Move over, Bonnie Bennett — The CW’s about to unleash six new witches on us. Will you be watching ‘The Secret Circle’ this fall?
Pretty ladies? Handsome gents? Magical mayjem? Yup, The Secret Circle seems to have every requirement for a CW hit, which makes it the perfect series to follow The Vampire Diaries on Thursdays this fall. (That, and it’s based on a book series penned by TVD author L.J. Smith; and the show shares TVD‘s executive producer, Kevin Williamson.) I got a sneak peek at the series May 19 at The CW Upfront presentation in NYC, and after getting a look at the cast in person, I think I’m ready to join their coven.
In a nutshell, The Secret Circle tells the story of Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson), a lovely teenage who discovers that she comes from a family of witches after moving to a small town. To complicate Cassie’s life even more, it turns out she’s also part of a coven of witches — six altogether — and her arrival in town completes their circle, unlocking their true supernatural potential.
Besides bringing back a few familiar faces into our living rooms — Britt from the late, great Life Unexpected; Gale Harold, formerly of Hellcats; and even Thomas Dekker, who I loved on Heroes — The Secret Circle will also introduce the world to a few new kids on the block. And as exiting CW President of Entertainment Dawn Ostroff told the crowd, these new faces might just be the “movie stars of tomorrow.”
But my personal favorite piece of The Secret Circle puzzle is Phoebe Tonkin as Fay. With her biting wit and constant impatience, she definitely appears to be the loose cannon of the circle. I’d even go so far as to say she reminds me of a female Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder.) But even if she doesn’t quite smolder her way up to Damon’s level, it looks like she’ll be keeping the viewers — and her fellow witches — on our collective toes.
