Sarah Palin's Hunting Trip To Feed Her Family Cost — $42,400 or $141.33 per lb. of Caribou Meat! Exclusive!

Posted Mon, December 6, 2010 6:02pm EST

When Sarah Palin took us on a hunting/camping trip with her dad Chuck Heath on the latest episode of Sarah Palin’s Alaska, she said hunting was necessary to “fill her freezer!”

Hunting for caribou means “food on the table and in the freezer for a lot of Alaskans,” the former Govenor extolled. She opened her freezer to let us see how the Palin meat pantry was getting bare.

“For many people in remote areas of Alaska, there’s no grocery store nearby, we just got to get out and hunt,” enthused Sarah. The only thing is that getting out and hunting for Sarah turned out to be an adventure requiring three separate airplanes to get her to her hunting spot with her father and family friend Steve Becker.

HollywoodLife.com researched the logistics and cost of Palin’s hunting trip which resulted in a bagged caribou, and discovered that it was a mighty expensive way to feed the Palin family, at $42,400 for the trip.

The grand total to charter a Dehavilland Dash plane from Era Alaska to travel round trip from Wasilla’s Palmer airport to Deadhorse, Alaska was $37,600. In Deadhorse,  the Palins switched to a 6 seat Cessna C207 Skywagon which they flew into the Kavik River Camp, at $1200 for the round trip, according to Lori Goodman, director of sales and marketing of Era Alaska, the company which chartered the planes for the Palins.

Once in Kavik, the Palins spent two nights at the Kavik River Camp at $250 a person per night, for a $750 total.

Finally, the Deltana Outfitters flew them individually on a Piper Supercub airplane from Kavik into their hunting spot at a cost of $350 per hour for three hours each way, for a total of $2100, according to Deltana.

The grand Palin total to bag a caribou and get it back to the Palin homestead added up to $42,400, or $141.33 per lb. of caribou meat. Sarah shot and killed a female cow which may have weighed up to 300 lbs.

Just to put this is perspective, the Palins could have filled their freezer with ribeye steak at $10.99 a lb. from Alaska’s Mr. Prime Beef, which is based in Anchorage and ships anywhere in the state.

I have no problem with hunting as a hobby and eating what you catch. But when Sarah goes on about being “tough, independent and self sufficent” and that’s why she hunts, she can’t be serious. How many Americans can afford to be that “self sufficent” and “self sustaining” when it costs $42,400 to personally hunt for their meat?

It’s a nice fantasy Sarah — but that’s what you’re really selling on your reality show.

First of all, part of the reason for the trip to Kavik was for the show about Alaska, and Kavik is an interesting hunting camp in Alaska which has a sole caretaker year-round. I’m sure the TV show was footing the bill for most of this, thus the cost per lb. of meat would NOT normally be what you stated. Second of all, the Palins live in a small town on a lake, so probably they are able to fish and hunt nearby usually, like many Alaskans, and are normally able to fill their freezer with food which ends up being an economical deal for them. The point was to feature interesting places and things in Alaska, AND to show Palin hunting, which the show achieved.

Your facts are way off and discredited due to the fact Sarah Palin didn’t fly with Deltanna!

Sam has it right below on his comment. Sarah is a great person that threatens the liberals and the clueless that is why you are attacking her. This was a production to show this lifestyle of use of wild game for the family consumption. Obviously it cost more to produce a show than if she had gone without the crew. Get a life people.

This woman makes me laugh. She has absolutely no clue about the wilderness, hunting and can’t handle a firearm. I’m surprised and disappointed she knows which end the bullet comes out of. Her entire “reality” show is shameless self-promotion and double standards. It’s really too bad that a mama grizzly hasn’t eaten her yet, but if I was a bear I wouldn’t eat that rotten bitch either.

Obviously many Outsiders do not know there are two types of hunters in Alaska. Those who really do have to hunt to keep food on the table are subsistence hunters. And the ‘others’ who are just sport hunters. Sport hunters are willing to spend thousands of dollars to hunt game in Alaska or Africa which in many instances they don’t need or even eat. All they want is another trophy rack to hang their hat on. Sarah Palin is a sport hunter. Simple as that. No, she is not giving a positive view of Alaska by her constant bitching about the media. If she doesn’t like the media so much why does she spend so much time in front of cameras? I wish that Idaho transplant would just go back there. I’m sure Idahoans can find something useful to do with her other than being the poster child for ‘No Child Left Behind Act.’ We don’t want or need a female replacement of George W. Bush. Perhaps North Korea will consider hiring her to be their spokesperson. Maybe she can teach them to be sport hunters so they won’t starve to death. Her reality show has many spectacular views of Alaska ruined by her standing in the fore front.

I bet it was closer to triple that price. I can’t imagine even 1/2 the weight of a caribou being useful meat. More like 1/3 is my guess. So let’s call it $420/lb. :-)

Didn’t cost the media or us for the hunting trip that she went on! So what is the problem? The meat she is eating is most likely better that the meat we eat BOUGHT at the local grocery store!! With all the crap added to it for us to eat!! THAT our gov’t decided was good for us!

Just to make it clear I will simplify.
Government= officials appointed by our elected representatives as a reward for helping to raise money for those representatives to get elected- an obscene amount of money!
( I do not recall seeing any plumbers, teachers, engineers or restaurant workers in Congress, The House- some of them are very smart- I checked!)
Then add lobbyists for Agriculture, Pharmaceutical Industry, Biochemistry- the ones that add chemicals as additives to your food to make 300lb of ham out of 100 lbs of meat which may taste good but prohibited in Europe as the governments there PAY for their citizens health and do not want them sick! It does not matter Democrats or Republicans, Conservatives or Progressives- they are all the same here. The kicker is to watch the passionate populace well fed with above mentioned “ham” and their infighting regarding ” nanny” state, Dems or republicans, etc They think that they can make a difference, what a hoot!

Ridiculous. I live in the North Georgia mountains, and I’m telling you right now. I am a hunter. The deer meat I feed my family costs about $1, (price of a bullet) and is both healthier and more nutritious than any meat you’ll get at a supermarket. I hate this political jargon over hunting, and I hate when someone such as this dips* Sarah Palin gets involved in it. I’m a hunter, and an environmentalist. Imagine that.

I don’t think the issue is with her hunting. The issue is with her making it sound like she has to hunt in order to feed her family. Does she really need to spend $42,000 to feed her family for one hunting trip?

I’m not a hunter. I do not think I could shoot an animal. I don’t think its wrong for people to hunt for food. It just seems crazy to spend that kind of money to shoot one animal. As the writer stated in the article she could have ordered the meat and had it delivered.

I just watched the show for the first time. This is so funny. I am 18 and have more of a grasp on reality then she ever will. Does she even know what poverty is. That money could be spent on a child who doesn’t have a jacket for the winter season. A child who lives on the streets because there mother is a crack head and works out of a trap house. She should take that money and build up the projects or the hood. help the kids that can’t help themselves. people wake up, sarah palin’s alaska is far from reality. How are you the average american family, when the average american family has 40,000 of debt but she can spend it hunting. in simple terms, GTFU!

The bottom line is.. It’s a SHOW, and if you are unhappy TLC should be getting your nasty gram. It’s TLC who’s flipping the Bill Not Sarah! This isn’t Sarah Palins home production, is was created to “inform” people about Alaska and the Palins. Alaska is a beautiful Sate that many people will never have the opportunity to experience. And try to remember, just like any other TV Show there are add ins.
I am sure TLC could give up all of its Home Decorting shows, and Cake Baking shows and other “family life” bits and simply run ad’s all day asking for people to send money. But it’s not going to sell! Little People, Kate +8, Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes.. is what sells.
So, lets not single out One Person for agreeing to host a show and blame her for world poverty.

To be fair to her, they shot two caribou, the man that she and her father hunted with killed one the night before she killed hers. Secondly, I can only hope that this specific trip is not a true reflection of her typical hunts. Obviously, this one was for the show, and so she was 1. trying to find a beautiful landscape, 2. trying to find somewhere devoid of other hunters, and 3. meeting a woman she had previously interviewed at the place they stayed two nights. If this website could find any data that wasn’t completely speculative to suggest that this hunting trip is more reminiscent of her hunts off-camera, then I would be mildly upset. If not, then this story doesn’t matter at all.

Hello all again just thought I would come back and get back into this with everyone again, Palin is a fake. Shes only a hope for the people out there that pity themselves, looking for a white knight to save there day. Look either way you want to interpret her and her intentions, Russia is not in out backyard!!! She is smart enough to make a pretty penny from all you neanderthals buying into her crap!!! and as for all you vegatarians, your idiots!!! i can t help but open a can of worms but here it is. our america was founded in a time of real king and queens, the people who fled sought out RELIGIOUS freedoms, and they where all CHRISTIANS, how ever you want to interpret it, if you believe in GOD AND JESUS than you are a CHRISTIAN. and as for the pilgrims your a moron they where starving not because they didn’t now how to shoot, indians didn’t have guns, they just came ill equipped.
yea they had to eat protein (meat) to keep from completely being malnurished and starving to death. so they did their thing helped out our ancestors, and then BAM we are killing them with disease, and stealing their land. next vegans of the USA, back to christian stuff, we where founded with and ethical code based on beliefs from the bible. OUR GOVERNMENT LAWS CAME FROM THE BIBLE. THERE WAS A WHOLE LOT MORE BELIEF IN A POWER GREATER THAN US!!!! AND TILL TODAY OUR AMENDMENTS AND BILL OF RIGHTS ALL ARE STILL BASED ON BIBLICAL BELIF’S. SO TO TOTALLY DENY THE BIBLE AND BIBLICAL STANDARD IS TREASON. this is where vegitarians you all should be classified as, because a whole lot of vegans are bible thumpers, and its kinda ironic because there are mulitiple scriptures pertaining to eating MEAT!!!! one in particular i can recall is when JESUSE CHOSE TO FEED A WHOLE CREW OF PEOPLE. few hundred, thousand, what ever it was it was a lot and you now what he fed them???? DO YOU REMEMBER OR EVEN KNOW WHAT HE PULLED OUT OF A BARREL, BUCKET, HAT??? FISH FISH FISH, also used as a substitute for pork, chicken, beef, dog, cat, anything else out there that is eaten as meat. FISH IS MEAT. FED TO PEOPLE ALL HE COULD FEED IF JESUS WANTED US TO BE VEGATARIANS THEN HE WOULDVE FEED THOSE PEOPLE LETTUCE. CARROTS. BEETS, PEANUTS (good source of protein) PEOPLE WAKE UP AND STOP LIVING HERE FOR YOUR SELVES AND LIVING IN FRONT OF THE DAM TEEVEE. WAKE UP AND STOP GIVING PALIN THE PUBLICITY SHE THINKS SHE DESERVES. I HAVE MET HER A FEW TIMES. MY OLD FOOTBALL COACH IS BESTFRIENDS WITH THAT FAMILY. SHES A NORMAL PERSON WITH A PRETTY CUTE SMILE. AND BLEW UP AFTER BECOMING THE FISRT FEMALE ALASKAN GOVERNOR.

First let me say that I am a supporter of Ms Palin and her political positions. I think she is a sharp person and is also smarter than the people that are in the White House now. But this show she has is a joke. If she thinks that she is convincing people that she is just like us, and average american then she is the one who is a fool. I don’t watch her show but will stop by and watch for a second or two every now and then. After seeing that its the same old crap, I keep turning to another station. Just like other celeb’s, I’m getting sick of seeing and hearing about Ms Palin. To me, she is starting to come off as a phony with ambitions that she is not honest about and that effects how I see and feel about her. I know she has a great following but she is in the process of losing one here. To try and prove that she is tough and so independent by going on a $47,000 trip to kill one animal and to shot a few guns, please, give me a brake. If she beleives this herself and if she thinks that she is convincing others by these actions then she is slipping fast into the worst kind of deception a person can experience, that’s self deception, thinking your something when your not.

I live in Alaska and Palin remains an embarassment and horrible representative of Alaskans. She is filthy rich, making money off her looks and one-liners- To make matters worse, she is so vain and narcissistic, she will likely run for President. Get the word out- Palin is NOT America !!

It kills me that this woman purports to speak for all Alaskans. That is to say, if all Alaskans could afford to spend that on a hunting trip, I’d be fine with that. But whatever Sarah, don’t use the word “we” when you’re talking about Alaska, OK?

to the veg. out there. YOU would not be alive today, if it were not for MEAT. when they first came over to america, the settlers didnt know how to shoot and hunt. the indians taught them how, and Saved them that first winter. as they were dying off in the hundreds. the indians provided meat for them to eat, thus NOW we have you and me. who are alive today because of that.
if they had ate berries and what not, there would be no america. it would still be indians only.
