‘Vampire Diaries’ Dawn Olivieri On Bath Time With Ian Somerhalder: ‘I Really Enjoyed That Scene.’ Exclusive!

Damon’s new girlfriend takes us beyond the bubbles & hints at a possible Andie-Elena smackdown.

Last Thursday’s episode of The Vampire Diaries ended with a bang — a bubbly, bloody, wine-soaked bang. I’m talking, of course, about the fan-favorite bath scene between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Mystic Falls’ intrepid reporter Andie Star (Dawn Olivieri). caught up with Dawn to get all the dirty (and potentially awkward) details. “I knew Ian already,” she began. “We have mutual friends, and my boyfriend is his really good, close friend.” Yikes! So… was it awkward?

Believe it or not, it wasn’t! “You have to psych yourself up [for love scenes] and find things you like about the person so you can become attracted to them,” she explained. “I mean, it’s not so hard with Ian. He’s very charismatic and sweet and compassionate … and he’s not too bad on the eyes. So it’s not such a bad situation for me.”

Yeah, I guess it’s not a terrible situation. Dawn continued: “We were able to ignite that attraction fairly easily; that scene was very sweet and emotional. I’ll tell you what: I had a very nice, connective moment with Ian in that bathtub scene. … We shot it for hours, and we were so pruned that we’d both pull our legs out of the water and prop our feet up. We laughed, we had a really great time. It was a really nice, vulnerable scene. I really enjoyed that scene a lot.”

There’s just one thing Dawn didn’t know while filming the now-infamous moment– it was Ian’s birthday! “We’re in the bathtub, full of bubbles, blood everywhere, and here’s this cake coming,” Dawn recalled between laughter. “[Ian] blows all the candles out, and then he takes this huge bite of the cake. No hands, nothing. He just digs his face into the cake and takes a huge bite. It was so cute.”

What’s next for Andie Star:

As an admitted “Delena” shipper, I couldn’t help but ask Dawn whether Damon will be using his new gal pal to make Elena (Nina Dobrev) jealous — and I got the answer I was looking for.

“That hasn’t occurred quite yet to the extreme that I think everyone is interested in knowing about,” Dawn teased. “But I would say that I’m sure inevitably this is going to happen. Just not yet.”

And although Dawn is heading back to Atlanta in two weeks to film more scenes, she said she has no idea how long Andie will stick around in Mystic Falls.

“Andie has so much more to do,” Dawn teased. “I feel there’s a lot of room for this character to figure out [Damon’s] compulsion. She’s not stupid, but this compulsion keeps her from seeing the bigger picture. I can’t wait for them to give her some moments where she kind of gets an idea of what’s going on. Or whether it’s Elena who helps. I don’t know how they’re going to write it, but that’s coming. It has to come.”
