From the beach to the street, long flowing skirts are easy and airy, especially for summer! Check out the look on the runway and on your favorite a-listers & SHOP if you want to get the look too!
Everyone from Selena Gomez, Eva Longoria, Rachel Bilson and more have showed up in long flowing skirts — and considering they’re so laid back we don’t blame them! While it may seem like a tricky item to wear, with the right get-up any body type can benefit from this style. I recommend tucking in a more fitted top to balance out the voluminous look. See where else we’ve spotted them, SHOP, and read my tips if you want to work the trend. -KM
This top has a nice neckline if you want to balance out a maxi skirt — tuck it into a flowing skirt and you’re ready to go!
Ann Taylor Halter Top, $68
This skirt is a nice, dressy take on the trend — perfect for a summer cocktail party if you want to splurge.
alice + olivia shannon printed long skirt, $484
Here’s another great option — this one is a bit more casual, so it’s perfect for during the day or a trip to the beach — but if you swap your sandals and add some jewelry you can easily take the look from day to night!
AE OPEN-STITCH RACERBACK TANK, $9.99
This fun print may look casual, but with a belt and the right accessories it’s also great for a hot summer night.
Forever 21 Ikat Maxi Skirt, $19.80
The solid color gives you so much to experiment with — and it’s so easy to throw on!
EXPRESS Maxi Skirt, $59.90
Selena Gomez wore a flowing black Alternative Apparel maxi skirt in London on July 5. Since Selena is very petite, a shorter top works well.
You may steer clear of maxi skirts because of your height — but you definitely don’t have to! Rachel Bilson is short but she still makes the look work — stick to solid colors and opt for a skirt with a slit so you can show some leg. The slit will also make the skirt more airy, which is perfect for summer!

I wouldn’t recommend a flowing top and skirt combo unless you’re tall and lean like Minka Kelly — although it definitely looks great on her! Follow her lead and accessorize with a belt, but I would tuck in a more fitted top. I also like how she balanced out the look with a different neckline and exposed shoulders — that’s the best way to work a maxi skirt!
Gwen Stefani shows off just how practical a maxi skirt can be — and I like how she paired the get-up with a shorter denim jacket. If you want to wear a patterned skirt, I would keep the top very simple.
If you want to work a top with longer sleeves, add some flair to the look by incorporating a slit or showing off your tummy! Eva Longoria is another short star who totally owned this look, thanks to the way she styled the skirt. Crop tops are all the rage this summer, and they look great when paired with a flowing skirt.
