Jay Manuel is best known for being the photo shoot director on America’s Next Top Model‘s first 18 seasons. Since he knows everyone in Hollywood, he had quite a bit to say about the fashion and beauty from the biggest award show of the year — Oscars night.

“There were so many great dresses,” Jay exclusively told HollywoodLife.com at the launch party of the new Lane Bryant flagship store on 34th street. But of course, he had a few favorites, including Naomi Watts.

“I think the dress was inspired by the Chrysler building,” Jay said of Naomi’s asymmetrical Giorgio Armani gown.

However, his all-time favorite dress came on the actress who he recently voted worst dressed.

“I’m going to have to say Jessica Chastain,” Jay said at the party. “She redeemed herself for me from the Golden Globes – I wasn’t a fan, I can’t lie – in Calvin Klein. I’ve always believed that fashion is about proportion and playing with those proportions. We know what happened — the girls weren’t looking so flattering.”

‘The girls’ as he referred to them did look flattering in her gold beaded gown at the Oscars, and looked – as Jay referred to – “like this gold statue” in her Armani Prive gown.

Best Makeup Looks At The Oscars

Makeup was hard to judge at the awards as everyone was so stunning. While Jennifer Lawrence stood out to the designer, he ranked Charlize Theron his top pick.

“Everyone really looked so beautiful,” the 40-year-old fashionista said. “Charlize Theron, but can she ever do wrong? And that Dior gown looked perfect on her because of the short hair.”

Getting Affordable Red Carpet Looks (Fast)

While not all of us can afford to get our hair and makeup done every morning, Jay shared that it doesn’t cost a fortune to have a great look — even super glamorous looks, thanks to some help from YouTube.

“I think women should definitely go out and shop at the drug store level,” Jay said. “I’m a fan of Michelle Phan. I love the fact that she really does embrace that drug store brand and she shows someone how to get that off-the-runway look.”

Another thing many women don’t have? Time. While some stars on the carpet have spent hours primping, some of us are doing our makeup in a rush in the morning before work. So, what are the essentials?

“Most women want at least mascara,” Jay said, adding that it gives its own definition so you can go without liner. “Too many people get lost in the details — you know, the shadowing and high-lighting and low-lighting. I always say ‘do what people are going to see.’”

“One of the products that goes really under the radar most of the year, but people talk about in summer is bronzers. They think it’s something to give you this sun-kissed look, but really a bronzer is an amazing product that gives the skin a glow, but it can give dimensions. So in the winter, instead of using it all over your face, what about just taking a blush-sized brush instead of a powder brush and take it out along your hair line, temples and along your cheekbones; it’s giving natural dimensions to your face without looking contour.”

Did you hear that ladies? It’s simple and quick to get a glamorous look!

“If you have no time to do anything else, mascara, bronzer, maybe a touch of concealer, you could be done in a minute,” Jay made sure to say.

The doting parents traveled with the baby to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, where Adele performed her Oscar-winning hit — and wowed the crowd full of fellow A-listers. Her performance was her first time performing for a crown in more than a year — and she totally owned the moment!

Adele’s Stunning Black Jenny Packham Dress

Adele graced the red carpet in fully beaded black gown by British designer Jenny Packham. The beautiful songstress definitely stepped her game up since wearing the unflattering red floral Valentino gown at the 2013 Grammys. Her Oscars dress accentuated her voluptuous post-baby curve, and resembled the sequined black mesh Giorgio Armani dress that she wore at the 2012 Grammys.

Have you ever been totally excited to wear a dress to your prom, only to be devastated when you show up and another girl is wearing the same dress? Well, Anne Hathaway knows how you feel.

The Les Miserables actress was sent over the edge the day before the Oscars when she learned that her co-star Amanda Seyfried’s Alexander McQueen dress looked very similar to the Valentino gown she planned to wear.

Anne Hathaway Throws A Fit

“Anne was like WTF!” a source tells Us Weekly. Reportedly, the actress couldn’t control her anger and began to throw a fit right in the middle of the Les Mis dress rehearsal! “Amanda didn’t want to deal with it and left,” the source adds.

Anne’s drama continued into Oscar Sunday, Feb. 24, when she decided not to wear the Valentino dress and find a new one altogether! ”Anne made the fashion, make up, hair, and jewelry teams wait at her home for hours as she decided what to do about the dress debacle,” a second source explains.

Anne Hathaway’s Prada Dress Debacle

She eventually landed on a Prada-made gown, and the rest is history. The pale pink satin gown fit awkwardly, and made it look like Anne’s nipples were poking out the whole night. She was apparently so horrified by the whole mess that she surprisingly released a statement in apology.

The statement was very general and didn’t name names: “It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans.” Now we know who she was referring to!

What we don’t get is, why didn’t she just wear her dress as planned? Having a similar dress as someone at an event where there are hundreds of dresses surely can’t be the tragedy that Anne made it out to be. Doesn’t switching up her gown last-minute — and then releasing a statement afterwards — just make Anne look like a petty diva?

Kristen Stewart, 22, was stunning in a pale pink Reem Acra gown at the 85th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 24. Although her Chanel makeup looked gorgeous, some were confused about her un-done hairstyle when she was surrounded by gorgeous, fancy updos. Celebrity hairstylist Claudio Lazo, owner of C The Salon in Studio City, California, told HollywoodLife.com he was slightly disappointed with Kristen’s second-day hair look:

“Such an attractive and talented actress, and a great representative of what ‘young Hollywood’ is about. However, I wanted to see more glamour from her for an event like the Oscars. It’s cool to show your rebelliousness in your everyday dress, but for stellar events like these, I was hoping she would spruce it up a bit more in terms of her hair,” Claudio said.

He continued: “It was too ‘every day’ hair. Classic events are classic events and should be respected as such. You do not want to stray too far from the norm because movie fans all over the world are looking at this event to see the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. They can see the ‘every day you’ celebrity when they read the weekly magazines.”

Kristen Stewart’s Hair Too Casual? — Weigh In

We agree that her hair was casual for the Oscars, but since a low-key style is what makes Kristen comfortable (especially since she had to overcome being on crutches and being without Robert Pattinson), we give her a free pass!

Was JLaw Caught Smoking Pot?

Jennifer was photographed smoking what appears to be a marijuana joint while hanging out with a friend in Hawaii. Jennifer is there to film some more scenes for The Hunger Games, and she appeared to be having a great time over a glass of red wine too.

It’s unclear what she was smoking, but she also seemed to be having a heart-to-heart with her girlfriend as they hugged and looked like their were in an intense conversation.

Now that Jennifer has won an Oscar at such a young age, don’t you think that everyone should leave her alone for a bit to enjoy this time?

Seth MacFarlane, 39, continues to get heat for singing the sexist “We Saw Your Boobs” song at the recent Academy Awards. Feminist Jane Fonda, 75 is now speaking out — “Why not list all the penises we’ve seen?” She does have a point!

Jane, who presented the Best Director Award with Michael Douglas, shared her thoughts publicly on Feb.27 with this blog on her website:

“What I really didn’t like was the song and dance number about seeing actresses boobs. I agree with someone who said, if they want to stoop to that, why not list all the penises we’ve seen? Better yet, remember that this is a telecast seen around the world watched by families with their children and to many this is neither appropriate or funny. I also didn’t like the remark made about Quvenzhane and Clooney, or the stuff out of Ted’s mouth and all the comments about what women do to get thin for their dresses. Waaaay too much stuff about women and bodies, as though that’s what defines us.”

Seth made a joke about George Clooney dating Quvenzhane Wallis – which was super lame considering she is only 9-years-old. Funny or not, she should not have been mentioned in this type of joke.

Other Actresses Offended By ‘We Saw Your Boobs’

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham took to her Twitter Feb. 26 and wrote, “Ladies: Anne Hathaway is a feminist and she has amazing teeth. Let’s save our bad attitudes for the ones who aren’t advancing the cause.”

Another one of Lena’s tweets included, “Hey ragers. ‘The ones who aren’t advancing the cause’ I mentioned aren’t always, or mostly, women. Case in point: I saw your boobs.”

Just by looking at Charlize Theron‘s expression while watching the performance, you could tell she was not happy. The reason Charlize was mentioned in the ‘boob’ song was because her character in Monster was topless in a rape scene. Not cool!

The Academy Defends The ‘Boob’ Song

In a Feb.28 statement to The Wrap, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defended Oscar host Seth and the show’s producers, saying, “If the Oscars are about anything, they’re about creative freedom. We think the show’s producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, and host Seth MacFarlane did a great job and we hope our worldwide audience found the show entertaining.”

“We kept it really chic and simple,” Chris told HollywoodLife.com. “Natalie’s hair had a Richard Avedon, 1960s feel. Her dress was empire waist, so her hair had that same 60s vibe. Kate Young, Natalie’s stylist, had sent me some pictures of ideas she had so we started with that for inspiration. Natalie said that from the front it looked like she’d cut her hair short, and then from the back you saw this beautiful French twist. She called it a fakeout short haircut, which she loved.”

How To Get Natalie Portman’s Oscar Hair

Chris is sharing his tips and techniques he used on Natalie at the Oscars:

“I used Living Proof Prime Style Extender while Natalie’s hair was still damp so that her style would last all night. Then I blew it dry with a round brush from YS Parks – a line of Japanese brushes that’s just unbelievable. I created a classic French twist, using bobby pins and teasing it a bit to give it a bit of a cushion. It wasn’t too high – it was a bit lower on her head, with a really beautiful shape in the back. Last, I used Hold Firm Hairspray to smooth it all down, get rid of any flyaways, and really give it that shiny, smooth, lacquered finish. The whole look – her hair and her dress – looked so chic and modern.”

Anne Hathaway opted for a pale pink Prada column gown with open back detailing for the 2013 Oscars on Feb. 24 in LA, where the 30-year-old star took home the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award for her role in Les Miserables. Her dress was received with mixed reactions — and it turns out that she had a couture frock crafted for the occasion by Valentino! So, why didn’t she wear it down the red carpet for the big night?

“It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans,” Anne said in a statement released by her publicist. “Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honour of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused.”

While Anne didn’t say exactly which dress was similar to her Valentino creation, reports speculate that it was her co-star Amanda Seyfried‘s custom Alexander McQueen gown that was strikingly similar to the frock Anne was supposed to wear.

The confusion first arose when the Valentino house sent out a press release mere hours before the Oscars red carpet, confirming that Anne, Jennifer Aniston, and Sally Field would be wearing Valentino to the award show — however once Anne stepped out in her pink Prada gown it was clear that there was a mix up.

“I didn’t know what I was wearing until two hours ago. I tried on a lot of dresses, but at the end of the day, I loved the simplicity of it,” Anne said on the red carpet at the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

Anne and Valentino go way back. Not only did the designer craft her one-of-a-kind wedding dress that she wore for her September 2012 nuptials, but the star also opted for the brand for her 2011 Oscars appearance — and their relationship isn’t strictly reserved to the red carpet! Designer Valentino Garavani went skiing with the couple over the New Year and has famously said Anne is, “like my daughter.”
