Bio:
Edward Nero (born Edward M. Nero in 1986) is an American police officer. Edward is one of the six officers at the center of the death of Freddie Gray in 2015. On April 12, 2015, Edward, Officer Garret E. Miller and Lt. Brian W. Rice were patrolling Baltimore’s Gilmor Homes housing project on bicycles. Freddie fled from the police after making eye contact, prompting a short foot chase. Edward was one of the officers who detained Freddie, ultimately leading to Gray’s arrest for allegedly possessing an illegal switchblade. Edward and five other officers loaded Freddie into the back of a police van. Within 30 minutes after Freddie was placed in the vehicle, paramedics were summoned to take him to the hospital. Freddie was shackled and not wearing a seatbelt in the van. Freddie had suffered an injury that severed his spine at his neck. The injury placed Freddie in a coma and week later, he died. Freddie’s death prompted the 2015 Baltimore Riots and the six officers involved were charged over his death. Edward received the least of the charges: second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct. On May 23, he was found not guilty of all four charges.
