Andy Rooney has passed away at 92.

Andy, who died Nov. 4, was best known for his 30-year career on 60 Minutes. He retired just a month ago before entering the hospital due to complications from surgery.

Andy Rooney, who delivered his last essay on 60 Minutes three weeks ago, developed serious complications following minor surgery and had to be hospitalized.

CBS News reported the 92-year-old writer is now in stable condition and, at the request of his family, offered no other information about his medical problems or where he was hospitalized.

The three-time Emmy-winner was a regular on television’s most popular news magazine. Since 1978, “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney” wrapped up the Sunday night program, often with a look at the absurdities of life and language.

On Oct. 2, he delivered his 1,097th and final essay, saying it was a moment he dreaded. “I wish I could do this forever. I can’t, though,” he said.

After 1,097 essays, and 33 years at CBS, Andy has stepped down from his ’60 Minutes’ throne — it won’t be the same without him!

Tears streamed down my face as Andy Rooney said ‘goodbye’ during his final Sunday night sign off. The 92-year-old has made a living out of complaining over every day annoyances, but he dropped his curmudgeon act and tugged at my heartstrings during his final essay.

“I wish I could do this forever,” he said. “I can’t, though.”

I’ve grown up watching Andy deliberate over things like: Why is there cotton in our pill bottles? Why do we need watches? What’s a Lady Gaga? To more serious thoughts on war, religion, and now his life.

The New York native started out as a writer for Arthur Godfrey‘s Talent Scouts radio show in 1949 and was years later was hired as a summer replacement for 60 Minutes‘ debate segment Point/Counterpoint. Andy’s witty “end of show” segment began in 1978 and turned into a weekly Sunday night ritual for Americans. Everyone wanted to tune in to find out what or who Andy was going to take on this week.

The talented writer gave us a peek into his life and that’s when the waterworks happened for me. He talked about his late wife Marguerite Rooney, who died in 2004, and showed us pictures of his four children, grandchildren and great-grand children.

“I probably haven’t said anything here that you didn’t already know or have already thought,” he said. “That’s what a writer does. A writer’s job is to tell the truth.”

On Sunday, after he completes his 1,087th essay, Andy will be retiring! We’ll miss him!

Andy began with CBS in 1949 as a writer for the show “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts,” as well as “The Gary Moore Show” and writing for CBS News.

He started with ’60 Minutes’ from day one, beginning in 1968. Not only did he report but for the first few seasons he produced some of the segments. In July of 1978 he began speaking his mind on misleading car fatalities on the fourth of July weekend.

After his last broadcast, CBS will air a segment that will look back on Rooney’s 31 years on the show. We wish Andy a happy retirement!
