Woman Gives Birth To Twins: One White And One Black. Genetics Are So Weird!

Posted Fri, February 25, 2011 4:04pm EDT

No trouble telling these two apart! Boy Ghabriael takes after his mom Khristi, who’s white, and girl Triniti looks like her dad Charles, who’s black. Amazing!

17-month-old twins Ghabriael and Triniti may be brother and sister, but they look nothing alike! That’s because, with odds a million to one, light-skinned and blue-eyed Ghabriael looks like mommy, while dark-skinned and brown-eyed Triniti takes after daddy. Incredible, right?

“People ask, “How did it happen? Are you sure they are twins?” We get a lot of stares, and I am sure people make comments behind my back,” 29 year-old Khristi Cunningham tells ABC News about her babies. “I don’t know how it happened. They are fraternal twins, so they aren’t any closer than if they had been born years apart. Ours just happen to have the same birthday.”

This happens because skin and eye color are determined by several different genes, rather than a single one, but still, seeing twins — identical or fraternal — that looks so different is very rare.

Khristi wrote an article on the blog mixedandhappy.com, which caters to mixed race families. She says some commenters are wonderful, while others are very judgemental calling her children “weird” and saying they will be “ridiculed their whole lives.”

“No one gets to say if they are black or white,” Khristi says. “It’s not a choice and to me they are perfect and will grow up to be loved. There’s too much hate. People should be more worried about whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat.”

What do you think of this amazing genetic phenomenon?

Those two are gorgeous! Both are absolutely beautiful and I have no idea how anyone can comment negatively about a a baby anyway. All babies are cute!

um it’s not strange at all have sex with two different colored men around your monthly obvulation twins don’t have to be born on the same day to be considered twins. fraternals come from two different eggs there for it’s easier to have black and white fraternal twins than it is black & white identical twins because identicals happen when a single egg splits into two embryos

I think this family is so very blessed to have 2 healthy, happy babies who are clearly loved by their parents. Shame on anyone who would make nasty, snide comments about the way the children look or the color of their skin. I think they’re precious!
