From The Runway To Real Life: How To Wear A Jumpsuit This Spring!

Posted Fri, April 15, 2011 4:29pm EDT

This trend can be tricky to wear, but everyone from Kim Kardashian to Heidi Klum have tried it out! Read my tips & check out my picks if you want to find the perfect one piece for your body type!

If you cringe at the thought of wearing a romper or jumpsuit, you must be frustrated at the fact that the trend just won’t die. Not only did we see the return of the one piece on practically every runway (including Elie Saab and Marc by Marc Jacobs), but stars in all shapes and sizes are also wearing the trend, both on the red carpet and off. Rather than completely avoid the get-up, it’s time to embrace the idea of wearing a jumpsuit — with my tips and picks you’ll be able to pull off the look!

It’s no secret the ’70s are back in a big way — and the jumpsuit is the quintessential way to work the trend! If you’re long and lean like Katrina Bowden and Gwen Stefani, you can get away with wearing the look in practically any color, pattern, shape, and size. I recommend opting for something with volume on the top if you want to enhance your chest. One shoulder, asymmetrical one pieces are also great for thinner gals.

If you’re more petite like Kourtney Kardashian, opt for something with a higher waistline to enhance your legs. I think a more structured, form-fitting top is also flattering and creates a nice contrast — this rule is also something curvier girls, like Kourt’s sis, Kim, should keep in mind. Kim totally knows how to flatter her curves in a one piece, and I give her credit for finding the perfect silhouette for her shape.

While plunging necklines are sexy, avoid something severe like Heidi Klum and Kourtney — you don’t want to fall out all over the place! Khloe Kardashian definitely wins for wearing a sexy jumpsuit the right way. Even though her neckline is plunging, since her arms are covered up she isn’t showing too much skin on top. Khloe isn’t a petite girl, yet she manages to look super svelte in her one piece. This silhouette is ideal for a variety of girls in all shapes and sizes.

If you’re still weary about wearing a one-piece, opt for something in a solid color, like Khloe. A simple pant leg and form-fitting top is ideal if it’s your first time suiting up — it’s just like wearing a maxi dress for the first time! Even if you think basic black is kind of boring, with a nice belt and the right jewelry it can look so dressy and so chic.

I would also pay attention to the draping and neckline — there are so many factors that make the jumpsuit so much more flattering than you might think! For my final tip, pair the get-up with a pair of heels if you’re nervous about wearing this look for the first time — a nice pump will elongate your figure.

If you can’t wait to work this trend, have fun with it! There are so many ways to wear this look dressed up or dressed down. I really like the florals and patterns — with a pair of wedges it’s ideal for both during the day and if you’re going out at night.

I have to admit, considering I don’t have much height to work with, the jumpsuit isn’t exactly my favorite look for spring — but with the right silhouette it’s definitely a look I plan to work this season! Check out my picks below if you want to try out the trend too.
