UPDATE: Since this post was published in Dec. 2009, Tiger and Elin finalized their divorce. The announcement was made Aug. 23, 2010.
Aug. 23, 2010: Not only is she smart and beautiful, now she’s rich too! After almost six years of marriage, Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren‘s divorce was finalized Aug. 23. The couple released a statement saying, “We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future. While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us.” The divorce document described the marriage as, “irretrievably broken.”
The former pair went on to say, “Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern.”
Original report, Dec. 22, 2010: For Elin Nordegren, there is “almost an impossible chance that she will stay with Tiger [Woods],” says an Us Weekly source. “She would not be humiliated like that, and it would send a wrong message to her children.” This despite the fact that, according to the same story, Tiger is “devastated”: “He’s a family guy at heart and probably wants to do everything he can to be back together with Elin. But it certainly doesn’t look like it’s going that way,” says a “longtime Tiger pal.”
And her lawyers, say sources, are trying to decide whether to file for divorce in Florida or California — Elin has already reportedly consulted Sorrell Trope, the power divorce attorney who has repped Britney Spears, Nicole Kidman, and Nicolas Cage in their divorces.
Meanwhile, Tiger is also totally ready to make this as quick and painless as possible — for his own selfish purposes. “He doesn’t want any court issues. So once spring golf rolls around, it will all be behind him,” says an Us source “close to the deeply private Tiger.” He’s also being “advised to return to golf sooner rather than later,” according to a source, and “he’s going to lie low and go back for the spring.”
If Elin made quick work of her divorce, hers would be the latest in a string of swift splits:
- LeAnn Rimes and Dean Sheremet got their divorce over and finalized on the same day — and just three months after their separation.
- Jon Gosselin and Kate Gosselin finalized the terms of their split last Friday, Dec. 18. They filed back in June — and decided against prolonging the process with a long court proceeding.
