Taylor Swift's Revenge — The Singer Takes Down Joe Jonas & John Mayer! Should She Be Publicly Dissing Her Exes?

Posted Tue, October 19, 2010 3:20pm EDT

The country crooner is one of the most talented and beloved stars in America, but she is not afraid to take on the men who have done her wrong in her wildly popular songs!

Taylor Swift‘s new album “Speak Now” will finally be released after much hype on Oct. 25, and as songs are slowly being leaked, one this is becoming very clear — Taylor likes to get back at the men in her life through her lyrics! Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner and Kanye West are just a few of the men Taylor is more than happy to take to task through her very straight forward, and in no way subtle, music lyrics.

Here is what Taylor has had to say about the men in her life :

  1. John Mayer : John most definitely did Taylor wrong judging by the lyrics in her song “Dear John.” The pair dated briefly, despite their 13 year age difference, and Taylor seems like she was soon screwed over in a BIG way. Dear John / I see it all now that you’re gone / Don’t you think I was too young / To be messed with / The girl in the dress / Cried the whole way home / I should’ve known.
  2. Joe Jonas : Joe allegedly dumped Taylor over the phone, probably not the smartest thing to do to a songwriter who tends to be a bit of an oversharer. He, in return, seems to have gotten the new song “Mean” written in his honor. You, with your words like knives / And swords and weapons that you use against me / You, have knocked me off my feet again / Got me feeling like I’m nothing / You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard / Calling me out when I’m wounded / You, pickin’ on the weaker man.
  3. Taylor Lautner : In a bit of a departure, Taylor actually seems to think Taylor was one of, if not the, greatest guys she has ever dated. Lady Taylor seems to be taking revenge on herself in “Back to December!” So this is me swallowing my pride / Standing in front of you saying I’m sorry for that night / And I go back to December all the time / Turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you / Wishing that I realized what I had when you were mine / I’d go back to December, turn around and make it all right / I go back to December all the time.
  4. Kanye West : Hey, did you guys know that Taylor and Kanye had a public spat? Oh, you did? Kanye garnered national criticism when he rushed the stage and stole Taylor’s 2009 MTV VMA Award, and she gave her opinion in a song that, oddly enough, seems to forgive the rapper! In her song “Innocent,” which she debuted at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Taylor gave her reaction to the events. Wasn’t it beautiful running wild ’til you fell asleep/Before the monsters caught up to you/It’s alright, just wait and see/Your string of lights is still bright to me/Oh, who your are is not where you’ve been/You’re still an innocent.

What do you think about Taylor’s tendency to get back at her men in her songs? Total backstabber or girl power?

Every singer or writer, who actually write their own pieces, use their personal lives as subject matter, so why shouldn’t she? She doesn’t say anything in the songs about any of the relationships that the public didn’t already know. She merely adds her emotions to it,and what’s wrong with that? I, also, think that this is a growing point for her. She wrote an album to address all of the times in her life that she didn’t “speak now” so that she can move on. At 20, I felt the same way about my past, but she has the confidence to allow millions of people in on those moments and to grow with her. Not every song about someone is negative, such as “Back in December” about Taylor Lautner. Honestly, out of all the celebrities her age right now, I think she’s taking the healthiest approach. Instead of rebelling like Lindsey Lohan or Miley Cyrus, she’s getting out everything she’s wanted to say and moving on.

To people saying she writes too much about failed relationships and it’s getting old… I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but that is probably the most common topics of music period.

To people saying no one will want to date her… She’s a celebrity. Almost every part of the relationship will be public from the beginning. What makes you think that how it ends would be any different? Isn’t that to be expected with any and all people in the limelight? Plus, if you don’t want someone talking crap about you then don’t treat them like crap. Again, she didn’t have something negative to say about everyone.

To people saying that her songs are one-sided… Of course they are, she wrote them and she’s singing them. If you want the other side of the story, ask the other person. She’s not speaking for anyone, but herself. These songs are about HER feelings, HER emotions, HER experiences. Just because the other person doesn’t want to tell their side means that she can’t tell hers? How does that make sense?

People should listen to her album before judging it. (And yes, I have)

Honestly, she has the right to write about whom or whatever she wants to and seriously if either of you don’t like them here’s a thought flip the station or change your channel, no one is paying you to to pay attention to her or her lyrics. Taylor you’re freaking awesome and I agree when you find something else to write about I’ll be there supporting you too. Anwyays its what writers do, talk about the things that go on in their lives and she just so happens to focus on her relationships, if the songs are even actually about them.

She sounds so crazy and psycho in her songs.. she’s gonna get restraining orders put on her one day. I laugh at all the soccer moms who approve of this trash because she wears pants and acts eternally 12.

She’s so stupid for hooking up with John Mayer. America’s angel isn’t a virgin anymore!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to like Taylor Swift- she was down-to-earth and sweet. But seriously, I’m getting tired of her and her songs about lost love. I understand that break-ups hurt, but everyone goes through breakups!! If I were a guy, I wouldn’t EVER want to date her v/c what if it wouldn’t work out? Then I’d be her next target. Taylor, get a life and grow up.

Im pretty sure Taylor Swift is mature beyond her years. Also if I were her I wouldnt change a thing…sales were over 1 million the first week Speak Now came out. She broked a record for record sales…get it? The little 20 year old girl has talent beyond words and I think she should write about whatever she wants. Breakups= a good thing there is always going to be a market for that kind of stuff!! Why dont you give a little credit where it is due:)

really taylor really…cnt you ever write a song about anything else. God she obsessed with her failed relationships. Dnt get me wrong…i love some of her songs like tear drops on my guitar for example but its starting to get a little old. She really needs to change her sound or she will start to fade away slowly but surely.

Although i am a big fan of Taylor Swift and not a big fan of Joe Jonas, I think what she’s doing in her songs is the real meaning of desperate.
Joe’s public face is not like before after all he did to Demi and there is no need to embarrass him more ;)

Umm….honestly she keeps dissing her exes, its not right. It’s like she’s using the whole ‘boo hoo, he dumped me, he was so mean to me’ thing to get sympathy from her fans and make sure that they’ll buy her stupid album. She may be sweet to her fans and everything. But break-ups aren’t always one-sided, sometimes both the people involved in the relationship are at fault. Just because nobody is getting her exes’ take on the story doesn’t mean that everyone should assume that she was right and they were all wrong.

I love Taylor Swift she rocks! BUT Joe Jonas NEVER deserved to be embarressed like that, he is a VERY good man Joe Jonas is a sweet, funny, talented, and smart guy who would never mean to hurt anybody!!!! The kind of guy who deserves to have a song written about him is the kind who cheats, beats, /or tries to hide the girl away ect. What Taylor Swift did to Joe Jonas was NOT RIGHT!!!!

And you know this how? Oh that’s right from fantasy land. I forgot. He broke up with her with a text or some crap like that so no it wasn’t such a nice thing to do. Should she keep some things to herself? Maybe, but then what would she write about. I like her music and until she’s ready to write about other things I say go for it.

But you don’t know what happened either, so you could ignorantly be living in a fantasy land, yourself. For all we know, Taylor could have hung up on Joe when he was trying to tell her how he felt. You can tell by how a person presents himself. Joe Jonas may be a little confused when it comes to women, but he isn’t that heartless. What Taylor is doing is kind of like slander (to me); she should just get over it and move on. I understand the thing about John Mayer because that was the most recent heartbreak she’s had, but her and Joe Jonas are supposedly friends now…after breaking up a long time ago, so why is she still writing about him? Hmmm…probably because she’s still hung up on what “he did”. Her songs are completely whiny and full of teenage angst. She’s twenty years old…she’s not a child anymore…write about things in the world, or something.

i agree. she seems very immature, especially for someone who is in her business. maybe it’s just ‘innocence’, and god bless her for having life easy enough to be innocent even at the age of 20.

To be honest Joe does kinda deserve it. He wrote the song “Much Better” about her basically saying how she’s not good enough. He can’t really expect to be able to do that without any comeback from taylor. She has said the album took 2 years to make so the songs about Joe might not have been that recent

I think it’s bitchy of her to publicly take down her exes. first of all joe broke up with her what? 2 or 3 years ago? GET OVER IT!!!!! He’s not even that great nor good looking. The whole Kanye thing, I thought it was pretty funny for him to do that because honestly she DID NOT deserve it. All her songs are the same ‘he dumped me, he dumped me’ It’s not the man’s fault they’re not satisfied with her and that they rather date someone better. That’s just my opinion.

you know, i’m kinda sick of her… reading these lyrics makes me so. i think the john mayer song is tacky, but she is just a kid i suppose. for one, she sounds weak when she plays the victim card (mayer and jonas songs). two, a wise person once told me that you could tell a lot about a person by how they speak about their exes… she is just a kid, but to state the obvious, she has some growing up to do.
