Rosewood’s resident ‘Liars’ have all found themselves in forbidden romances — just in time for Valentine’s Day!
Aria (Lucy Hale) finally ended her cold war with Hanna (Ashley Benson) on the Feb. 14 episode of Pretty Little Liars, forgiving her for nearly exposing her affair. And their re-friendship couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time, as the mystery behind Alison’s murder is only getting more intense! This week’s clue came in the form of a Braille message, spelling out the numbers 2-1-4. We later learn it’s the number of a specific room at a shady motel in Rosewood, but the question is… what happened there?
Unfortunately, not every feud was squashed this week. The rivalry between Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) intensified when Paige’s dad accused the school of giving Emily preferential treatment on the swim team because she’s a lesbian. Emily hid the ordeal from her mom, fearful of another anti-lesbian lecture, but her mom ended up surprising everyone by confronting Paige’s dad and telling him to back down. I have to say, I kind of love her mom now. She gave a really touching speech about loving Emily no matter what, and it really gave me hope for their relationship.
But the bigger shock came at the tail end of the episode, when Paige approached Emily in the parking lot and KISSED her! (OK, it wasn’t a HUGE shock, since I think most of us saw it coming — but it was still a totally intense scene.) Could there be a budding romance between Emily and Paige? And what will happen when Maya (Bianca Lawson) returns to town and learns of her girlfriend’s naughty behavior? Whatever happens, I can’t wait to see it!
Speaking of Rosewood’s shadier residents, Toby (Keegan Allen) seems to have completely gotten over Emily — and moved onto Spencer (Troian Bellisario!) Between the tutoring, hand-holding and late night drives through town, it really seems like these two are forming a solid relationship… and I couldn’t be happier. They both have incredibly intense personalities, hidden behind bookish exteriors, and they’re starting to relate to each other on a level I never could have predicted. But not everyone is pleased with this new connection: Toby’s maybe-not-blind step-sister Jenna (Tammin Sursok) still has the hots for him, and she doesn’t appreciate Spencer getting in the way. Like Toby told her this week, Spencer and her friends make Jenna nervous.
And just when Hanna’s mom (Laura Leighton) thought she was out of the woods, a surprise relative of Mrs. Potter came out of the woodworks to collect the money from her safety deposit box. For whatever reason, Ashley wasn’t able to see through his obvious crooked smile — but her new houseguest, Caleb (Tyler J. Blackburn), was! He looked into Leland, and learned he wasn’t quite who he said he was. In fact, he’s using the identify of a dead guy! Speaking of Caleb, I SO approve of his and Hanna’s impending relationship. As much as I love Chuck Hittinger, Sean was pretty boring. Like, dry-toast boring. Hanna may have LOOK like a good girl, but she’s got a fun dark side — and Caleb’s just the guy to bring that out.
But the episode’s most ridiculous story line was the faux-love triangle between Aria, Ezra (Ian Harding) and Ella (Holly Marie Combs.) It happened just as I said it would: Byron (Chad Lowe) got his signals crossed and began to fear his wife was taking a shine to his daughter’s english teacher. This led to a super-awkward parent-teacher conference, full of Ezra’s trademark crazy eyes (which I always love.)
