boyfriend at the moment,” Victoria says in the special Seventeen magazine prom edition (on newsstands Dec. 21). “So I’d rather go with one of my best friends, like Audrey — we’ve known each other since sixth grade; Avan Jogia, who plays Beck on Victorious; and Dylan and Cole Sprouse. I love them! They are so much fun, and they don’t take themselves seriously.”

“I would like my friend Josh [Hutcherson] to go too!,” Victoria adds. “He’s such a cool guy!” Sounds like she may have a little crush on Josh?

When we first reported that Miley Cyrus was dating Canadian actor Avan Jogia, many people’s response was: “who?” And when the steamy photo of the couple making out at Miley’s birthday party surfaced, people’s response was, again: ”wait, who?” We’re here to shed some light on the identity of Miley’s new dude.

Avan, 18, is from Vancouver (aka Twilight production Mecca) and like Miley, he’s in the entertainment business. Most recently, he’s been co-starring on the hit Nickelodeon show Victorious. But these are all just basic facts. If we really wanted to get to know Avan, we simply have to turn to his Formspring page for some in-depth Q&As from fans… and that’s exactly what we did.

From combing through his profile, we learned that Avan goes “clubbing” in the UK sometimes, but admits he’s not too big on it. He does, however, enjoy “pubs, bars, and lounges.” Other interesting facts: He thinks the term “celebrity” is overrated (you do know who you’re dating, right Avan?) and he does not wear a purity ring.

But the most interesting little nugget of info we got was his philosophy on dating within the entertainment industry: “I think I would like to keep it as private as possible, but that’s almost impossible nowadays,” he recognizes.

It’s safe to say that Avan is now all too aware of that fact… especially now that he’s dating Miley!
