There’s no denying that Zika Virus is scary. After all, the illness, which is spread by daytime-active mosquitos, has no vaccine and no specific treatment. Even worse, Zika can also spread from a pregnant woman to her fetus, which can result in microcephaly — severe brain malformations — and other birth defects.
BUT, the good news is that Zika can be prevented. Aside from wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, there are certain ingredients found in insect repellents that are extremely effective at fighting off mosquitos that may carry Zika.
When picking your bug sprays, make sure to use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents with one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol.
